This restaurant used to be called CBD, but it underwent a revamp several months back, changing from a "pub" to an "Irish pub." As CBD, I went there a couple of times and generally thought the food was fine, but the service was so slow and painful that I couldn't really drag myself there unless nothing else was open in the area.
We went to Danny Doolans this past weekend for lunch on a Sunday. I was willing to give it another go. The menu has changed and it seemed that there were a few things that sounded good. It was freezing outside and I was drawn to the Guinness Pie (my husband got this as well). The idea of its potential in my head, unfortunately, led to disappointment when the dish actually arrived. The presentation was fine, nothing special. The mashed potatoes were not warm and there were peas piled up on them. Thankfully, the pie was much better. I wasn't really into the style of this pie (ingredients underneath a pie top - there was no pie sides or bottom, so, not really a pie). However, the flavor was pretty decent and it was warm, which was what I was wanting.
We were the only patrons in the restaurant at the time we went. Our server was friendly and attentive, but it still took a while for the food to come out.
In the end, the food is OK, nothing special and you can definitely get a better meal at many nearby places along Hood Street. That said, it's not the worst place, the atmosphere is OK and the food isn't entirely awful. If someone drags you there, it's not the end of the world. There is a kids menu, which my 3-year-old was happy with, so that was plus :) read more
