He told us all about his family business and his moms recipe and the features they had on television. We also saw their kitchen where they make the whiskey cake! If you are here, definitely pay a visit and experience their southern hospitality. We bought a bunch of stuff and really enjoyed them. I brought some at work as well that my coworkers enjoyed! Serenely located next to his walking horse stables and beside his home, his shop is a quaint, small business that reminds us what it means to be made in America! Although his bread is sold in Cracker Barrel stores, Kroger's, and he has been featured on The View and Food Network, he keeps his operation small enough to be able to let visitors tour his kitchen (for free) while listening to his unique story of American small twin success. Be sure to stop by and buy some whiskey bread, chocolate whiskey balls, or whiskey pecans before venturing on to the Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg. Calling ahead would be best- give this trip about 30 minutes of your time! Bring $23 and you can take home one of each of his products. Or order from his website!

I keep a running collection of places to try in Chattanooga on my usually-annual trips to the area…read more I added Alessandro's maybe a year or two ago, assuming I could stop along the way in the future. Instead, I came up with my parents to visit the cast iron museum and realized that this place was right around the corner - so I had to visit! This little shop is tucked in the downtown area of South Pittsburg. Much of the inventory is on display as you enter. It's impressive the variety of product the owner has managed to offer in a relatively limited space. This is a legit Italian bakery. The owner was in the shop and made small talk with us about where he learned to bake, how important his family recipes were to him, and about all the care and consideration that goes into each product. He also very generously shared a sample of both a fig spread and a sort of savory feta dip. The feta dip was good but the fig spread was great -- subtly sweet with a very satisfying dense and sticky texture. My parents and I both ordered an Italian cream cake from the cold case. We worried about it on the drive home given the temperature, but the owner said it would be fine and even recommended we take our slices out of the fridge to warm up for 15-20 minutes before eating it. Both recommendations were totally true; our cakes kept well for a few days and were definitely improved by warming slightly (so the icing would be a bit more malleable and smooth). The cakes were absolutely delicious -- not too sweet, a fantastic crumb, and full of nice almond flavor. I also got some chocolate chip biscotti and an Italian thumbprint biscotti with some fig spread on top. The chocolate chip biscotti was my least favorite item, though it was still tasty - it hedged a little on the too-dry side for me, even as far as biscotti goes. Still, I wouldn't object if someone offered me one to eat for free, lol. The almond thumbprint biscotti was completely delightful from start to finish. The chopped nuts inside the cookie added a great crunch, and the delightful fig spread on top added needed moisture and softness and an explosion of fruity flavor. Would highly recommend stopping by to try this bakery if you're ever in the area - heck, it's worth a special trip, if you love pastries like I do :)

I was curious to see what they had compared to Linit's goodlicious fresh donuts, kolaches, and other morning goodies... as he had a solid FIVE STARS from me and I'm sure pretty much everyone else who had crossed his threshold! It was sad to have him move out of state and lose all those goodies... but... Anyway, walking in I was greeted by two smiling faces and one sleepy one... the young daughter of the owner. She's not quite two, but is adorable! I asked if I could take pictures and got the okay... they're not quite finished with everything, but have opened and are working around getting everything else put in place. I have to say WOW on what's in their bakery cases... it's edible ART. BEAUTIFUL. Abel, the owner, came from LA to the little town of Shelbyville to escape the madness that is California; he lived there 15 years. He and his wife are so sweet... I feel like family! They are so welcoming... This is a more Hispanic type bakery than an "American" type... and the bakery cases are filled with breads almost too pretty to eat... cheesecakes, tarts, flan, many gorgeous sweets I have no idea what they are but I want... mega YUM... beautifully decorated cakes and pies that one doesn't normally see around here... it's a literal feast for the eyes before you ever buy anything to eat!!! (I do need to brush up on my Spanish, as English is their second language... but Abel's English is fantastic. No one will have a problem understanding anyone, I don't think.) They offer free coffee with purchase, and if you had been there when Abel had brought out a fresh tray of croissants straight out of the oven... I'm talking SWOON!!! Oh yeah... y'all have to stop in. You really do. The visual makes you want one of EVERYTHING. I think he and his family will do well. Wedding cakes or quinceañeras... parties... birthdays... Abel and his lovely family can handle it beautifully; literally AND figuratively!
