St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral sits at the west end of Palmerston Place, a wide attractive Edinburgh New Town thoroughfare named after Viscount Palmerston, a former prime minister, and University of Edinburgh graduate who died in 1865. Building has three tall spires which reach up over the city skyline, meaning that the cathedral can be seen from a variety of viewpoints and outlooks in the city. But the building itself is often overlooked by visitors, perhaps because it's a little further from the traditional tourism area of the Old Town. The central spire of Scott's church is 90m tall, making it the tallest structure in Edinburgh city centre, and the two shorter spires added to the western end of the building later became known locally as Barbara and Mary, after the Walker sisters themselves.

It's beautiful goth struck may spook you from the outside, but as soon as you walk in you are welcomed by all the colorful stain glass windows. Each window depicts an event from the Bible, all through the church. As you walk around, you notice all the carvings and little details that make this Church so warm and welcoming. Not to mention the innate history it carries within itself.

While walking along the aisles and pews and enjoying the stained glass windows, exceptional masonry, gothic architecture and the magnificent vaulted Scottish blue ceiling, the most haunting melodies floated towards us from the far end of the cathedral. It was a choir of young ladies, singing the most beautiful songs. We stayed rooted to where we were, then started making our way towards them. The singing went on for several minutes, and we quietly listened, adding another special memory to our family's trip to Scotland.

The Gillis Centre in Marchmont is a combination of things; a church, a Catholic retreat centre and…read morea bed and breakfast. I've only really encountered it in the latter capacity, as when I lived down the road it become the accommodation of choice for visiting parents, mainly due to its convenient location. It's also a very peaceful place, with tranquil grounds set just off the main road, and, I suppose, a generally spiritual atmosphere. You certainly don't have to be Catholic to stay here, as long as you don't object to being surrounded by Catholic iconography; the corridor, as you go to breakfast, for example, has a very informative display of popes along the walls, while various saintly figures beam down at you wherever you are. The rooms are simple and comfortable, the prices reasonable and the staff very hospitable. So unless you're fervently anti-religious, the Gillis is a restful place to stay, and not far from the city centre.

I've known about this place for ages. Mainly because it's attached to a really well known and tasty…read morepub (Cloisters). But I only went this weekend for the first time for an exciting occasion: my first wedding ever! The whole experience was pretty interesting since I'd never been to one and it was also the first time I've been in an English-speaking church. As it is with most churches, there were loads of paintings and murals, as well as sculptures of the Virgin Mary and crosses hanging around the place (in my opinion, quite precariously, but that must not be true as I don't think I've ever heard of them falling and maiming anyone). By the end of the ceremony, so much incense had been swung about that the skylight (or whatever that round bit of window at the top of a church is called) let in rays that swam through the smoke. It's really quite beautiful and worth popping into if you get a chance.
