There's a very calm and laid back atmosphere making it perfect to sit in and unwind while enjoying your coffee (and perhaps a piece of brownie? Trust me, their brownies are amazing.) While ordering my coffee, I've chatted with the owner a few times and to simply put it, she's incredibly nice and welcoming. She doesn't mind having a little chat and seems genuinely interested. So to say that in the first month since opening I've darkened KoffieTenTje's door nearly a dozen times, I'm very impressed with their coffee. The interior is friendly, earthly and modern, and the music is always good (a mix of chilled electronica and folk). The vibe very much reminds me of a less busy Five Elephants (Berlin-based coffee heaven). Lastly I have to say something about the woman who owns it; basically she's lovely. Blackbird is situated in quite a small space but has lots to offer. Not only they brew good coffee but also sell art, 60-70s style furniture, t-shirts and vintage bicycles. It is one of the first espresso bars in Utrecht combining the possibility of drinking coffee with shopping. Blackbird uses Koffieslab beans which are nice but sometimes have a sour note (don't kill the messenger, it's a personal preference). Apart from coffee Blackbird has a small menu with breakfast, dessert and refreshing drinks options. Baked goodies are made from biological products and are quite ok, but unfortunately very inconsistent and definitely not the best in town. In my mind, the perfect cafe perfectly captures the "third place" concept - cozy enough to feel like home. I think the Dutch call that vibe - 'gezellig'.
