It was really good. Lived in town for 39 years and just have never made it here. Step back in time with this place. I feel like it hasn't been updated since 1981 which is most of its charm. Service was prompt and thorough. Place was clean on the inside. Staff was friendly. Good was surprisingly good. There isn't another spot around like this one. It's a fun spot if you want something unique and different. read more

Stepping into Das Steinhaus feels like time-traveling to a 1970s Bavarian lodge and honestly, I respect the commitment. Came here with coworkers while in town for work, and the throwback atmosphere was half the charm. Started with the escargot..decent, but could've used way more garlic! I went with the sampler entrée because I couldn't commit to one thing! It was okay, though I wish I could've picked my own sides, like Spätzle which was missing. Service was friendly and fast. Not a must-visit, but not a bad stop either, especially if you like your schnitzel with a side of nostalgia. read more

Das Steinhaus - Weiner Schnitzel - German Near Me - Jefferson City, Missouri

It was a well appointed German restaurant that had delicious food. The prices are a little on the high side, but I thought the service and flavor was delicious. I had the Jager schnitzel and it was very nice. The Saturday night karaoke was the best part and it was such a fun evening with a great cast of characters. I will be back for sure. read more

On a cross country trip through the middle of the country, we had to zip through Jefferson City to see the beautiful state capital of Missouri. Hunger was on everyone's mind. What to eat? Lo and behold there is a German pub in this town! This is an uncommon find! The gracious proprietor, Helmut, took the time to seat us outside on a patio where a glorious late spring evening was taking place. A little beer and a little wine set the mood. The entrées were extremely hearty, in a traditional German style. There was live music inside the pub area, but we just wanted a quiet evening after having sat driving in the car all day. The restaurant is much larger inside than it appears from the outside. It is a somewhat dated decor, but it evokes the feeling of an old-school German restaurant style. And that is a wonderful thing, actually. Helmut came out after dinner to give us all a shot glass of a delicious Amsterdam aperitif liqueur. Gawd, it was good! My German language language skills are limited, but there is a word to describe this type of restaurant and its mood. " Gemutlichkeit" - warmth, friendliness and good cheer. DO eat here!! read more

I have no idea how this business is still in operation. The food is medium too bad at best. The quality is horrible and the prices are extreme for what you get. I guess if you really like German food, this is the only option that serves some of those dishes at very extreme prices, but very low quality. For the most part of the services bad and there's not a lot redeeming in the atmosphere the location hasn't been cleaned or updated in 50 years. read more

Stopped in for dinner tonight. I had the German Sampler and my wife had the Jager Schnitzel. Both were most excellent. We also had the Desire Piesporter Reisling. I highly recommend, a great wine. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the fantastic job that Jeanine did. What a delight. Professional and friendly. I totally recommend. Also say hello to Helmutt if you stop in. read more

Although the restaurant decor is very dated. The exceptional food was well worth it. Every bite was amazing and just thinking about it makes me hungry. It's a great go to. It is also a slightly hidden so it isn't ever run with customers. My original thought our server was gruff but she became super nice and fun. Listen her suggestions. Plus the friendly shot at the end awesome read more

I lived in Germany for 2 1/2 years, so my expectations are pretty high. They were met and exceeded. Helmut the owner gave me the full tour and Lori was sure to keep my stein full of authentic German Hofbrau lager. The place was very welcoming and everyone was just like family. I had the Wiener Schnitzel and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked just right. Very creamy and buttery. The cabbage (rot kohl) was sweet and tangy, everything was very good. A basket of bread was presented with butter to smear on top. I highly recommend this place. Food, friends, and authentic German Gemutlichkeit. read more

We were recently part of a small event here. This place is huge compared to what it looks like from outside. The staff and the owner, Helmut are great people. They made all of us feel at home. The entire experience was wonderful and I have to say that they have both food and service on lockdown. I will definitely be back. read more

Ambiance, food, and service were unique and really good! This place is one of a kind. Very comfortable and a throwback to the old days.

Well, where to start. The outside ain't much to look at but the car count was high and my friend who lives in JC said to meet him here so I arrived just before he did around 6:30. I walked in the door, and the Bar crowd fell silent. Maybe it was because I was wearing a mask (what with COVID and all.) Most of the patrons were not and perhaps they knew I was not a regular. No one said hello, no server greeted me, the crowd started talking again so I sat down hoping I wouldn't get into a donnybrook-given that it was St. Patty's day. The friends arrived, we made our way back through a maze of halls and curtains. The decor is part Oma's haus, part gaudy gangster and part-I'm not sure what. We strolled past a table of large dudes drinking shots with what we would learn later was the owner. The bartender who seated us provided some nice banter and took our order. The food was authentic and flavorful. I had pork chops, potatoes and sauerkraut. According to the other Yelpers they verify that the food is authentic-I'm not a German food expert so can't vouch-but it was different and a nice change of pace. We walked back through the bar, the Karaoke has fired up and the crowd was a bit larger. Also-noticed a guy at the bar holding a baby goat. Never seen that before. Outside, the smokers had gathered and were chatting and laughing. Das appears to be a locals spot, and if you're into karaoke and German food you might check it out. And..look for they baby goat. read more

Service was great. Food was good. Unique atmosphere. I would recommend it! You won't regret giving this place a try.

Looked at website and yelp posted hours for Sunday. Arrived at 5 pm, three cars in the lot, waited till 5:15, no one inside, no employees were seen. 5 cars in the lot when we all left. If you are not going to be open say so. read more

Stopped here while traveling , food was pretty good decor seemed a little dated and could use some updating. It was a little loud because the restaurant and bar/karaoke/dance hall, kind of flowed over into the main restaurant area. read more

Stopped in after reading the reviews during a day of driving from Texas. Delicious Weiner schnitzel, Beef Roulade, German wine and also a slice of Black Forest Cake. Great waitress, clean, comfortable and not crowded (was storming). Ended with a shot of orange liquor from the owner (thank you!). I'd have given 5 stars but for the music. We love country music, but thought it took away from the German vibe. Definitely would return! read more

The food here is truly authentic. The owner is from Germany & really knows his menu. Being locals, we have been here many times & have had the pleasure of Helmut (the owner) coming to our table to visit & bringing us complementary shots! I love the fried potatoes. The only negative is the decor; they haven't updated in years & don't change their seasonal decorations. read more

This restaurant is a gem. Possibly the best food I have ever eaten. The Touch of Germany was wonderful. 3 different styles of meat, sauerbraten is spiced pickled beef, a tasty pork roast with bearnaise sauce, and a beef roast with mushroom gravy. The red cabbage was tangy and well spiced. Last but definitely not least, the fried potatoes were excellent. Thank you everyone at Das Steinhouse for a great meal. I can't wait to go back and try everything else. The service was also outstanding. read more

They are short staffed, waitress is over worked & trying her best. Most of 5he patrons were "silver hair". Salad comes with an odd house dressing. Steak was soooo salty & over seasoned. I did not eat it, the pic is what I left. Waitress said she took 20% off but it was only 10%. I don't know how or why this place had so many good reviews??? The lounge feels like 60+ swingers club with decor ordered from wish, and the music is 80s soft core porn sound tracks. The restaurant looks like your grandma's couch in the 80s. read more

Kitschy environment with good food and service. A bit overpriced but worth a stop if only once. I think when the elderly karaoke started we knew we were in a unique place. Everyone was very sweet and attentive. Service was great. Food was slow, but we enjoyed the pace. Food was very good. Escargot was excellent. They had a great wine selection. Main course was a sampler and very good. Excellent red cabbage. Wife had a seafood crepe, it was a bit heavy and gloppy, not what comes to mind when you think crepe. The food was heavy though, it's German! It sticks to your ribs. Couldn't eat dessert. Too full. The meal cost $80 pre-tip. A bit pricey. read more

Was in town for the night staying close by at the Holiday in and thought this would be the cutest place for a beer and some dinner. Met up with some work friends and the decor is super cute, very German bier garden style, slightly dated and worn down but fun none the less. The staff was super cute but she was a little overwhelmed with the regulars. We ordered some beer that she recommended and it was great- the menu was classic and the food was excellent! I am taking stats away for the loud country music that was not at all on theme of the quiet space and made it really hard to talk, and the long wait time between drink orders, food and bill. It was a three hour ordeal. The food ALONE is 5 star traditional German style all the way! I am glad that we went, it was a nice dinner and time with friends, I just wish we had been able to talk a little more over the music, and we hadn't had to wait so long to get our bill. read more

My first visit to Das Steinhaus was about 15 years ago, when a bunch of folks from work took me out to dinner here. I helped order the wine for the table; and, we had a fantastic time. Since then, I've made it a point to visit Das Steinhaus any time I return to Jefferson City. On my prior visit, I showed up before the restaurant opened (my stomach was still on Eastern Time); and, just ordered a supper to-go. On this visit, I showed up right at 5 with hopes for dining in the main restaurant; but, found out only the lounge would be open. I took a seat; and, was greeted by the bartender, presented with a menu; and, offered a drink. I wasn't sure what wine I wanted, so I said I'd look over the menu. The owner came out and greeted me; welcoming me back after I told him of my long-time relationship with his restaurant. He told me of the specials; and, took my order promising bread service, which came out promptly. I ended up with an excellent draft beer (Haufbrau) and the German Sampler platter. Everything was delicious, especially the beef roll (roulade.). It was just like the ones my mother used to make, in flavor (heavy bay leaves) and texture (fork tender.). The regular bartender came in and introduced herself as Sarah. She checked on me a few times; and, took care of the patrons at the bar (a vibrant local scene.) Toward the end of my meal, she turned on the music; and, turned off the TV, which made for better atmosphere. For the exceptional cuisine, I was pleased with the bill; and, vowed to return. read more

This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Jefferson City. Delicious German food, eclectic atmosphere, wonderful staff and a charismatic owner. The Wiener schnitzel is absolutely delicious, as are the meatballs bordelaise. We've also tried the beef rouladen and the filet steak al a Diana and both were great. Their Black Forest cake has become my fiancé's favorite dessert anywhere. The food is a bit pricey, but portions are large and it's a splurge that you won't regret! read more

We're from out of town, stopped in on a whim not really knowing what to expect. We had the greatest meal, possibly ever. My husband had the sampler and I had the schnitzel, and everything was outstanding. We also got Black Forest cake to go because we were so full. The owner is an absolute doll, the staff is friendly and you really feel like you're family. We didn't really care about the music or the decor, we were there to eat. If you're there to eat, you will not be disappointed. I'm so sad we don't live closer! read more

Absolutely amazing food and service. My business partner and I both each had the German sampler and shared a bottle of Cab. My friend and I were looking for lunch and Das Steinhaus was recommended by a friend. So we headed over for lunch. They were closed but a man came out from a side kitchen door and said they didn't open till 4 but if we wanted he would fix us a quick snack and we could have a few beers. The man is Helmut the owner. He gave us a beer a quick tour and a snack. We talk with him a few hours. We left and later that day returned for dinner. A great restaurant with a wonderful owner. The German sampler plate is outstanding. I will go out of my way to revisit Das Steinhaus and have a beer with Helmut. read more

Food varies a bit, but generally very good. Same for the service; recommend calling ahead - they've been odd about reservations even when it's not busy, perhaps for staffing reasons. The ambience is a bit stuck in the past, but not distractingly so. , read more

Das Steinhaus is an amazing little German restaurant. Helmet the owner is very nice and the food was good. This place has AMAZING, old school, authentic German food--and an admirable beer and wine list! We make it a point to sample German restaurants in the US, wherever we go, and this one is way up there on the list, in food quality. Their recommended Malbec selection was delightful and we had a great experience overall. Highly recommended. read more

In my recent tip to Jefferson City I ate at Das Steinhaus for dinner every night. ....It was that that good. Fantastic food, unique location, & good prices. I even meet other business travelers staying at the same hotel as I dinning there and they raved about it as well. It is a gem of a Resturant that should not be missed.
