My husband and I were in the process of moving to Jefferson City with my sister (who was mentally challenged) and our pets. We discovered that my sister was terminally ill and I knew I would have to make funeral arrangements quickly. I remembered how wonderful they were when my father-in-law passed away two years ago. They made an unbearable situation bearable. They got to know me and sat and listened. It was especially hard because we had lost my mother just a year before. They truly cared and when the time came, they let me know that they would take good care of my sister. They were truly concerned with my feelings. I can't begin to say how much I appreciated their care and kindness.

One of the things that make this cemetery so beautiful is how green the grass and trees are. The day I visited, there were a couple of men, mowing the lawn, weed wacking and cleaning the roads. There is a huge amount of silk flowers and flags on the gravestones, something that is not super popular in SoCal because of the unrelenting sun and the guidelines set by most cemeteries. This cemetery is crowned by many, gorgeous, leafy trees and a peacefulness that begs a person to stay longer than they intended. A great place to have safe walk, there is also an outdoor mausoleum, also loaded with hundreds of silk flowers and American flags.

The cemetery staff, while nice, have been incredibly difficult to work with. My mom's headstone did not get placed until one month ago, 15 months after she had passed away! We have still not received an invoice and our family would like to resolve that situation, I have e-mailed the manager of the cemetery numerous times requesting an invoice and still have not received this. This time of year is very hard and would be nice to have this part of the grieving process resolved.

Surrounded by homes that post-date the graves, the site can make one consider the transitory nature of things. Jefferson City National Cemetary is built on a hill, a unique aspect. It's a confined area, surrounded by houses and near a major street, but inside the gates it's quiet and well maintained. You can tell the age of some sites by the large trees that are taking over the headstones, and, in at least two instances, forced the caretakers to replace the headstones entirely. I wonder, based on the spacing, if there isn't at least one gravesite that has been lost entirely by the tree and its occupant lost to history. Although my visit was not during Memorial Day, it's still apparent that there is still care taken to maintain this site, and the history it represents.
