My family just moved to the area near the Loyola campus and so far I like the area, although it can get very busy here, especially in the afternoon! Anyway, one day on the way to Lincolnwood mall in Skokie on the bus, my eye caught a glimpse of a small steeple building on Devon Ave. with a small cross on it. It looked like a very nice, clean brown brick building. But I continued my trip to the mall and didn't think too much about it.
I was raised baptist, but my family stopped going to church months ago because the services were LONG and my children after a while just could not sit through a service long enough before making a fuss. The church did not have a children's program so they had to sit through the services.
A few weeks passed and I went to the mall again. but this time I was also looking for the steeple building I saw a few weeks ago. It was quite a few blocks we must have passed, when I finally saw it again. The traffic must have been slow because the bus was traveling slower than usual. I was able to make out the name on the building this time, "Devon Church". Then on a white window sign I saw that service begins at 9:30
and it was a "multi-cultural interdonominational congregation". Hmmm. I never heard of a multi-cultural congregation before in a church setting and it sounded interesting.
OK, so one Sunday at around 8:45, I took the bus to the main street you have to pass before you see the building. Then I walked the rest of the way to the building. Actually this building looks much bigger in person. I read the window sign more thoroughly and again, what I read looked interesting.
I peeked through one of the door's windows and saw lights on inside. I walked in and went through three sets of doors, which almost looked similiar to each other. This place has a lot of entrance doors! I sat in one of chairs in the back and listened to two people in the front singing and playing music. While I was sitting, two more people came in and one of them turned and greeted me. This person was very excited to see me visit and I really felt welcomed! Some more people started entering and they too greeted me. This place has some very nice people.
I sat through one of their services. There were some hymns, songs, music, prayers and the sermon (which I thought was thought-provoking) and the service ran only an HOUR long!!!! They even have a children's program which runs simultatiously in a different part of the building.
I mentioned this place to my husband and told him how inviting and warm it was. He now has been attending (when he is not working that day) and our children too.
Give this church a visit. I feel it is very inviting and interesting. Who can say that about church? read more
