Bruce's Stone
The stone at the entrance to Glen Trool, three miles north of Newton Stewart, is a massive granite reminder of Robert the Bruce's first victory over the English in
March 1307 in the run-up to Bannockburn. To get to the visitor centre from Newton Stewart take the A714 signposted to Girvan for eight miles. Take a right turn at Bargrennan signposted Galloway Forest Park the take next right turn just past Glentrool village signpost to Glentrool Visitor Centre. The visitor centre is a couple of miles from the stone itself however it is well worth a stop to refuel I even found some nice and reasonably priced gifts.
There is a small carpark nearer to the stone although there are a number of lovely walks and even mountain biking trails in the surrounding forest. The stone itself and the view that you get from it is so impressive. There is a plaque which gives you more information and what to look for in the scenery.
It almost goes without saying, but it is better to go on a fair day. read more
