We told the host we were there for drinks, and she said she would have a table for us soon. A couple minutes later she sat us at a nice outdoor table and we started looking through the drink menu at the wide array of cocktails. A waiter then came over and told us that they weren't even serving cocktails until hours later that day. We were there specifically for drinks, and the staff new that. Why would they have the cocktail menus on each table when they are not serving them? They are known for their cocktails. This lack of communication makes no sense to me. To any staff member of Vavoom who is reading this, please make some changes for your future guests! If someone comes to Vavoom and asks to be seated at an hour where you are not serving cocktails, kindly let them know that you are not serving cocktails BEFORE they sit down and start choosing their cocktails. Also do not keep the cocktail menu on the tables when they are not being served. If normal drinks like wine and beers served during that time are on the same menu, then you need to have separate menus for them. The hours in which you do not serve cocktails should also clearly be stated on the website so that people like my sister and I don't make the trip there for nothing. If these issues are addressed, and the cocktails are delicious (I don't know because I never got to try them, but I'm sure they are good!) then I would give the place 5 stars . . . but this really needs to be addressed. On the final night of their Americana season, we saw the world-class David Olney and Sergio Webb perform here. Because the venue is fairly small, you get a very intimate experience, and they let us put some stools right by the side of the stage. The venue is decorated with all kinds of jazz and blues figurines and memorabilia, and it has a very comfortable (gezellig!) atmosphere. The place is sort of U-shaped, which allows them to fit in more people yet maintain the sense of intimacy. Something about the feeling of this venue really helped people loosen up, and everyone seemed to be having a blast. Much more relaxed atmosphere than when I saw David and Sergio at another venue two days later. Staff at the bar, ticket office, etc. was super friendly, and the concert was amazing. One of the best nights I've had in a long time! PS: Didn't take us too long to find parking nearby, but keep in mind that the machine doesn't accept coins and doesn't seem to take foreign cards. We ended up getting a ticket !!

Otherwise, their indoor spots are nestled in sensible and fun decor and served by congenial waiters. Adjacent is a little gallery of sorts and gift shop featuring new and affordable artists' works. Meander through the gallery and stop in for artistically styled bites (their empanadas and gazpacho were truly a delight) and inspired drinks (iced espresso with tonic!). It's our favorite spot to chill for a little inspiration in every sense of the word.

It was a 10-15 minute walk to my apartment, but I recommend it even if you have to bike further. They have live music most nights of the week, and even if they don't, it's still a great place to hang out. The drinks and food always hit the spot. When it was slow or empty, I always enjoyed the great company of the two oweners--Elaine and Nizam. And when it was busy, the locals were always fun and charming. Definitely a favorite spot in the evenings, I highly recommend and miss it!

Disappointing and Traumatic Experience!!…read more I had high hopes for a fun night out at Barlow Bar with my two friends (aged 49-65), and at first, everything was great. The atmosphere was vibrant, with happy people dancing, a good DJ, and lively music. The bar didn't offer table service, so we had to order our drinks at the bar, but the prices were reasonable. However, the night took a shocking and traumatic turn. In the middle of our evening, a security guard suddenly approached us at our table and asked me to grab my jacket and step outside. He then told my two friends to collect their belongings and leave as well--without giving any explanation. Once outside, he claimed that the owner had seen the "exit emergency door" open for a few minutes and blamed one of my friends for it. Yes, my friend had opened the door once, but only briefly for fresh air because it was extremely hot inside. However, we were not the only ones, other Dutch students had also opened the door throughout the night. Instead of addressing this issue with everyone, the security guard singled us out and removed us from the bar. Instead of handling the situation professionally, the owner never bothered to check the facts or even speak to us to ask if we are okay!!? He simply made a decision from afar and had us removed like criminals. No discussion, no fairness, no respect. Meanwhile, our other friends were still inside, completely unaware of what had just happened. If they have security cameras, they should check them--because I have never touched that door. This was a terrible and humiliating experience. We were unfairly targeted and treated with complete disregard. I will never return to Barlow Bar. Next time, we'll stick to Cloos, Mirell, and Margo, where the owners and staff treat their guests with kindness and respect.

When I opened the massive leather bound wine list, I was amazed. You can get lovely glasses of sauvignon blanc or pilot noir for €4. The rest of the wines are between 5-7 by the glass, with sparkling white wine for €4 as well. Bargain! They have loads of bottles at both everyday and special occasion prices. Someone has put a lot of money into the decor here, it feels very decadent and luxurious. You can also get charcuterie plates. The staff are very warm and friendly, even to scruffy types like myself. A real find among the overpriced Den Haag bars.
