It was still super early, about 4:30 in the morning, but I could already smell fresh bread on the…read moreway to our check-in counter. I ran downstairs to pick up a snack before we got moving and was so, SO happy to see that they had mett (minced raw pork that is popular in Germany)!
After having my first mett sandwich at Dat Backhus, I was craving another one before leaving Germany. I stood in line, as it was pretty busy, and ordered one to-go. I didn't realize I had to ask for onions here (I just assumed it came with them), so I had to get back in line to get some, and was a bit of a pain to explain what I wanted since the woman at the counter spoke very little English.
It was different, in a good way, than the one I had at Dat Backhus - this one was open-faced with one piece of toasted fresh bread instead of two, just plain mett, and raw, chopped white onions on top, no mayo (you could add salt or pepper yourself later). The bread was freshly baked, since they only opened at 4am, and perfectly toasted on the outside.
It completely hit the spot! I thought maybe I was just super excited like I usually get with food, but turns out everyone else was loving it, too, since it was flying out of the refrigerated display case, and they refilled it at least once or twice within the 10 minutes I was there. Raw pork + raw onions is probably the worst morning breath ever, but oh well - worth it!
