First built in the 1200s from wood, the Devorgilla Bridge in Dumfries was later constructed of red sandstone to make the bridge more permanent and durable in the natural elements. The bridge crosses the River Nith and makes up part of the historic skyline of Dumfries as viewed across the river from the west side. Visible past the end of the bridge on the east side were the teal-colored tops of the courthouse.
There is an area to park on the west side of the bridge that is shared with the Old Bridge House, both of which were stops on a walking tour of Dumfries I went on in July 2019. I found crossing the bridge on foot enjoyable and the ground was paved. read more
