Come to Sunnyside Queens and go to Stray Vintage. I moved into Sunnyside a coupla years ago. As I was walkin around the neighborhood, checkin different locales out, I heard some insanely melodic and soulful music coming from this hole in the wall on the side of a large apartment complex. I walked in and I saw walls and boxes filled with vinyls, antique furniture, vintage 1950s movie posters, Surfboards???!!!! Just a plethora of unique, fun stuff. I immediately knew this was an amazing place that id be frequenting a lot As I wandered around in absolute awe of the amazingness of the place, a tallish cool lookin guy greeted me with a super warm, "Hey man, how can I help you?!" I immediately exclaimed, "This is the coolest freakin shop ever." And so began a quick friendship with the owner and one of the coolest guys in Sunnyside, Danny. Listen I know it sounds like im hyping this place up and guess freakin what...youre absolutely right! Since ive been going to Stray I found out thats its more than just a store. Its a gathering place for all sorts of unique characters and individuals. A meeting place for community where you can talk and just listen to great music. Vinyl albums are in wooden cases separated by either letters or band names. Their main thing is metal, but they have a healthy selection of 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s rock, jazz, blues, and more. They also have some unique Japanese pressings you wouldn't ordinarily see. They also have a selection of tapes, and I think a few CDs. There are a few items of memorabilia. You can listen to any album you want, as long as it isn't new. All-in-all, this is a great used record store (with some new). And, while mainly catering to metal, they have a very good selection of other styles and genres of music.

The lady running the space was warm and hospitable, welcoming me in as I approached the stairs. The scent of essential oils and incense filled the air, drawing me in to see the available wares. It seems feels is a carefully curated vintage shop with accessories, vinyl and natural products (soaps, incense, etc.) available for purchase. The prices were higher than expected, but on par with Williamsburg and Chelsea vintage shops. If fancy thrifting is your jam, go by and check them out.

Scorpion Records opened in October 2020 and I'm glad to see this shop still open over 3 years later. Record Selection: 4/5 Pretty good selection of reggae LPs. I picked up a Paragons record for $20 and a very clean copy of a Mott The Hoople record for $10. The records could be a little more curated. While crate-digging I noticed some records were missing their covers and some cardboard sleeves were empty with no record inside. Value-wise, the prices were set to about double the median price on Discogs. Customer Service: 5/5 Jake was helpful and hooked me up with a Grateful Dead sticker. I was looking for one their foil Scorpion Records stickers, but they were out of them. Ambience: 5/5 Christmas lights and plenty of tchotchkes contribute to a unique ambiance while shopping (see video). Special Events: 5/5 Jazz Night is on Mondays at 6pm. The owner tests all the used records and labels them so you don't have to worry about ending up with something that sounds bad Best part though is the cats Sushi and Emerson are basically the mascots.
