Before you even think about coming here...go for a run or...I don't know...stop eating for a few…read moredays, you will soon find out why. I once called in just to get a quiche which is ridiculous because that's probably the last thing this business is known for (it was amazing for your information), and walked out with 3 slices of cake, 3 Banoffe pies and 4 tarts. I took half of them home and the other half to Uni with me and before I could even explain to everyone what they were, they were gone. The Welsh Lady is a deceptive temptress who lures you in with her unassuming shop front, tucked away in Rosalie and STEALS YOUR WALLET AND YOUR WAISTLINE! Eventually returning both, one thinner, the other thicker (I'll let you guess which is which). Everything they bake here makes you want to quit life and die from a decadent, gluttonous overdose of sugary wonderment. Specializing in cakes to order they have everything you can imagine and more. Words can't do this place justice, so if you are wanting the perfect wedding or birthday cake, or simply just something sweet for any type of celebration The Welsh Lady should be your first port of call. P.S The Banoffe pies are out of this world, go now and get yourself one before they are deemed illegal.

I can divide everyone I know into two categories: those who like chocolate cake and those who like…read moreplain vanilla cake. Personally, I fall into the vanilla cake category but the Welsh Lady is the only cake shop that has the ability to make me question my allegiance to Team Vanilla. If you're a fan of chocolate cake, the muddier, richer, and more decadent the better, then the Welsh Lady is your holy grail. Her deep, dark mud cakes are so moist and dense that it's almost like she's mixed dark chocolate mousse into the batter. Most of my friends fall into Team Chocolate and I've become very used to being served a piece of chocolate birthday cake at parties and leaving it on the plate half finished. A couple of years ago at a dear friend's 21st I watched the cake be presented with a flourish. Chocolate again, I thought. I had to admit that it was a beautiful looking cake, covered in huge, elaborate chocolate curls and sprouting sparkly butterflies and stars on silver stems but I didn't expect my tastebuds to enjoy it as much as my eyes were. After one bite of the cake I knew there'd be no half-eaten leftovers on my plate this time. Through a mouthful of mud cake I demanded to know where my friend had gotten such a cake. 'MULSH NADY' she replied, her mouth was just as full as mine. 'Huh?'. She swallowed her chocolate-y mouthful and said 'Welsh Lady'. I nodded, swallowed, and went back for seconds.

You know you're onto something good when with your first taste you're transported back to a time…read morelong ago, when you were 5 and with your Dad... Firstly, I want to talk about clean. The floors are so clean I would eat off them. Every surface is clean, the staff wear hairnets and gloves and this is so refreshing compared to other places in this area! They have an amazing range of both sweet and savory and very good prices. A great range of freshly baked bread and for Easter hot cross buns bigger than your hand!! The sausage roll was home made, fresh, tasty, not filled with fillers. I could taste the meat and it is not too heavily spiced that it tastes salty. The pastry was flaky, but not especially so that I ended up with more on me than in my mouth!!! The bee sting was fresh, real cream and custard. OMG.... this was just pure food pleasure!!! Not so sweet that you feel overwhelmed, and the pastry had just the right amount of resistance to not be tough, but not fall apart at the first bite either. The jam donut was like how grandad used to make at his bakery. The jam was sticky, sweet, but also tart. It is made with fresh fruit as there are still a few seeds in it, so not overly processed or over sugared!! The pastry part was soft, and delicious and left me wanting more!! We got a mocha and it was well made and delicious, served in a mug, just the way we like it!!! My malted milk was the sip that took me back to a 5yo child. I was on the jetty at Redcliffe with my Dad who has been passed for 10 years now, and we are drinking malted milks. Any food that can illicit such a vivid and special memory is amazing and rare. Thank you for this memory. We will be back!!

Sorry, Carrara locals, but the jig is up. I know your secret, and your secret is Maurita, located…read morein the Carrara Food Fair (Coco's). It's preposterous how cheap you guys get some killer basic Italian nosh! Absolutely ludicrous! Coffee and cake for only $2.80? Okay, so I'm too afraid to try the coffee. But it's not like I come to Maurita every single time I am down the coast for the coffee... It's the cannoli. A mere $3 each shell, with fillings of vanilla custard, chocolate custard, or--my personal favourite--ricotta and fresh cream, otherwise known as cannoli Sicilliani. Be still, my beating heart. Ever since the guy at work who lives down on the GC brought in a whole jenga stack of cannoli for us office drones, I have been a fan. For my birthday at work earlier this year, my only request was "CANNOLI, PLEASE". Any time I've had to do a work favour for this guy, I've asked for payment in cannoli. And then, earlier this year, I was down on the GC for a day, and I realised... I could have it all. I could have my cannoli and eat it, too. I could visit Cannolo Mecca. The work guy coughed up the name and address and it was immediately added to my itinerary. It wasn't until I got to Maurita that I discovered it's got a lot more going on than just cannoli, though if they wanted to close down everything else there and just focus on cannoli, I'd still be okay with it. I'm not sure the locals would agree, though, because the couple of times I've been there myself now, it's been swamped with people at the small, cramped seating areas both inside and outside, stuffing their faces with as much savoury as sweet. $3 bruschetta, $4 pizzas, $4.50 salad rolls, $5 focaccias, $5 lasagna with salad & crusty bread... this is getting out of hand. What about global inflation!? Look, my only problem with writing this review is that now I really want some more cannoli and I'm not sure when I'll be able to get my next fix. Better go see if that guy at work needs any favours.
