Albert Heijn

Albert Heijn

Since you're likely visiting the Stadshart mall for multiple things (like your C&A and WE Fashion…read moreruns), it's great to highlight how this Albert Heijn fits into a shopping day. Here's a natural-sounding review that captures the "massive" scale of this specific location: This Albert Heijn in the Amstelveen mall is absolutely massive. It is easily one of the largest supermarkets I've been to in the area, and the selection reflects that--they have everything from a huge fresh produce section to a great variety of international products. The layout is very organized and easy to navigate despite the size. One thing I really appreciate is how tech-friendly it is; they have the handheld scanners at the entrance so you can scan as you go, and the self-checkout machines have an English language option which is super helpful if your Dutch is a bit rusty. Just a heads-up for fellow travelers or expats: while they are great about most things, payment can be a little finicky. Like many AH locations, they are picky with credit cards and sometimes even Apple Pay, so it's always a good idea to have your physical debit card or a Maestro card on hand just in case. Overall, it's a fantastic, clean, and well-stocked store. Plus, since it stays open until 10 pm, it's the perfect place to grab groceries after the rest of the mall shops have closed for the day!

This is a large Albert Heijn store, located in Stadshart Amstelveen, a shopping centre a short tram…read moreride away from Amsterdam. The layout of the store was easy to follow, they had handheld scanners at the front of the store which allowed you to scan items as you shop, before heading to a checkout, which is a useful feature although I did not use them on this occasion. Despite being a reasonably large store, I was able to find the two things which I was looking for without requiring assistance. I came in to return some plastic bottles for the statigeld (deposit on plastic drinks and cans in The Netherlands) and purchase a new bottled drink myself. Despite not being in an overly touristy area, the staff members appeared to speak basic English, and the self-checkout machines had an English option, which was a pleasant surprise for me, as I'm not lucky enough to speak Dutch. I had an issue using Apple Pay at checkout, and I found out that unlike most Albert Heijn locations they don't accept it here, I had to use my regular card instead. It seemed strange as I was able to pay contactless with the same card linked to my Apple Pay, but they just wouldn't accept payment without the physical card. 4* - A good Albert Heijn overall, the 10 pm closing time is also handy as it means they stay open when most of the other shops remain closed, still allowing you to get any groceries in the evenings.
