I went with the sampler entrée because I couldn't commit to one thing!It was okay, though I wish I could've picked my own sides, like Spätzle which was missing. Service was friendly and fast. On a cross country trip through the middle of the country, we had to zip through Jefferson City to see the beautiful state capital of Missouri. Hunger was on everyone's mind. What to eat? Lo and behold there is a German pub in this town! This is an uncommon find! The gracious proprietor, Helmut, took the time to seat us outside on a patio where a glorious late spring evening was taking place. A little beer and a little wine set the mood. The entrées were extremely hearty, in a traditional German style. There was live music inside the pub area, but we just wanted a quiet evening after having sat driving in the car all day. The restaurant is much larger inside than it appears from the outside. It is a somewhat dated decor, but it evokes the feeling of an old-school German restaurant style. And that is a wonderful thing, actually. Helmut came out after dinner to give us all a shot glass of a delicious Amsterdam aperitif liqueur. Gawd, it was good! My German language language skills are limited, but there is a word to describe this type of restaurant and its mood. " Gemutlichkeit" - warmth, friendliness and good cheer. DO eat here!! read more

I have no idea how this business is still in operation. The food is medium too bad at best. The quality is horrible and the prices are extreme for what you get. I guess if you really like German food, this is the only option that serves some of those dishes at very extreme prices, but very low quality. For the most part of the services bad and there's not a lot redeeming in the atmosphere the location hasn't been cleaned or updated in 50 years. read more

Although the restaurant decor is very dated. The exceptional food was well worth it. Every bite was amazing and just thinking about it makes me hungry. It's a great go to. I lived in Germany for 2 1/2 years, so my expectations are pretty high. They were met and exceeded. Helmut the owner gave me the full tour and Lori was sure to keep my stein full of authentic German Hofbrau lager. The place was very welcoming and everyone was just like family. I had the Wiener Schnitzel and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked just right. Very creamy and buttery. The cabbage (rot kohl) was sweet and tangy, everything was very good. Well, where to start. The outside ain't much to look at but the car count was high and my friend who lives in JC said to meet him here so I arrived just before he did around 6:30. I walked in the door, and the Bar crowd fell silent. Maybe it was because I was wearing a mask (what with COVID and all.) Most of the patrons were not and perhaps they knew I was not a regular. No one said hello, no server greeted me, the crowd started talking again so I sat down hoping I wouldn't get into a donnybrook-given that it was St. Patty's day. The friends arrived, we made our way back through a maze of halls and curtains. The decor is part Oma's haus, part gaudy gangster and part-I'm not sure what. We strolled past a table of large dudes drinking shots with what we would learn later was the owner. The bartender who seated us provided some nice banter and took our order. The food was authentic and flavorful. I had pork chops, potatoes and sauerkraut. According to the other Yelpers they verify that the food is authentic-I'm not a German food expert so can't vouch-but it was different and a nice change of pace. We walked back through the bar, the Karaoke has fired up and the crowd was a bit larger. Also-noticed a guy at the bar holding a baby goat. Never seen that before. Outside, the smokers had gathered and were chatting and laughing. Das appears to be a locals spot, and if you're into karaoke and German food you might check it out. Stopped in after reading the reviews during a day of driving from Texas. Delicious Weiner schnitzel, Beef Roulade, German wine and also a slice of Black Forest Cake. Great waitress, clean, comfortable and not crowded (was storming). Ended with a shot of orange liquor from the owner (thank you!). I'd have given 5 stars but for the music. This restaurant is a gem. Possibly the best food I have ever eaten. The Touch of Germany was wonderful. 3 different styles of meat, sauerbraten is spiced pickled beef, a tasty pork roast with bearnaise sauce, and a beef roast with mushroom gravy. Kitschy environment with good food and service. A bit overpriced but worth a stop if only once. I think when the elderly karaoke started we knew we were in a unique place. Everyone was very sweet and attentive. Service was great. Food was slow, but we enjoyed the pace. Food was very good. Escargot was excellent. They had a great wine selection. Main course was a sampler and very good. Excellent red cabbage. Wife had a seafood crepe, it was a bit heavy and gloppy, not what comes to mind when you think crepe. Was in town for the night staying close by at the Holiday in and thought this would be the cutest place for a beer and some dinner. Met up with some work friends and the decor is super cute, very German bier garden style, slightly dated and worn down but fun none the less. The staff was super cute but she was a little overwhelmed with the regulars. We ordered some beer that she recommended and it was great- the menu was classic and the food was excellent! I am taking stats away for the loud country music that was not at all on theme of the quiet space and made it really hard to talk, and the long wait time between drink orders, food and bill. It was a three hour ordeal. The food ALONE is 5 star traditional German style all the way! I am glad that we went, it was a nice dinner and time with friends, I just wish we had been able to talk a little more over the music, and we hadn't had to wait so long to get our bill. read more

My first visit to Das Steinhaus was about 15 years ago, when a bunch of folks from work took me out to dinner here. I helped order the wine for the table; and, we had a fantastic time. Since then, I've made it a point to visit Das Steinhaus any time I return to Jefferson City. On my prior visit, I showed up before the restaurant opened (my stomach was still on Eastern Time); and, just ordered a supper to-go. On this visit, I showed up right at 5 with hopes for dining in the main restaurant; but, found out only the lounge would be open. I took a seat; and, was greeted by the bartender, presented with a menu; and, offered a drink. I wasn't sure what wine I wanted, so I said I'd look over the menu. The owner came out and greeted me; welcoming me back after I told him of my long-time relationship with his restaurant. He told me of the specials; and, took my order promising bread service, which came out promptly. I ended up with an excellent draft beer (Haufbrau) and the German Sampler platter. Everything was delicious, especially the beef roll (roulade.). It was just like the ones my mother used to make, in flavor (heavy bay leaves) and texture (fork tender.). The regular bartender came in and introduced herself as Sarah. She checked on me a few times; and, took care of the patrons at the bar (a vibrant local scene.) Toward the end of my meal, she turned on the music; and, turned off the TV, which made for better atmosphere. We're from out of town, stopped in on a whim not really knowing what to expect. We had the greatest meal, possibly ever. My husband had the sampler and I had the schnitzel, and everything was outstanding. We also got Black Forest cake to go because we were so full. This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Jefferson City. Delicious German food, eclectic atmosphere, wonderful staff and a charismatic owner. The Wiener schnitzel is absolutely delicious, as are the meatballs bordelaise. We've also tried the beef rouladen and the filet steak al a Diana and both were great. My friend and I were looking for lunch and Das Steinhaus was recommended by a friend. So we headed over for lunch. They were closed but a man came out from a side kitchen door and said they didn't open till 4 but if we wanted he would fix us a quick snack and we could have a few beers. The man is Helmut the owner. He gave us a beer a quick tour and a snack. We talk with him a few hours. We left and later that day returned for dinner. A great restaurant with a wonderful owner. I even meet other business travelers staying at the same hotel as I dinning there and they raved about it as well. It is a gem of a Resturant that should not be missed. Good German food. I enjoy the sausages as well as the ham. The schnitzel is great. Combine this with some sweet cabbage and fried potatoes and you have a solid hearty meal. The service is slow so be prepared to spend some time here. Although they were not busy, there were only a couple of wait staff so it was difficult to get their attention. Wow, this place is an episode of "Bar Rescue" waiting to happen. The music was loud, the people were louder talking over the mediocre, microwaved food. The taste was okay I guess, just meh! Bottles and jazz prints on the wall are dusty and dated. We won't go back. You can tell the food is pre-cooked, refrigerated and reheated.
