My first (and up until recently, my only) taste of sugar cane juice came on the Caribbean island of Martinique in 1993. I really didn't like it. But 18 years on, I feel my palate was once again ready to be tested, and now I wish I'd found this place a long time ago! Unassumingly occupying a corner of the Dixon House food court in Haymarket, de juice sells honeysuckle tea (not tried that) and sugar cane juice. That's it. And you know the juice is fresh because they have a big machine that juices it for you - they feed the long sticks in and the juice comes out. Simple. They mix the sweet extract with either lime or lemon to take away from the sweetness and it works perfectly. Poured over ice, it tastes almost like very sweet milk (with a citrusy tang) and is sooooo moreish! Although you do have to remember you're basically drinking pure sugar so it's probably not the best for you (although apparently it does have certain health benefits). $4 for a large cup is definitely money well spent! read more
