They were the people I dealt with the entire time I lived in Harborne and always sorted out any issues we had with the house. Recently, a friend of ours was moving to Birmingham and wanted to live on the Bearwood side of Harborne in order to be close to her new job. Douglas Estates were brilliant and, even though our friend was at this time still out of town, arranged viewings for us and sorted everything out. Very good indeed.

The Argent Centre in the Jewellery Quarter is an amazing building. I used to love walking past this…read moreevery day on my way to work. It was built as a factory/ workshop set-up during Birmingham's Victorian industrial boom - and still functions as a collection of workshops today: built around an open courtyard. So, despite looking solid and enormous it's quite a hollow building - a series of narrow workshop corridors with open space in the middle. The brickwork is reminiscent of Italian renaissance churches, but without being too fussy - not really suitable for, essentially, an industrial workplace. Personally, I think it's a beautiful building, with enough design to be aethetically and historically appealing, but not too elaborate or imposing. It's also great that it's been Grade II listed and still functions as workshops and office space for small firms. It also houses the Pen Room Museum.

It was only on the Jewellery Quarter tour with Midlands Discover that we stopped to learn about it and even in the rain, it was impressive. The front of the building is thankfully Grade 2 listed and despite it looking like a big square is actually full of long, workshop spaces, as originally designed. Then it was for pen manufacturer, now however, there is a bit modern addition so there are plenty of office spaces and this has got to be a great place to work. This is also a great place if you are new in business and don't want to commit to long term leases on huge workshops; perfect for the creative jewellery quarter.

I used to like moving around to different properties and places. I went to The University of Sussex…read morein Brighton and had a terrible time with letting agents. I never got a deposit back and once had to cough up 500 quid for a gas/electric bill because my old flat mates had all moved back to continental Europe. Then I moved to Edinburgh where the properties were very old and most of them were infested with mice. The lettings agent never told me about this and when I called him to get an exterminator in he told me to go buy a cat. I explained that I had one already but he was too lazy to catch mice, so he suggested I bought another. I lived in a studio flat at the time, no room for a duo. I digress. I have had bad experiences with letting agents in the past but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Chamberlains Estates offered me a wide range of properties to view and the sales team were honest and open with me about any pro's and con's I may encounter. The fees were the standard 100 pounds agency fee alongside one moths rent and bond. Moving flats is not a cheap practice, one that I do a lot less often than I used to. Stability is the way forward and Chamberlains listened to what I wanted. The only criticism is that after I moved in they seemed a little less interested in what I wanted from a letting agent. I was palmed off to a landlord that could barely speak English. Other than that I found Chamberlains to be quite useful and I would happily recommend them to a friend or colleague.
