Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services - Excelsior House

Struggling with Mental Health or Substance Abuse issues along with fears of a virus can make the…read moregoal of overcoming seemingly impossible. I was fortunate enough to have an option at Excelsior House to build my new life. The staff faces many challenges between shift changes, varying degrees of hostility, and constant changes with health care policy ESPECIALLY NOW. But they provide a safe and very well managed program where I was able to focus on recovering and healing many deep and long standing issues in my life. The Group Sessions were very well managed and I enjoyed the plentiful resources given to those who needed additional services, such as housing, or employment, or medical services. The Staff and Administration was wonderful, I really miss some of them. Certainly there were challenges but every day we were fed, kept safe, given medications. The rooms are shared by two people and they're required to be kept clean with daily chores. The rehabilitation through structured chores pairs patients up together in teams of 2 or 3 people and each day they rotate. I certainly enjoyed cooking and found that to be my favorite. When it came to confronting personal issues, each day we were having 2 group sessions, and at least an hour and a half to research and examine what our "new lives" would be like. There would seem to be a lot of repetition but that is necessary. I felt safe and comfortable even with challenges I had with certain staff members as they were very infrequent and mostly resolved. I'm on day 35 of my new life and I couldn't have done it without being there. I miss everyone, I miss the once a day walks the staff would supervise, and working together to play games in the evening. They have 2 computers and a very nice living room to use, I would on occasion join to watch movies lol! the restrictions on moving around and going out were very challenging for me, but they were necessary. In all I have a very favorable scenario and I'll miss Courtney, Matt, Vanessa, Toya, Trebin, Shelly, and Arianna and although I may have forgotten names, there are a couple of special ladies that provided transportation for me to handle personal things that required supervision and I hope they know they're missed too!

My experience at this facility was deeply disappointing and, at times, traumatic. Rather than…read morefeeling safe and supported during a vulnerable period in my life, I experienced sexual harassment from another client, racial bias, negligence from staff, and an overall lack of professionalism. One of the most serious incidents involved ongoing harassment by another client. This individual managed to sneak pills into the facility and repeatedly harassed me. When I reported the behavior, I expected the staff to prioritize my safety. Instead, I felt dismissed and blamed. Rather than taking meaningful action to protect me, they allowed him to remain in the program. Even after my psychotherapist advocated on my behalf, the harassment continued. I was told that a solution would be implemented the following day, but nothing was ever done. It felt as though the staff were more concerned about protecting the individual who was harassing me than ensuring my safety and well-being. I was treated as though I was the problem simply because I stood up for myself. Another incident is where one of my peers caressed my leg and told me he wanted to move in with him. That was sexual harassment and I had to keep that incident to myself because they wouldn't have done anything. This client was known to disturb every woman and even kissed my other peer on her face without her permission too. She went to tell staff and THEY DID NOTHING nonetheless. The main clinician, Shanna, handled my concerns with negligence and a lack of compassion. When I expressed how frustrated and unsafe I felt, she minimized my concerns and made me feel as though I was overreacting. She even referred to me as nothing more than a "gossiper," which was incredibly hurtful and unprofessional. When I decided to leave the facility, Shanna saw me gathering my belongings but never acknowledged me, offered an apology, or attempted to address everything that had happened. Her silence spoke volumes about the lack of accountability within the program. I also experienced what I perceived to be a racist microaggression from Aubrey, one of the counselors. After returning from an appointment, Aubrey questioned whether the Apple Watch in my backpack actually belonged to me, implying that I had stolen it or was being dishonest. This accusation was especially offensive because my Apple Watch had been documented on my belongings list when I was first admitted to the facility. There was absolutely no legitimate reason to question my ownership of it, and I found the interaction both discriminatory and degrading. Another staff member, Cassy, was consistently rude and unwelcoming. She never introduced herself to me or to other clients and instead made us feel inferior. During one incident, another client ate my food. Rather than holding the person responsible accountable, Cassy blamed me for "coming downstairs late," even though I came downstairs only after Aubrey instructed me to do so. She never apologized after Shanna informed her of how her actions had affected me. Her unwillingness to take responsibility demonstrated a troubling lack of professionalism. I also observed what appeared to be favoritism and unequal treatment among clients. Staff often gave certain clients significantly more leniency while holding others to stricter standards. It seemed that some clients were treated differently based on their diagnoses, while those of us who were considered more capable were expected to take on responsibilities that should have belonged to staff. We were frequently expected to clean up after other clients, supervise or assist them beyond what should reasonably be expected of fellow residents, and complete tasks that were part of the staff's responsibilities. Rather than receiving consistent therapeutic support, many of us felt as though we were doing the work of the employees. The environment often felt less like a professionally operated treatment program and more like a system where clients were expected to compensate for inadequate staffing and supervision. The facility also failed to enforce its own rules fairly. Clients were prohibited from having vapes, yet staff openly vaped in front of us, creating a clear double standard and undermining the credibility of the rules we were expected to follow. Throughout my stay, I repeatedly felt dismissed, invalidated, and unsupported. My concerns were minimized, promises to address serious safety issues were not kept, accountability was lacking at every level, and the standards applied to clients were inconsistent. Instead of receiving the care and protection I needed, I left feeling retraumatized by the very people entrusted with my well-being.

Over the past 9 months--an oddly symbolic amount of time during which to experience a rebirth--I've made progress of which I'm very proud. I'm learning to treat myself with greater compassion, and navigating my emotions in much healthier ways than I ever have. As a result of my gradually increasing patience and self-love, I'm a better communicator than I've ever been and feel much better equipped to write this next chapter of my life. I owe a great deal of my success to the work Stella has done with me. I'm beyond grateful for her skill, compassion, intellect, and overall grace as a healing presence in my life. With her guidance and the work she helps me to do, I've managed to salvage my business, improve my ability to interact with all kinds of people in stressful situations, and learned how to show myself the compassion I deserve. I can't thank Stella enough for the progress she's helping me to make, and I look forward to working with her for years to come. For me specifically, I wanted to track my progress. Sheena knows how I am about tangible results, haha! That being said every quarter I hit milestones that proved I was blooming in ways I never have. It has been a revitalizing, emotional, thrilling, honest, and sometimes aggravating journey - but one that has truly changed my life thanks to Sheena. I always come away with resources, readings, or tips to keep me motivated in-between sessions to keep on keeping on. She is not overbearing, over-communicative, intrusive, or adamant. She is inspiring in her own right. I highly recommend any one of Sheena's many offerings. The hardest part of committing to this type of service is finding the right person you connect with and trust. Sheena hands down is that person.

Airport Marina works with the client on a sliding scale to find a fee that works for them. Amazingly gracious of them, I can't emphasize how helpful this service is. Mental health care is a huge issue in this country. Nonprofit agencies such as Airport Marina are working to combat the lack of mental health care for poor people, and all people for that matter. I am not sure where they get their funding, I am guessing lots of grants and private donations. I don't think enough people appreciate what they are providing. All of their therapists are, "trainees," or students that are gaining their required hours to become certified therapists. I've been coming here intermittently for 12 or so years, and I always felt like I was given the proper attention and feedback. The intake process is thorough and they take into consideration your schedule and preference regarding your therapist. The office is located on La Tijera Blvd not too far from the 405. There is ample parking. The office is clean and quiet. All in all an excellent mental health agency. I'm a big believer in talk therapy, so if you are going through a tough time or even just stressed out, I encourage you to come here.
