I cannot recommend Dr. Steffen Sum at Desert Veterinary Specialists highly enough except to say that I wish he took human patients because I would entrust my care to him. During our recent visit for our dog Tobias, Dr. Sum was clear, comprehensive, attentive, and obviously knowledgeable about conditions unique to our dog's breed. He gave us more time that any of my human care providers have given in years. I've never seen a more caring and compassionate group of people. We had our Mia in to have a tumor removed. They texted us to let us know that she was doing good and again when Dr Huber was scrubbing in. Dr Huber called after she had come out of the anesthesia to let us know about her surgery and how she was doing. He gave us her care instructions over the phone and written instructions when we picked her up. When we picked her up we were given instructions on her medications and care. We were referred to Dr. Huber after my dog didn't get out of bed one day and wasn't able to move her hindquarters. She suffered from an allergic reaction which resulted in hives all over her body and the inflammation was so bad that she found it painful to even move. The Vet on the Run (mobile vet) came to my house, looked at her, gave her a Cortizone shot, and said she wanted Dr. Huber to take a look at her gait, as it appeared that she was favoring her left leg. I couldn't see it because to me, that's the way she always walked. She told me he was the best. She wanted him to check her back, knees, and hips to make sure we wouldn't be making a difficult decision five years from now. We waited a month for an appointment to make sure she wasn't under the influence of any of the medication she was on. This way Dr. Huber was able to videotape her and put her through a series of tests to check her musculature, skeletal, and nervous system. It was neat watching the slow-motion videos from different angles. Dr. Huber and his surgical nurse were so thorough and gentle and got down on the floor with her that my dog didn't want to leave this place. The best news was she checked out with no significant problems. Dr. Huber said if anything else occurs to bring her back in & at that time we would sedate her and do x-rays, but at this time he didn't see any need for it. My baby girl, Brandy, had a growth in her mouth that needed to be removed, Dr. Yee is great, she explains everything to great detail and cares about each pet as if they were her own. The day of surgery they updated me several times to let me know that Brandy was doing good, It was a long day since they started at around 12:30 and didn't finish until around 6:00. I got there at around 7:30 to pick Brandy up and Kathy and Dr Yee were there, thinking that they probably wanted to get out of there cuz it was late, they both answered my questions without making me feel rushed, they were both fantasic. Outstanding patient care! Our 6 month old puppy needed oral surgery to correct some issues he was having that made him stop eating due to pain. Dr. Yee's office was able to squeeze us in for a consultation last minute and he was in surgery 3 days later. I received updates during surgery and Dr. Yee texted throughout the weekend (surgery was on a Friday) to check on our boy and see how he was recovering. It makes me sad to write this review. We chose this vet upon the yelp reviews and we were confident our dog was going to be treated right based on the first consultation with Dr.Yee. She appeared to be kind and gentle. Unfortunately,first impression was not what we received. Our 5 lb chihuahua is a handful but our other dental experiences with her have been easy. We picked her up and were informed they could not clean up after surgery because she wouldn't stay still. We understood and took our dog home. We expected a follow up call the next day, or the next week or the following week. Nothing and our dog is still traumatized. We called today to express our unhappiness and after a few excuses, Kathy finally said she was sorry and would let Dr.Yee know. We cannot in good faith recommend this Dr. and the office. Thumbs up. My Cat lost a lot of weight but was eating frequently. He vomited about 5 times a week. After a full work up, we were referred by our regular Vet, Dr. Dieringer of VCA Desert Animal Hospital in Palm Springs to a specialty Vet Group for an abdominal ultrasound scan which DVS is equipped for. Per the Desert Veterinary Specialists brochure, all of the Vets there are board-certified specialists. There are six such Vets each with their own specialty. According to DVS, these Vets completed 4-7 years advanced training prior to passing their boards to obtain their Diplomate in their specialty (ie Board Certified). Dr. Brian Allett DVM, DACVR (radiology) examined my Cat Poody. The appointment was honored, I did not wait long. Dr. Allett has a good manner & spent probably 15 minutes + explaining the results & going through a Q&A. I was impressed. Poody's results were promptly transmitted to Dr. Dieringer who called me the next day. We will be treating Poody for irritable bowl syndrome IBS with steroids which can also treat low level lymphomas which I pray is not the root cause of the IBS. Poody was previously put on a special diet of food made from rabbit fto determine if he had developed a food allergy. read more

When the end came and Bonnie crossed the Rainbow Bridge without medical assistance, their office was immediately notified by Dr. Moffat at VCA. When our regular vet diagnosed my beloved dog with aggressive bone cancer in February, he recommended we go see Dr. Dennis Macy at Desert Veterinary Specialists. Dr. Macy splits his time between several offices in Las Vegas, Colorado and Palm Desert and is exactly who we needed to see. Dr. Macy got down on the floor with my dog (who doesn't love going to the vet) to do the exam. He is kind and gentle and his presence reassured Pumpkin, but most importantly, he knows his stuff. He outlined four treatment options, from "do-nothing" to the extreme -- removal of 3 ribs, plus 6 months of heavy duty chemo, with several other courses of treatment in between. We chose a middle path, no surgery and "metronomic chemotherapy" which involved a non-steroidal pain killer and a chemo pill twice a week to inhibit tumor growth. He also outlined what statistical prognosis each course offered, as well as a clear picture of how this disease progresses (with a rib tumor, usually lung cancer sets in). Needless to say, the costs between each option varied wildly, but thankfully, we have a wonderful insurance company PetPlan USA, so cost wasn't much of a consideration, but what I really appreciated about Dr. Macy was that he wasn't pushing the spendy options, he gave us the facts, answered all of our questions and said "you need to think of me as your quarterback." Dr. Macy's assistant Gina has been wonderful, patient and timely in returning phone calls and email and answering questions, no matter how lame. We took Pumpkin for her three month exam and the news is good -- her lungs are still clear and the tumor's growth has been inhibited -- it is actually smaller so her life expectancy post-diagnosis has been revised upwards. Dr. Macy had told us that none of the options, including the one we chose are a cure for this form of cancer, but it seems we are impeding the progress of the disease and Pumpkin is still experiencing a pain-free and fun existence. A testament to how good the environment at DVS is -- on our most recent visit, when we pulled into the parking lot, Pumpkin stood up, put her head out the window and wagged her tail enthusiastically. She knew where we were and wasn't scared or unhappy to be there. **Update (8/13/13) It is now six months since initial diagnosis and Pumpkin is still going strong. The lump is slowly growing, but she is way more full of energy than any other nearly 13 year old dog I've ever met. She is happy, active and still shows no side-effects from her twice weekly chemo treatments. We are so grateful for this grace time. **Update (10/14/13) Our darling Pumpkin passed away peacefully in my arms on October 6, 2013. She lived far longer (and with an amazing quality of life almost right till the end) than the February diagnosis of aggressive Osteosarcoma would have allowed, thanks to the treatment from Dr. Macy. I miss my girl like crazy, but am grateful for the 7 months we got, when she was only supposed to last for two. My girl made it to her thirteenth birthday. RIP Pumpkin, best dog ever. A final word: PetPlan USA. They have saved our bacon, financially, on this and Pumpkin didn't have insurance until a year or so ago. They insure anyone who has a clean bill of health no matter the age. Our premiums were 26$ a month according to the plan and deductable we chose. They are paying 80% of this whole thing. I'm really impressed with Dr. Judith Yee at DVS. She came recommended by friends of friends, and my dog broke a tooth & needed care. The office is very clean & modern, the staff was exceptionally friendly & helpful. Dr. Yee is extremely personable & knowledgable, and took a lot of time to examine my dog, and even though he hates vets & tries to bite (I have to muzzle him - he's a 90 lb. German Shepherd Dog), she got him calmed down & soon they were best friends! She carefully went over all the options (even the do-nothing option) and was able to take him right away. His tooth had rotted & she decided to do a full extraction, but he came through with flying colors, and seemed to be pretty much pain free within a day. Partly this is because he's a strong healthy dog, but it's also due to the care they took with the procedure. Dr. Yee even made a follow up call to check on him! Highly recommended! read more

It was early in September when I discovered a tiny lump....about the size of a small pea, at the back of her jaw. I took my 12 year old Bassett Hound, Cookie, to Animal Samartins, who is my regular vet. Biopsy, a grueling couple of days lead to the conclusion that she had a very aggressive melanoma. My vet recommended Dennis Macy, a world class canine oncologist, who works out of this office several times a month. Flying between Las Vegas, Boulder, and Palm Desert. Within weeks the tumor had gotten the size of a golf ball. Medications, cocktails of medications slowed the growth. I knew it was just a matter of weeks...maybe, months. Dr. Macy, Gina and the rest of the staff were so very helpful and supportive. One of the most difficult events that I remember to date. Cookster was made comfortable, and continued a normal, playful life. On December 19th 2011, she died peacefully in her sleep... In her favorite corner... On her favorite blanket. A part of me died with her... I especially want to thank the wonderful staff at the facility for all they have done. I hope you never have a situation like this.
