We are also willing to open up our own house for your perusal, since it underwent a major remodel completed in 2009, which George designed and oversaw. George has his BA in architecture from CSU San Luis Obispo, consistently one of the top 3 architecture schools in the nation. He is also LEED AP certified, if green design and construction is what you are interested in. As for the single negative 1-star review, this seems to be a malicious plant from a builder whose unprofessionalism forced George to terminate his professional relationship with him. You should ask why the same reviewer gave 5 stars to Alpha Omega Construction, a company with many questionable and shoddy business practices, including a license on file with the California State Contractors License Board that states there are no employees, which means they are not paying workers' comp for the workers they certainly employ.

It included structural work, removing load-bearing walls, full kitchen renovation, and a bathroom addition. It was our first home, a fixer-upper, and we had no idea what we were doing. Hiring Andre was hands-down the best decision we made. He started by listening -- how we live, how our family functions, what we needed the space to do for us. He was patient with our budget and never made us feel like our questions were dumb. We'd give feedback, he'd come back with something better. When we had no ideas at all, he'd come up with ones we never would have thought of. We ended up with a plan we were ecstatic about! The attention to detail, turnaround time, and reliability were all excellent. He helped us run contractor bidding, then showed up at the site throughout construction to make sure things were built to plan and catch issues before they became expensive changes (his communication with our contractor and engineer was excellent). Andre came up through construction before becoming an architect, and he's practiced in San Francisco long enough to know permitting cold. Both saved us real time and headaches. There's nobody else we'd call for future projects.

Every aspect of my experience at that time was positive. Andre worked to skillfully retain the exterior flavor of the 1924 Marina-style 2/1, as we developed a taller 4/2.5, with a comfortable and functional interior. Long before any of these other reviews were written, Andre was exercising the excellent listening skills, inventive design, and superior aesthetic sense you'll read about from others. His ability to work with permitting and review processes instilled confidence as did his good relationships and communication with contractors and subs. He was tactful but clear in gently guiding me away from bad ideas I came up with myself or with friends. Invaluable. Long story short, Andre spearheaded efforts that resulted in a substantial increase in home value, enabling me to relocate comfortably in preparation for retirement. I am working with Andre again, this time for more modest projects to remodel the kitchen, add a deck, and expand the downstairs suite. Delighted he's still available, nothing has changed except his expanded experience and a great new location in Dogpatch! Andre is still easy to work with, professional as can be, super-responsive, and gives amazing value. Very happy to be working with him again.

I had an awkwardly shaped addition that I had been struggling to figure out, and Mark came up with several creative layout options that I never would have considered on my own. He walked me through each one, clearly explaining his thinking along with the pros and cons, which made the process feel collaborative and low stress. We ended up transforming the space into both an additional bathroom and a highly functional utility room. I was especially impressed by how he turned such a challenging footprint into something so practical and beautiful. He also handled the San Francisco permitting process, which was a huge relief and allowed our contractors to get started right away. The finished rooms look amazing, and the entire process felt smooth and well managed. I would absolutely work with Mark again and highly recommend him to anyone looking for a thoughtful, solutions-oriented architect.

We contemplated redesign of the lower floor, an update of the façade, and the entire re-envisioning of the terraced backyard, it's connection to the house, and flow between the living spaces inside and out. Mark and his team were a joy to work with. His knowledge of and experience with San Francisco's Building and Planning codes and the department made him a perfect partner for our project. He provided us with several novel solutions, and he walked us through each one -- carefully validating his designs with our desires and our budget. For the lower floor, he 'found' space we didn't think we had. For the façade, he created a look that was fresh yet integrated beautifully with the neighborhood. The topography of the backyard was particularly challenging. It was a hassle to move from the main floor to the backyard, frustrating our joy of outdoor living. Mark's solution resolved conflicting elevations between the building and the backyard elegantly, making egress to the backyard a pleasure. For this, he was instrumental in selecting and working with a structural engineer to figure out challenges of incorporating some very high retaining walls. We loved his solution. We would hire Mark again in a flash. He is a pleasure to know and a pleasure to work with.

We're thrilled to write this glowing review for the incredible team of architects at Klopf…read moreArchitecture, who transformed our mid-century modern home into a work of art. From the very beginning, working with John Klopf, Angela Todorova, and the team at Klopf Architecture was an absolute pleasure, and the results have exceeded our wildest expectations. Klopf Architecture is a true visionary, and their deep appreciation for mid-century modern design is evident in every aspect of their work. They masterfully blended the classic elements of the era with a fresh, contemporary twist, creating a living space that's both timeless and uniquely tailored to my family's needs. What struck us most about Klopf Architecture and John's team was their ability to listen and understand our vision for the project. They took the time to get to know our tastes and preferences, and then skillfully translated those ideas into a design that was nothing short of breathtaking. Their attention to detail and commitment to preserving the integrity of the original mid-century modern architecture while introducing innovative and sustainable elements truly sets them apart. Throughout the entire project, communication was seamless and transparent. John, Angela, and the team at Klopf Architecture were always available to address any questions or concerns, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. Their professionalism and dedication to staying within the project's budget were truly commendable. I'd also like to mention that our builder, Augie, from Coast to Coast Development, was equally skilled and also a critical element to realizing the vision that John, Angela and the team at Klopf Architecture had dreamt up. The combination of Klopf Architecture and Coast to Coast Development was without a doubt, the best of the best, and we feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with each of them. The end result is a mid-century modern home that not only pays homage to the past but also celebrates the future of design and sustainability. We can't recommend Klopf Architecture highly enough. If you are looking for an architect who is not only passionate about their craft, but also genuinely invested in bringing your dream home to life, look no further. With Klopf, you won't only find a skilled professional but a true partner in your journey to creating the home of your dreams. Thank you, John, for your outstanding work, trustworthiness, and unwavering dedication to making our mid-century modern home a masterpiece. You have truly exceeded all our expectations, and we're grateful for the beauty and functionality you've brought into our lives

We'd ask him about potential properties and opinions on eichler renovations, and he was always responsive and helpful. We recently spoke with John about our newest project, and he remembers all the details of our needs and preferences, which speaks to the level of customer service! I really appreciate his ability to immediately envision the possibilities the moment he steps into a space. He cares about the details, both obvious and subtle, that make a home feel right. Unfortunately our project does not fit the kind of homes he specializes in (which we had a hunch about), but he spent a lot of time going through all the considerations with us anyway. If we ever build a modern home, John will be at the top of our list.

Communication: Andy is organized, efficient, and clear in his communications with us. He was also upfront with us from the beginning about the potential challenges our project would face, from city building regulations to neighbor considerations, but always presented solutions to the issues. His in-depth knowledge of the city codes has also been reassuring - we really appreciate his focus on the goal of making this a smooth, low drama process. Our 2nd project with Andy included the main level Kitchen, Family area, Mudroom and Powder Room. We were so impressed with Andy's design talent the first time, that we were certain we wanted to work with Andy to tackle the design challenges for the second go round. Andy again was integral to the success of the project. After receiving an initial estimate from a contractor we had worked with in the past that was higher than expected, Andy was able to offer another contractor more in line with our budget. After listening to our thoughts and concerns, Andy offered several design options, and again we were really excited with the finalized approach. Andy was able to incorporate some specific design details we wanted, and then build upon them and make them a unique feature for our project. When we were facing technical challenges with the millwork detail we incorporated into the project, Andy suggested a solution that the millworker went with to solve the problem. Andy again was great to work with through the design, both listening and offering design options we hadn't thought of. His attention to design detail really made the project. His knowledge of construction and cost were such a great asset to making our project a success. He followed through with the project from beginning to end. We Hired Andy 2x as our Architect, we highly recommend him for your project!
