It has taken me over three years to find the strength to write this review…read more After my mother passed away, I was told where she was being held. Having previously experienced the compassion and humanity shown by funeral professionals in Indiana, I believed I would be allowed a brief, private moment to see my mother and say goodbye. Instead, when I contacted Brown Funeral Home, I was told that my sister had paid for the least expensive cremation option and that I could come to identify my mother's body for 20 minutes at a cost of $385. I was also told that the funeral home would need to contact the Power of Attorney for permission. I specifically asked that the Power of Attorney not be contacted because of the circumstances surrounding my mother's care and death. Despite that request, the Power of Attorney was contacted. I was subsequently told that I could view my mother's body, but that it would be classified as an "identification," limited to 20 minutes, and would cost $385. For me, this was not simply a business transaction. This was my mother. I was grieving and wanted the opportunity to see her, say goodbye, and have a moment of closure. Being told that this opportunity would cost $385 and require permission from another person was devastating. What has stayed with me for more than three years is not simply the cost. It was the lack of compassion I experienced during one of the most painful moments of my life. Families deserve dignity, compassion, and humanity when they are saying goodbye to someone they love. My experience with Brown Funeral Home did not feel that way, and it is an experience I will never forget.

This is an annual Remembrance Service that takes place at the year's closing during Christmas. Louis DeSouza, the manager of the funeral home gave an introductory talk and introduced his staff. It was nice to see a manager acknowledging and praising his hard working staff. Pastor Hal Jeffery had some very comforting and encouraging words that reminded us that our departed loved ones would want us to carry on with life, celebrate it and enjoy it. The staff presented each of us with a beautiful glass angel ornament with our loved one's name. Some placed them on the tree at the funeral home while some took it home to put on their own trees. Pastor Hal then made a blessing of the tree. Lunch and refreshments followed. Thank you to the staff at SCC Funeral Home for helping ease the pain and providing comfort through such a difficult time of the holidays. The ceremony was truly uplifting.

Because of this mistake, I did not receive his ashes and lost the opportunity to place them in the ocean with my mother, who passed away from cancer five months ago. What makes this worse is the lack of follow-up and compassion. I called to ask where his ashes were placed looking for some closure because I have heard that sometimes the communal ashes are put in a garden or the ocean. I never even received a return call. Mistakes can happen. But accountability, communication, and empathy matter -- especially when families are grieving. Unfortunately, those were missing here. I hope no other family has to experience this additional heartbreak during an already devastating time.
