Had such a lovely time visiting the new David Geffen Galleries at LACMA, and really enjoyed the artwork, the space, and the experience of seeing this beautiful new addition to Los Angeles. There is so much to take in, and it's a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. It's such an eclectic collection. I think my favorite surprise was the iconic Avanti car on display in the middle of the galleries.
If I had one criticism, it would be that I wish the building felt a little less industrial and a bit warmer. The original design actually mirrored the tar pits and the terrain from the top and was more organic and blended in more with the area. I know changes had to be made to Peter Zumthor's original design, and understand that the final result is not necessarily what was first envisioned. Still, it's a fabulous space, and am so glad to have it here in LA.
Spectacular place when you drive by on Wilshire as you drive underneath part of the museum. It's definitely a gorgeous structure. The overpass seems to integrate the galleries into the LA landscape of endless roads. It's also a nice contrast to the permanent "Urban Light" streetlights sculpture that's close by.
It is a must see for any museum lover visiting Los Angeles, especially now that the Museum at La Brea Tar Pits next door is closed for a major multi year renovation and construction through 2028.
This is somewhere I would definitely take art appreciative friends and family visiting from out of town. And don't make the mistake of seeing only the new galleries! The rest of LACMA is extraordinary and absolutely deserves a visit as well.
All in all, am thrilled that we have this new addition to our city. It's not perfect, but it's special, the art is wonderful, and it's definitely worth seeing. Already looking forward to going back and spending more time with the art. read more
