The menu changes every two weeks depending on what is fresh and available. While the food was excellent, what puts this restaurant at a five star level is the personalized service. It is a one man show in here - he is probably the owner, manager, and wait staff all in one. He came over to our table, had a small talk about our tastes, and suggested an excellent red wine to go with our meal. So far this is normal for most restaurants of this caliber. As we were finishing our meal, he came over and asked if we want dessert. I was hesitant and my husband was too full for dessert. However, Mr. All-in-one (I cannot remember his name) encouraged us to try the dessert and then brought us some dessert wine to try (on the house!). He explained to us how this particular wine pairs well with the dessert. The best part is that he genuinely wanted us to enjoy our meal and experience his wonderful hospitality. That alone puts this restaurant on the five star level. Service beyond excellence and the food is delicious! One of the highlights of our culinary tour of Helsinki.

The lunch is a buffet with a choice of salads, a few warm dishes - always a vegetarian alternative available - and some dessert in addition to coffee to wrap it up. The restaurant also serves breakfast in the mornings 7:30-9:30, mainly for the hostel guests, but quite practical for us working at the campus too, but it's the lunch that is worth coming here fore. It didn't take long for the word to spread about MAU KAS in Otaniemi, around lunchtime there is already quite a lot of people, but with the additional two cabinets in use there is room for everyone. This hidden gem in Otaniemi is well worth a visit IMHO.

The location is a reasonable distance from central Helsinki but there is a tram that gets you two short blocks away. It is an industrial neighborhood and the street was not terribly well lit but we found it and all was good. Coatroom area at the front and we were greeted by the tour guide who had just started our tour two minutes early. An introduction and history of the Distillery and then she brought us back to where the magic happens. Lots to see in here with stills, tanks, mashers and whatnot. Very interactive with some things to sniff and feel so that you can start to understand what goes on in the process. Upstairs to a reserved table, this is where the tasting happens. Three glasses prepared including Applejack, White dog and a London Gin. A bottle of tonic water was available too and then at the end, individual bottles of the Helsinki Long Drink to consume. All of it delicious, though the Long Drink was very tart from the grapefruit juice. Very interesting to see all of this and experience it. Well worth the €20. There is food to be had here as well. They have seasonal outside seating, and inside the upstairs is more for dining while the downstairs is a bar setting. (It is not strict, just a guideline.) The on tap selection is fairly limited, the bottle selection slightly broader. I started with a bottled domestic Huvila Pale Ale (Malmgårdin Panimo). They keep a rotating seasonal draft -- this time it was Brooklyn Lager. I had a pint since I don't recall having seen this on tap in Finland. Storied tradition notwithstanding, what differentiates Ukko-Munkki from any other random Helsinki pub is the food. They serve up hearty portions from Finnish classics like meatballs, to steaks, burgers, and pizzas. On this particular Saturday afternoon visit I ordered the escargot with goat cheese -- my personal favorite. Tasty -- hadn't changed at all since the first time I had it years ago. So if you're in Munkkiniemi with a hankering for a traditional pub setting, look no further than Ukko-Munkki!
