Review Highlights - David Gray Park - Off Leash Enclosure

I must say though, your dogs will get dirty as the mulch is old, and the dogs do play around with each other.

I also found it to be very clean with no dog poop or cigarette butts on the ground. Like all off leash parks there was a garbage can at the entrance. Kudos to whoever thought of this place to put a park.

Review #700 is going to be all about the dog. My wacky, spazzy dog cannot be let off the leash…read morearound other dogs, but she loves to chase her tennis balls. This dog park has a few drawbacks for people with normal and well-adjusted pets: it's in the middle of a traffic interchange for the Queensborough Bridge, is mostly a big gravel hill, and requires crossing a footbridge to get there. Unfortunately for people in the neighbourhood, this replaced what was previously a more pleasant park, which was razed when they redesigned and rebuilt the roads and on-ramps to the bridge a few years ago, and threw the off-leash area into the middle. Now, most other people seem to avoid this dog park. Fortunately for me and my furry problem child, I can usually have the place to myself for a while to give her a good workout. In addition, there is only one entrance gate, which makes it easy for me to keep an eye out for anyone who does come along and wants to use the park; I always leash the dog and give way to the other person when that happens. (In a perfect world, I wouldn't have to do this, but despite whatever her early socialization was, this dog needs to run regularly, so we do the best we can with what we've got to work with.) The gravel and chain link fence and poop mines make the place frankly look a little ghetto-barren. The tiny trees don't throw much shade in the summer, but there are a couple of benches and a water tap (turned off in winter). I also love that from the top of the hill, you get a panoramic view of the Fraser River and bridges and clouds. And as for the traffic, every so often my dog likes to run along the fence to chase the cars and trucks. Hey, whatever burns off the energy. My very favourite part of this weird, ugly, unloved dog park? The happy panting in the backseat on the way home.

Warner Loat is a pretty good dog park along the Winston slip. This park can be a muddy one so if you don't mind a dirty dog then bring your pooch here any time. It is never too busy and all of the dogs that I have seen here have been quite friendly with wonderful owners whom don't mind my crazy wire fox terrier hip checking their big dogs and barking at them in hopes for a chase. The little dog loves the days that I allow for him to go on a muddy day and whip around the park in the mud. Loves it until we get home and he has to have a bath.

Anyway, it's a messy place for your dog(s) to have tons of off-leash fun in a safely-fenced and legal area, and it's no more muddy than the on-leash areas nearby, such as the trail around Burnaby Lake itself. It is also equally subject to mosquitoes in warm weather. Bring a large bottle of repellant, or else get eaten alive in 3 minutes or less. Don't say you weren't warned ... There is a decent-sized parking lot immediately adjacent to the southern entrance gate, which is very convenient if you are bringing dog(s) by car.

Kingsway, the main drag leading into Vancouver proper, witnesses more than its share of traffic, as do the various side streets. So it's a testament to the vision of the founders of the town that this oasis exists. While one can occasionally hear the hum of the Metro or the nearby avenues, by and large it's a place to quickly and efficiently get away from it all. If walking and nature viewing don't fully complete your needs, there are plenty of more physical activities to partake in or watch others partake in - the stadium, the pool, the golf course, the picnic tables - you name it, Central Park has it.

There is a 2.5-kilometer outdoor fitness circuit with 12 stations designed for cardio, strength, balance, and flexibility. Tennis courts can use some upgrading or expansion though. Lots of space for picnics and some are under covered spaces. Summer is usually occupied by church groups. There's an area where people have their RC boats in the pond. Not sure if the ducks are annoyed by them or not. This park has almost everything.
