Abysmal builder. Two Alair homes going up simultaneously in our subdivision outside Berthoud, Co…read more The Alair homes have been under construction longer than any others in the subdivision and have been eyesores. They frequently take weeks long breaks in construction during "fragile" stages. The house wrap on both houses as well as roof water shield we're shredded by wind as the builder disappeared for weeks. They not only trash out the lots under construction but also have contributed massively to debris in the surrounding neighborhood. I'm surprised they leave their builder sign up - their lack of professionalism should embarrass them. I guess when the building trade is busy, they figure they can slack off without repercussion.

Pat and Dawn from Alair met with us in the Fall of 2017 to start the planning process and spent a lot of time working with us to understand our goals for this build, and to manage our expectations throughout the process. As we moved forward, they brought in an architect and engineering team that they felt would align well with our goals. We finished the design relatively quickly through the winter with plans to break ground in the spring of 2018. Over the winter Pat and Dawn did a ton of work getting multiple quotes for every step of the build, and walked through every one with us to recommend their preferred contractors and what the pros/cons were to every single quote on every piece of the build. Throughout the whole process their communication was fantastic and extremely well organized.. When we did break ground, it seemed like something big and new was happening every day during the build. The Alair team built the schedule from beginning to end, and managed to stay extremely close to that schedule throughout the entire build. Pat and Dawn were both always quick to update us on what was happening and ensure that our feedback was taken into account quickly if anything wasn't quite right. Most impressively, the subcontractors they brought in all had nothing but great things to say about working with Alair and how organized and thorough their plans were. Were there hiccups along the way? Sure, we had a few minor delays, a few mistakes translating the plan to the build, but everything was solved quickly by Pat and Dawn and the end result was absolutely fantastic. The Alair team was always up front communicating everything that was going on and came up with a solid action plan for solving every hiccup. I would without hesitation work with them again on another home build or any project.

I heard something scratching around in our chimney first thing in the morning. As an avid animal…read morelover, it immediately began to stress me out. I quickly began contacting our property manager (who continually proves to be worthless), animal control, as well as wild animal rehab centers to see if there was anything that could be done. Animal control came (super friendly and helpful), but explained that because our chimney was so weird, the only way to get the little guy out would be to drop a rope through the opening of the chimney at the top and hope it climbs out. It had been a really awful week, and this was just the cherry on top. Hoping to find another answer, I posted to NextDoor asking for help. Paul immediately replied, asked a couple questions about the chimney, then said, "I can be there in about an hour". We spoke on the phone and he made sure I was comfortable with him getting up on the roof before heading over. Sure enough, Paul showed up with his ladders and rope within the hour. I work from home, so I was unable to join him on the roof, but he took charge and immediately took action. He actually had to take a second ladder onto the roof to get to the chimney. I believe he even had to use some tools to get the chimney cap off before running the rope through. While he was up there, he found a squirrels nest outside the flue pipe. Ah ha!! Must be the culprit. Once the rope had reached down to the fireplace, he had me light some incense to help smoke the critter out. We waited for a bit and didn't hear any noise. He offered to leave the rope overnight and come back the next day to retrieve it, but at this point we figured that the squirrel may have been making noise up at the top of the chimney and was not actually stuck in the chimney somewhere. I felt a little foolish, but at ease knowing that there wasn't a little animal trapped somewhere. While on the roof, Paul also made us aware of the hail damage. We are just renters, so we hope our property managers are on top of that, but it was nice to know that he was also looking out for other areas that needed repair. He also explained what needed to be done to keep the squirrels from making nests in that spot. Paul is a kind and caring neighbor who went out of his way to help me with something I knew nothing about. The amount of stress I had been experiencing in the past week had really been wearing on me. Paul took that stress and turned it into relief. I can't thank him enough for his help. I highly recommend using Paul for any renovation or restoration needs. His patience, ingenuity, and kindness make him an A++ in my book. Thank you so much, Paul!!

Need a quick update. People ... Read my review and do your homework. If you come across Jeff and…read moreLaura English under ANY business name you had better do your homework. It is a matter of public record as to the background of these people. Be smart. They are now running under a new business name. The review posted by John S. about this company mirrors the horrible experience that we had with Jeff/Laura English/Otter B. I won't go into quite the detail but you will get the gist. We are very dissatisfied with our experience with Otter B Enterprises operated by Jeffrey and Laura English. Check with your building department and do your homework. After our kitchen renovation project, we discovered that Jeff English/Otter B. Enterprises was not licensed to do the work and did the work without permits and inspections. Likewise his subcontracted electrician did not get the required State electrical permit and inspections. Otter B has apparently now obtained a license in Larimer County but that doesn't discount the fact in any manner that they worked on our home without it We now have the extra expense of trying to correct the situation with the state and county. Jeffrey English provided us a printed brochure advertising his membership in the Tom Martino network and various professional associations which turned out to be untrue. He changed significant aspects of our contracted design (reduced the size of the island by 6" on the length AND 6" on the width, and deleted the crown molding) without ever consulting with us. There are also many examples of poor workmanship and issues with the wood flooring installation. We would NEVER recommend Otter B Enterprises /Jeffrey and Laura English to anyone. I would also like to point out that I posted my review on another other website and it has come to my attention that Otter B is attempting to either have my review removed or to dispute it. The above review speaks for itself.

We are completely unsatisfied with Jeff English/Otter B Enterprises and would discourage anyone…read morefrom hiring him. He was deceptive and difficult to work with. When my wife and I met with Jeff English from Otter B, we were very clear that we are very particular and that we wanted a contractor that would pay close attention to details making sure that all the work would be done precisely and cleanly. He validated our concerns about other contractors doing work poorly and assured us that he would be able to meet and exceed our standard. He claimed that his work wouldn't look like a remodel or "after thought." He encouraged us to speak with him about any concerns as he was completing his work and that if we did not like his work that he would fix it. He asked us to trust him with our new home. He told us that his bid included all costs and nothing would be added on or hidden. We gave him almost $70,000 to remodel parts of our bathroom, closet, kitchen, bar, and fireplace (this was not a full remodel). He was unable to complete any of these projects, the work that he did complete was poorly done, and he charged us a significant amount above the bid he gave us in the contract. We hired him in May. He claimed he would be able to complete the project by the end of June so that we could move in at the beginning of July. The work was not complete when we moved in mid July. We fired him at the end of August because the work was not done as he promised, and the work that had been done was done poorly and needed an expert to repair. Some of the mistakes can only be fixed by completely ripping out his work which would cost thousands more. This has consumed so much of our time because Jeff made so many mistakes and misrepresented himself and his capacity to perform the work we hired him for. He was unwilling to follow our design and continually made choices without our approval. He was unable to receive constructive feedback around his mistakes and unable or unwilling to accept personal responsibility for his mistakes and misrepresentations. Jeff took so much from us and the money is only a part of that. Our time, our emotional energy and the excitement that we had for these projects is so valuable, and he stole these from us. We would not ever recommend Jeff English or Otter B Enterprises. Poor craftsmanship: In order to insure the highest quality craftsmanship, Jeff says he does all his own work. However, instead of subcontracting specialists to do this custom work, he has his 18 year old son and his wife assist him in completing his work. Poor measurements: Many problems occurred due to inaccurate measurements, which resulted in multiple areas of damage and prevented projects from being completed as we had originally designed them. Changed plans without consulting us: We were clear in the beginning and made ourselves clear many times throughout the remodel that we wanted to be involved in all changes to our plans, and he was unable to follow our direction. Sloppy Work: Despite his claim that his work is clean and that he has great attention to detail, he did not take precautions to protect finished areas from the remodel and left excessive materials and markings on finished areas. We have spent several hours cleaning up and have still not been able to completely fix the damage. Some examples: · Drawers (some of them) don't open and close without catching · Stove is not centered · Fireplace stonework was left with gaps between stones on the face, areas without grout on edges, and 90 degree cuts left visible instead of having a finished edge · Bar refrigerator did not fit (requiring us to either completely redo all of the work he did in the bar or replace the existing refrigerator with a smaller one); wall was damaged when refrigerator was removed for repair and requires repair · Cabinets did not fit into place, so he changed the plan (initially and cabinets were not symmetrical), when we discussed this with him he balanced out the cabinet sizes but cut into the soffit (at this point the soffit has been 'repaired' but poorly and will require more attention · Tile work was not installed well so it is crooked in shower, bar, and fireplace · Excess texture on walls, trim, flooring, and even on the in-wall speakers · Excess grout on tile · Excess caulk smeared on the floor and walls · Pencil marks on tile · Caulk that is peeling away (after only a few weeks) · Veneer doesn't reach the edges of cabinets · Charged us for work, which he led us to believe was included Damage to Our Home: · Drywall around the fireplace · Scratches in the travertine floor and counter · Rust stains on the travertine floor in the bathroom and on tile · Multiple chips in granite hearth from a hammer · Door to the bedroom during demolition
