everyone in L'warden knows De Walrus. Great location, huge terrace, and good food. Service is good, people watching is great. Perfect for either a beer/coffee or a meal. The salads are huge and well constructed, and come with fries! I can't speak to most of the menu (apart from fries and a few seafood specials I've had), but it all looks good (even if half the menu is hamburgers and bar food). Not 100% a "grand café" as it claims, but it will do. It's also one of the few places where an American credit card works with "tap" (iphone or card) no problem. read more

I really enjoyed de Walrus. de Walrus is located right down the street from our apartment, so naturally we had to check it out. Every time I walked past, they were bustling and I took that to be a good sign. I really liked that they had an English menu, even though it was not too difficult to figure out the Dutch one. I ordered the club sandwich and took in the atmosphere. The club sandwich is rather delicious. It is hard to mess up something so simple, but there was a spread on the sandwich that really set it apart. The other food ordered around the table was also very good and service was prompt and friendly. If in this part of Leeuwarden, I definitely recommend checking out de Walrus. read more

Being the top restaurant on the sites, i was looking forward to trying this restaurant but my experience was underwhelming. I had a new server that was still learning the ropes, but he was very nice and accommodating. Food was decent. My favorite part of the meal was the curry shrimp soup, it was so good. Unfortunately i ordered the hamburger because nothing else was calling me. Portions were massive - i couldnt even eat half my burger. The burger itself was so-so, french fries were crispy, and the side salad was tasty. I'm convinced that i just ordered the wrong menu items since this was so highly rated. Prices were ok, i'd give this another try if i came back to Leeuwarden. read more

De Walrus was really just a chance encounter, as we took a pit stop on our way down through the Netherlands. I'm so glad we did. It was a very welcoming atmosphere and the staff was helpful with both the menu and logging on to their free wi fi. But I digress; we ordered a clubsanwich and it was a good version of the classic. It came fast and fresh. We sat outside, where we could watch the foot traffic and smoke a cigarette. I give it a definite thumbs up. read more
