The mortadella is the size of a child. Meats, cheeses, wine... The Prosecco is divine, the gorgonzola cheese surprisingly sweet and creamy. But ask a local person where to find Naneti's, and they will know, for this is Treviso's most famous Osteria. Here local delicacies abound on the shelves and counter. You can savour local wines along with the traditional local cicheti snacks, featuring bologna ham, fresh country sausage and ossocollo and selections of cold cuts and cheeses served on wooden cutting boards. Beppe and Fabio, the joint owners, immediately make everyone feel at home. They'll hand you morsels to taste and try if you're not sure what you want. The decor is hard to describe. No-one seems to know how old is Naneti's, but it houses some weird and wonderful food- and wine-related implements, a collection of ancient bottles, and the walls are pinned with newspaper cuttings and notices dating back to the 19th Century. The wines are arranged within reach around the walls. Just pick one and hand it over the counter to be opened. There's no seating - everyone just stands and talks - and the crowds overflow into the alleyway outside. You cannot fail to make friends here - I met Max, my closest Italian pal, here over a glass or two of Cabernet Franc. Customers drop in after work to buy produce and wine that will be their evening supper. They usually linger for a chat with friends. Go there!

We arrived at the restaurant as soon as it opened to be informed that without a reservation we couldn't be seated (there was no option to reserve online and no working US phones between my sister and I that could call-out) Despite this, the staff was kind enough to allow us to be seated on the terrace and provided us blankets to use as it was very chilly the evening we went and they weren't even seating people on the terrace for dinner service. I guess you could say we were the black sheeps of their dinner service that night :) Our pasta course and main meat entree course were both absolutely delicious. We started with the maccheroncini pasta with lamb ragu and mushrooms that was out of this world. Then we moved on to veal cheek that was served with a carrot puree and some type of celery based cream. All of the flavors when combined in one bite perfectly accented the veal (which was cooked to a tender perfection.) For dessert, upon our waiter's recommendation, we had the pistachio lava cake with homemade lavender ice cream which unfortunately ended an otherwise delicious meal on a flat note. Our waiter said he felt it was the most underrated dessert on the menu but I feel it's just the most undesirable. The hot pistachio lava center was just TOO much pistachio for me and the lavender ice cream left something to be lacking. Unless you just REALLY love pistachio take a pass.

Location is very nice, right at a pretty trendy canal, filled with lots of restaurants and bars. Right next to is an excellent gelato place. It's quite small inside with few tables, many just hang around outside - and why not, the location at the canale is a pretty spot. We did manage though to get some seats inside. Our Bulldog was very welcome here as well. The various cicchetti are presented at the counter. There are some classics of course, but also some very innovative creations. We went for the latter. There was gorgonzola with strawberry, radicchio with brie cheese, pesto topped with an anchovie and mushrooms, mashed fava beans with pulp and mashed fava with goats cheese and a cherry. All really wonderful combinations. Our favorite were the radicchio and the fava/goat cheese. Surely something to recreate back home. Staff was very friendly, we felt very welcome here. And instead of focussing on Aperol, Select and Prosecco, it's mostly about white and red wine here. And they have an excellent selection of wine. Not all cheap, but definitely worth the money. We especially loved the Pinot Nero "Terre di Giotto". A brillant cicchetti bar. Definitely a place we come back to next time in Venice.

One downside is how small the space is. Completely packed most of the time with only a few outdoor tables for seatings so be prepared to stand and eat.
