Overall, pretty good. Definitely a good bang for the buck. I was traveling with 3 dogs (because I'm crazy, haha) and the reviews for the most part seemed descent enough and the price couldn't be beat - don't see $60 rooms these days really.... And the pet fee was only $10 per pet. The room was nicely kept. It's an older place, but it was clean and descent. Had a fridge and microwave which was nice. Only thing, they need to get some new towels. The hand towel I used first was almost worn through.... That would be my main and only real issue. It was exactly what it seemed to be and just what I needed after a long day on the road, before another long day on the road - with a bunch of fur babies! Oh! And they let you have a free post card to mail and they'll stamp it and send it. And give you a free sticker. Off the original Route 66. Very cute touch.... Feels old school. read more

12/11/2024 Hard Pass! We checked in last night after a long drive and the lady was super nice and personable. When I got to the room I was disappointed but she was so nice I just thought I would deal with it. The room was outdated, in need of repairs and there was a wet spot on the carpet. We were in a pet room. I came down for coffee this morning and Cheaters was on the TV with constant screaming and the man behind the counter was looking down at his phone and never looked up. I picked up the remote and began to look for national news or something less dramatic. While was searching he asked for the remote and I asked for national news. He tuned it to the weather channel which is fine and typical for a hotel. Then he said really? You want to change the channel and then work on your laptop?! Even though that is exactly what he was doing he felt the need to scold me. Now he is watching the show on his phone with the same screaming. As guests are checking out he is very unipersonal and in fact keys dropped off are still sitting there as I type. There are 4 cameras here in the lobby so I wonder in management will even look. This was a pleasant little surprise in Northern New Mexico. We had been driving all day from Longview, Texas and were just looking for a place to stay where we could have our dog. We usually stay at Motel 6 because they're cheap and allow pets. We were planning to go to the Motel 6 in town when I saw billboards on the I 40 advertising an indoor heated pool and spa-I was hooked! I'm a sucker for an indoor pool and that sounded great after a long day on the road. They are pet friendly so we were allowed to bring our dog. The hotel is just right off the freeway so it was easy to get to. We happened to get the last room and it was $95 plus $10 for the pet fee. (Our dog is under 10 lbs so it might be more for larger dogs). The room was really nice and there's even a luggage cart if you pack heavy like I do. The rooms include a microwave and fridge which is a great bonus. The beds were comfy and the shower had strong water pressure which I love. Now, onto the indoor pool and spa! There is a code to get into the pool area. The pool was actually not heated but was still nice. I'm guessing they heat it in the winter. There are towels to use in the pool area and there were tables and chairs. My only complaint was that the spa had way too much chlorine and sitting in it, the fumes made you cough and choke. But it was still better than no spa at all! There is a nice sitting area outside with a porch swing and picnic tables. There are places to walk dogs too. There is also a free breakfast served from 6-9am. It includes cereal, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, fruit, a waffle station and toast and bagels. It was a really nice added bonus! You also get a free postcard and you can write it right there and they will pay postage and mail it for you. Overall we were really happy with our stay and would stay there again on our next cross country trek! read more

This is the second night that I was traveling with my English Bull Terrier, Winston. Compared to the night before this place was eerily similar. Walls of old glass and bare 6 foot long fluorescent lights set a downer mood. Did not smell or feel clean either. Lady working the front desk was very nice. Gave me good tip about the onion rings at Blake's Lotaburger across the street. There was a car almost in the front of the hotel that was abandoned. When they had the parking lot resurfaced they actually left the car there and asphalted around it. I thought it was pretty funny. This pretty much epitomizes the hotel. read more

It was so clean and so nice The prices are very reasonable, but it's the most cleanest hotel I have been in that's why I made sure I stayed here tonight. On my way back to AZ. The only nice thing I can say about this hotel is the front desk staff member, Twyla. Just a sweet person. Now all the bad things about the place. They rented us a room that isn't even done remodeling yet. FOR $95! Patched walls not painted, no room to even turn a wheelchair around in the handicap accessible room, shop lights over the bed for "bedside" lighting, my aunt who is an amputee almost fell because she couldn't keep her balance on the ridiculously slippery floor that has no business being in any bathroom much less for the handicapped. Just terrible for what they are asking for this room. We weren't told they were in the middle of remodeling. At least then we could've maybe made a better decision. read more

What it's not: a high end boutique hotel. What it is: a safe clean place along the I-40 with really nice staff, and walking distance to an independently owned steak house so you don't have to drive again until you wake up and get back on the highway. Were late getting in from SLC and was concerned about saying here, given some of the reviews. But, it was this or drive down the road, so I was willing to give it a shot. Glad I did! Is it fancy? No, but a good value for the $$$. It was clean, even though the clerk was hesitant to give us this room because it was for pets, but I couldn't see anything wrong with it. No coffee pot in the room, but had coffee downstairs. Breakfast was listed somewhere as a full breakfast. It's def continental at best, but guess what? McDonald's is next door. Bed was clean and comfortable. Clerk was pleasant and they mail postcards for you, which gave me a 60s vibe. If you want fancy, go somewhere else. But if you want to pay less than $100 for a comfortable room when traveling, Desert Inn is great! read more

Traveling by car strictly for the purpose of getting from one place to another is different than traveling by car for a vacation. You want to stay in inexpensive places, no frills are necessary. You just want to put your feet up for awhile, relax, and sleep in a clean room/bed. That said, I do base my choices of where we stay, on location, price, and reviews. We picked Desert Inn in Tucumcari because it was pet-friendly, affordable, convenient, and decent reviews. My question is, how can people who write reviews rate a place highly when it definitely is not? Just because the clerk is nice isn't reason enough to give a hotel a great rating! I appreciate that the desk clerk was pleasant. Truthfully, pleasantness is hard to find these days. When someone rates a hotel, it should be based, not only on employee courtesy, but more importantly, quality of rooms, cleanliness, value, among other things. That being said, $130 may not seem like much, but when you're hunkering down in a room that's more than outdated and smells like a soggy diaper, you know it's not going to be an enjoyable experience. Ok, so this is a room especially for guests with dogs. We paid extra to have our dogs stay with us. I appreciate that that amenity is offered, but are we not entitled to a clean room just like all the other guests? The furnishings were more than tired. We had a room with two queen beds. The sheets on my bed were extremely wrinkled. My first thought was were these sheets changed after the last guests? My husband stayed in the other bed and his sheets weren't wrinkled. Of course I'm going to assume my bed didn't have fresh sheets. I examined the sheets carefully and didn't see anything that might have hinted at a previous guest, so I could only hope! The dresser was so freaking old and worn. The refrigerator and microwave were in the closet area. They were plugged into an extension cord which was plugged into multi-outlet extender. Is that even legal? Just asking! Oh, and if you wanted to hang any clothes, there were hangers available right next to the fridge and microwave! Geez! Loved the mirrors that were placed above both beds, and the fluorescent lights above those big mirrors added such a nice touch to the ambience of the room. Not! The lovely carpet that looked in fairly new condition smelled like pee, really more like a wet soggy diaper, but since it's a room geared for pets, I'm going to guess one dog peed on it, then every other dog left their mark. We kept our dogs away from that area and took them outside several times so they wouldn't contribute to the problem! Why don't the owners just replace the carpet in the rooms where pets are allowed with the vinyl tile they have near the door and in the bathroom? The floors could be cleaned and disinfected after each guest instead of what we had to deal with. Another guest with a dog said her room smelled, too. Another geez! The bathroom was large and clean. There were two bath towels, two hand towels, and two washcloths. The towels were gym-towel quality. You can't get any lower quality than that! Could they have included one more towel to dry my hair? It was definitely needed! There was a container of shampoo/conditioner, but the manufacturer must have forgot to add the conditioner in the tube. It was definitely lacking! There was one little round bar of soap to be used at the sink and in the shower. Really? Geez #3! Fortunately, I brought my own body wash. On the positive side, parking was convenient, they had a small doggie area for them to do their business, a simple self-serve breakfast was available 6-9am, and there was a Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and McDonalds right next door. The clerk was very nice, but unfortunately there were too many negatives to say I recommend this place. Spend a little extra for nicer accommodations someplace else. We have stayed here multiple times in the past as we passed through between S. Texas & Colorado. Always a good quick place at a cheap rate. The only time I stay in anything other than a larger chain hotel. Tonight changed that unfortunately. As we were settling into bed after a very short 3 hour stay in our second floor room, I notice something near my son in the bed across from me. I jump up to see what it is and it's a bedbug crawling up towards him. (I have video but can't upload) Naturally I freaked out, removed my kids and pulled the bedding and found 3 total along with their feces/eggs/? in my kids' bed on the top sheet and on top of the slip at the mattress & killed them, releasing substantial blood. I couldn't get the mattress cover off to check for more but these were rather large so ‍. I then wake my husband who had just fallen asleep and found one under his side of the bed at the edge of the slip and mattress as well. Killed them all. 4 total in a few minutes and all veryyyy large. We promptly left with a refund (appreciate them offering first. that and past customer service is why we still give 2 stars, was 5 stars before tonight!). they had no other rooms available to move us to in the middle of the night. I am very worried normally about them Bc I hear they are so easy to spread and hard to get rid of. This is certainly a step one for us to check in the future! This is a first, and I'm having a hard time getting back to sleep Bc I feel that itchy feeling. Hopefully this is a one off for them and I know it's a risk they take at any hotel/motel, but it's enough that my family won't stay there again sadly as I've never seen this in a hotel and am only aware to what they are with us both being in the medical field. It's just not worth the risk to us, our family's health and our home, personally. I'd caution everyone who stays (anywhere) to check bedding inside and out, carpets & curtains/walls first to be safe. read more

I didn't want to leave one star but had to. This was the worst hotel we stayed at! Let's start with the bathroom the fan on ceiling was to loud & ceiling was coming down, than when you flushed the toilet it made this siren sound for 2 minutes it was really weird, bed was so uncomfortable I didn't get any sleep was said the same thing. Breakfast was your choice of hard boiled eggs, no meats no scrambled eggs. There was cereal, toast. So if you want a better breakfast go somewhere else. I was charged $95 for this place I should get a refund cuz they said on there website it was remodeled don't know what they remodeled but don't sleep in room 114 it's a nightmare. Picked this motel by chance and WOW was it a GREAT pick! Easy and fast check in. Room was great. Continental breakfast was wonderful and one of the better ones I have eaten. I can't go any lower, but I would! Small room, smells like smoke, large - LARGE- amount of broken glass still lying outside the building just around corner from entrance to the wing. and upper floor has whole half wall boarded up with plywood, visible so something has definitely occurred here. Seems like a safety hazard to me that there are sharp shards of glass just left lying there. Staff tried to be accommodating re: our complaints but place is full up due to holiday travel. Still, believe me, this place deserves no more than two "stars". And... yes there's more!! The "secure" door to our wing is badly damaged- doesn't show so well in photo but it can be breached by someone determined. And, hand rail for stairs is loose. Driving on I40 and got stuck in a winter storm so decided to stay here for the night but was surprised they charged $105/room for what it was (minus 1 star) Hotel next door only had one room king left and needed a double so gave this a try. I looked online which typically rooms are $65/night which makes more sense for what you get. Unfair to price gauge a tired family stuck in a winter storm. The rooms were very basic proving only one mini bar of soap to wash hands and body. The mattress was mediocre quality (no pillow top and can hear springs when moving) leaving me with an achy back when I woke up (minus another star). Room was clean and everything functional for the 13 hr stay including a bigger than standard hotel mini fridge and microwave. The noise insulation is non-existent as loud pipes from other rooms taking a shower kept my toddler up. Front desk lady was nice and included free breakfast. read more

2 dogs in room near us continuously barking for 30+ minutes. We knocked on door and no one answered. Just rude people who left their dogs. I called front desk to ask what they could do and told nothing. Full house so couldn't move us. Would not give us a discount. Said they would call the room! I told them no one there. They said they accept pets. When I suggested they separate pet rooms from others they seemed surprised at such a logical suggestion. Will never stay here again even though we travel this route regularly. I will also tell everyone I know. We were treated like the bad guys. read more

Very clean & locally owned. Got an on-line late booking deal for $50 (single queen bed). Desk clerk was friendly and informative. Room was small but quiet and comfy. Everything looks new. Plenty of hot water which arrives almost instantly. Towels very nice. Indoor pool and fitness center which, after a long drive are a welcome sight. And indoor access to the room improves safety. Extensive breakfast starting at 6 AM. McDonalds, Sonic and others are very close (less than a block). I rated it down 1 star because of no elevator and no coffee available in room or even in the lobby until 4 AM. read more

A little gem of a locally owned hotel. Definitely not a 5 star luxury stay but for Tucumcari, it ain't too bad! Receptionist was very nice yet efficient (8:30 pm line) and she promptly processed customers and waiting was at a minimum. Also, in spite of an older facility, everything worked. Cable TV, Pool, jacuzzi, fridge, microwave, ice machine, 24 hr free coffee and juice, remodel is pretty damn decent with tiled bathroom. I would definitely stay here again. Not a good day for me.. Called to make reservations, was told to hold. Gave up after several minutes . Local Tucumcari resident and have heard good things about this hotel, so just came directly straight to the hotel to register for the night. The clerk at the desk was in a state of confusion, was working on various reservations (assumption). And when he finished his business came to assist us. First thing I noticed was his "420" baseball cap including embroidered marijuana leaf. Not sure this is something I would have my desk clerks wearing at the time of check in. Was courteous but still seemed confused. Checked us in and we went up to our rooms (had an out of town guest with me so reserved two rooms). Got to my guests room and the key did not work. Left her there, took the key down and the same clerk said, I don't know what the morning crew did, reprogrammed the keys and I went back upstairs to give my friend her keys. When I went to check in to my room, guess what? Key didn't work so had to go down to the desk again. After driving 14 straight hours from SLC to discover my furnace was not working and house was 53 degrees, my patience was already at issue. Got to my room and crashed. Woke up at 11:00, and went out to find a late snack and beverage. When I returned, went to my room, Guess what? Key did not work. Went back downstairs where I was greeted with a sign stating that the clerk was away from the desk. I rang the bell, and a gentleman appeared, obviously irritated that I rang the desk bell. I explained my key did not work, and with a serious attitude was informed that I needed to keep my key away from other cards. I explained that my card was not near any keys, was in my coat pocket. He was very irritated and said" I was just telling you that!" I explained that I was familiar with the issue of demagnetization of hotel keys, that I didn't appreciate his attitude and didn't need a lecture from him at 11:00 pm at night. Went back to my room grabbed my wallet and headed out to car where I observed the same clerk watching TV in the lobby. He seemed disturbed that interrupted him.. i have always heard good things about this property, but I have to say, the multiple interactions with the hotel employees soured my opinion. I don't believe I would stay here again or recommend any out of town visitors staying at the property. With several hotels in town, not sure this establishment appreciated my business. Overall. Property was clean, room met my expectations (Ice machine out of order) and that is why they received the two star rating. But hotel employees left a bad impression. read more

We're moving and hauling a small trailer. Twyla was very informative and told us where we could park the car and trailer. She was very helpful and was able to give us a pet friendly room with our 70lb dog. When we walked into our room it looked very comfy cozy, however there was faint smell of dog from other guests in the past but it wasn't that bad. -The bed was very comfortable it's little on the medium side of soft/hard. The air conditioning can run all night long which made it perfect in the New Mexico heat. -The bathroom was in good condition. -For the price of the room it was a good price for what your getting. I think they should charge more but for a 3 star hotel you're not going to find anything better. read more

This place is clean and the staff is friendly. They allow pets for a $10 pet fee. The beds were a bit too firm for me so I had a hard time sleeping. All of the equipment seemed pretty new but the whole room could probably use an update. It get the job done If you are just looking for a place to stay for the night. This is a very cost effective option as it's almost 1/3 the price of surrounding hotels. read more

After being on the road for two days driving from Los Angeles, my friend and I decided we desperately needed a soak in a hot tub. We already had reservation at another hotel but cancelled it when we found this place through Yelp. The guy who took my reservation was kind enough to offer us the on-line deal, even though I called them directly. This may have been due to the fact that there were hardly any other guests there that day. Whatever, we were thrilled to get a room with 2 double beds that was clean, was very close to the super-clean hot tub and only cost us $65.00! If I ever planned to be in Tucumcari overnight again, I'd definitely book here again. Just know that dining options are seriously slim in this small town. Even slimmer on a Sunday night. I thought this hotel was pretty great! My room was very clean, comfortable, and felt safe. Despite being there on the 4th of July, I found the hotel to be pretty quiet. I was greeted by a very friendly staff member who really seemed to know her stuff. I'm docking one star for two reasons. First, the housekeeping staff hung the toilet paper rolls in opposing directions. Second, the coffee was terrible and there isn't a way to make coffee in your room. Breakfast was eh. They had instant eggs that weren't the worst. Pretty much what I would expect from a hotel that size. I definitely would stay again and I would recommend to my friends and family as well. read more

Great "mom-n-pop" place on old Route 66 just off I-40. Room are clean and amenities were nice. Definitely liked the Dr Who door and the Lady Liberty with Route 66 light out front. Breakfast was modest but filling with eggs, fruit, yogurt, waffles and cereal. Coffee was actually pretty good. Pool was fine and had no issues with hot tub. Better value $ for $ than the chains that surround it. Who wants a cookie cutter chain when you can "go local"?? Will stay again when we pass through. read more

Tucumcari, New Mexico is a great place to visit when you are taking a long trip. I visited the Desert Inn a few months ago and had no issues. It was affordable and decided to stay again. However, this time, it was a terrible experience. I had reserved a room on the first floor due to a leg injury. This place does not have an elevator, I am unclear why they charge more for first-floor rooms. The clerk, Al Patel, was at the front desk. When I discovered I did not get the right room, he was not willing to correct the error under any circumstances except to charge me more for the first-floor room. I had driven 10 hours and I was tired. When I got to my second-floor room, it was unacceptable. The view was a chimney rooftop, a toilet that continued to flush, and a very small bed. My sister and I told Al the room was not acceptable and could we have another room. I explained I had been there before without a problem. He told us he could provide a refund because he didn't "feel" any room would be acceptable. I told him that was not true since I had been there before. He was on the computer for several minutes. And when he was finished, he gave me a receipt for a refund! In essence, he kicked us out of the hotel. It was 9 pm at night! The room he gave us was substandard and we just wanted another one. This treatment by Al Patel was a disgrace. Every hotel should want repeat business. We have never been treated this way before in all our years of traveling. Most importantly, Al Patel told us, "He did not need our business." BEWARE! read more

Needed a place to sleep for a few hours on a long drive from Las Vegas to Dallas. The other brand hotels next door wanted over $100 and this place was $65. It is a converted Microtel. No complaints at all, the TV had tons of channels, bed was fine and the shower was hot. No room or street noise. Looked like they had an extensive free breakfast but I didnt try it. Walked in to the Inn and Twyla was very friendly and explained all the details of staying here. There's a pool and little fitness room for those of you who are prepared for that.
