The thing I never really understand about Matalan is the need for cards. Why do they have them? It used to be that you had to have a card to buy anything, but on my more recent visit, I noticed they had slackened up on that, and it's now used for more of a rewards card than store ID. This store has everything; kids, women's and men's clothes, shoes and home ware. They have a brilliant underwear section and sell branded bras at less than half price. They even have Calvin Klein boxers at £9 a pack, which is less than half price, ideal for Xmas or Birthday pressies! I used the services that M Party provides for my 21st birthday party, and had cream and pink balloons with lovely little shimmery weights and bits and bobs for decorating the hall, all for under £100, which was amazing value! You have to collect the balloons yourself but that wasn't a problem. They have table decorations, age specific decorations and buffet ware, which is all fairly priced and available in every colour imaginable! They also make up banners if you want them, although I felt they were a bit pricey. Huge store with loads of bargains! The clothes in Matalan are getting nicer by the season, and I would highly recommend it for summer holiday clothes.

Hamilton

I have some really warm memories of Ink Spot from when i was a kid. It was always the place i…read morelooked forward to coming to when my mum and dad took me shopping to Hamilton. I loved crafty stuff and it sold some pretty cool toys too, like the Anne Geddes Babies i used to collect. It sits apart from the main cluster of shops and the shopping centre, on the way down to the big Asda. This place is an Aladdin's Cave of stationery. Need an HB pencil? Come here. A pink Filofax with kittens on it? Second shelf on the left madam. Biro that transforms into a deckchair? Yup, you'll find one here. But be warned , you'll pay for it! It really isn't cheap, so if you only need the basics i would suggest trying somewhere else first. However if you are a crafty connoisseur, or you're looking for something very specific, Ink Spot is the place for you! (Disclaimer: A transforming deckchair Biro does not yet exist. I made that bit up. So you may get a funny look if you ask for one here.)

So I must confess - I have a bit of a stationery fetish. Nothing quite like the smell of a freshly…read moresharpened pencil or like rows of coloured pencils lined up by shade (yes yes I did and still do crave the entire set of crayola colours!!!) Anyway, this place has so many cool art supplies that even the most non-artistic, non-creative person in the world will be compelled to purchase some funky craft paper or some random modelling clay or engineering grade pencil. School projects and Brownie badge work has been aided with supplies from here and I can never resist popping in when I have a minute and I am nearby. They have, in the past few years, got a range of fancy dress costumes as well - so they are branching out somewhat from merely traditional stationery supplies. I don't know if that is a direction I am really loving, but in this economy, anything that helps local independent businesses is fine by me. This place is NOT cheap though and is its main failing. I would seriously doubt if art students would actually buy their supplies from here, If the prices were a little bit lower and the staff didn't look at you as if you were about to shop lift then I would love it even more. It is definitely a stationers as opposed to a full on specialist art store I reckon. As an art shop for true artists (although clearly I am not, and am just surmising, I would definitely give it a 3. As a place to find cool knick knacks, gifts and pens with a good motion (see told you I was obsessed!) then possibly a 4. On the whole it is a pretty shop with lots of lovely goodies and some luxurious stationery. With slightly lower prices this would be a 4 overall, bit as it stands a solid 3!

Uddingston

Wow, wow, wow! Now,…read morebefore my boyfriend breaks out in a cold sweat and starts shuffling his way to the door, I haven't actually had personal experience of this store, but it offers such a unique and lovely service that I felt i should share it with all you Yelpers who are about to tie the knot for real! It is an unassuming wee place on Uddingston Main Street, which isn't exactly the most glam of places for a couture stockists of gowns made by designers such as La Sposa; but they do say you find diamonds in the rough, and this is certainly a diamond. The shop is not open to the public, instead, only available by appointment, which makes it extra special. It's unusual for them to book more than the one bride in at a time, because they value making the experience at the boutique special and unique, just like the dresses. As well as the dresses (some of which you can see from the street through the windows) they also stock shoes and veils, and bridesmaid dresses, which means you could get all the female bridal party kitted out in the one shop! Judging by the website, the dresses are elegant and magical, perfect for that once in a lifetime special day.

She bought both her wedding dress (over £3000) and 4 bridesmaids dresses (over £1000) from the salon and when they arrived in store the length of two of the bridesmaids dresses was too short. Victoria argued that she had asked us about length, to which we apparently told her we would be wearing flat shoes (funny how the other two dresses were the right length). It is blatantly untrue. She gave no leeway and forced my Mum to pay for extra fittings and extra fabric to make the dresses an inch longer (still not long enough). She is also incredibly inflexible with fitting times, considering two of the bridesmaids live in Manchester and are at work/college, she would barely stretch past a Thursday evening. Victoria's cold and uncompromising emails left my Mum not wanting to go back into the shop to pick up the dresses so I had to do it. When it got to putting them on, one of the bridesmaids dresses didn't fit correctly and on the other the belt was way too big. It is absolutely shocking that due to a mistake made by the staff at the Etiquette Salon we were left paying even more for fabric and fittings when it was a mistake made by Victoria. She was unhelpful and ambivalent and knew she could charge us what she liked for the service. I would thoroughly discourage anyone from going to this store. I am also going through the process of getting a wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses and I know what special service should feel like. This isn't it.

I was later told by the dress fitter at the bridal shop I bought my dress from that this is nonsense and loads of dresses would just not sit right if altered too dramatically. The changing rooms are small and cramped and I had about 5 children peeping through the curtains at me while I was trying on dresses. Not really appropriate for a shop to allow children to run riot when people are trying to try on wedding dresses. For one of the most important days of your life this place seems a bit amateurish to deal with.
