Holy Spirit Church

Holy Spirit Church

Very different experience going on at Holy Spirit in Palmyra. Most Catholic Churches (for the…read moreminority on Yelp that even do the church thing let alone the Catholic Church thing) are normally either these ancient buildings which are historical relics from another time or they fall into the period of Blech! buildings which got built maybe say forty to sixty years ago which are far more utilitarian in their design, aka, really ugly looking. The building at Holy Spirit is only a few years old and while not exact anything special to look at, once you get inside it feels almost like it should have a fantastic LEED rating because there are a lot of regular windows (sorry, no stained glass) that let in a lot of light. At the 8am mass we we're at you could have turned the lights off and the sunlight would have made that change unnoticeable. The mass itself was fairly standard with Father Jim giving a nice homily about The Transfiguration which made a lot of sense as he tied a few different points together very eloquently. Two other things I noticed which I found interesting. 1. The church has an adoration chapel that is open 24/7. At least in my limited travels that's almost unheard of to have any part of a church open 24/7. Very, very cool. 2. Very transparent bulletin which includes everything you would expect like PREP class times, Lenten Friday fish fry info to the outstanding debt amount that is still owed on the building itself. If there is one thing that I would say is at least to me not exactly up to snuff it would be the music. No regular full sized pipe organ here. Most music was done via pre-recorded backing tracks done on a keyboard were it was just push one button and go. Easy no doubt but musically it's also cheesy no doubt. Sort of the Ecclesiastical version of the old Will Ferrell SNL skit with him as Marty Culp. While there are a few different Catholic Churches in the Hershey area I think we made the right choice coming to Holy Spirit and in the future if we're back in the area this is certainly the place we will come back to when it's time to get our Jesus on. Mass Schedule: 6:30pm on Mon.; 9:00am on: Tues., Wed. & Fri. Saturday Vigil: 4:00 PM Sunday Masses: 8:00 & 10:30am Holy Days: Vigil 6:30pm, Day of: 9:00am & 6:30pm
