My 7 year old son attended the Roaring Rockets and Astronaut Detectives camp at St. Michael in Studio City and we were very disappointed with our experience. The camp is supposed to start at 9am, however, because other families arrive late, the children who arrive on time are provided with no activity other than coloring for the first half hour or so. No space materials offered, no counselor interaction. We asked if there was anything else for the kids to do, but this was the only activity offered. As a result, my son wanted to arrive late in the morning, which was not an option for us since we work. What a huge missed opportunity for a camp that is supposed to focus on space and rockets. Our daughter's pre-school has more space related activities and materials available to the children in the class room than this so-called science camp. The kids did not start building their rocket until day 2 of camp, and my son reported that there was very little activity day 1. They finished building their rockets on Thursday, and Friday was "launch" day. My son was excited to launch his rocket and then bring it home to show his family. After all, the description of the camp states "Continue your space adventure by taking home your launch system and setting up mission control in your own back yard." However, when we arrived to pick him up on Friday, he and several other children came out with NO rocket. Several of the children were crying because they didn't have a rocket. When we inquired where the rocket was, counselor Ashley informed us that our son's rocket, along with several other children's rockets, was on the roof and if the rocket went on the roof the children do not get to bring one home. We asked for another rocket since this was part of what we paid for; Ashley was very unfriendly and seemed annoyed with our request but ultimately looked for and found another rocket that we could bring home. Other children were not so lucky and did not get to bring home a rocket. Perhaps the counselors should have the children launch the rockets in an open area, away from a roof! This is what they worked for all week, and if you are launching near a roof, it is completely foreseeable that the rockets may land on the roof. At the very least, have enough extra rockets on hand so that you can send each child home with one. All in all this was a disappointing experience. My son loves science and enjoyed some aspects of the camp but we will not be back and will not recommend it to others. read more
