Attorney Barbara Stump was assigned as our mediator for a custody case regarding my four year old…read moredaughter. I was completely shocked and appalled by her lack of neutrality during our two hour session, her suggestions that presented no compromise and made literally no sense, and her unwillingness to demand the other party in my case to stop insulting me during our session. She had no problem with the other party in my case screaming obscenities at me and treated me as if I was the one who was unreasonable. This experience left the other party in my case even more emboldened to continue his verbal attacks and emotional abuse. I'm still in complete disbelief that this happened and looking into filing a formal complaint. Families deserve better than this. If you are in a similar position, petition for someone else if you actually care about your children and are advocating on their behalf.

I went to a meeting with this attorney, who is representing my fiance in a dependency hearing case in York County. I am not a client or hers but my fiance wanted me to go to the last meeting with her (my first). It seemed as if she did not want me to be there because she asked my fiance if she wanted me to be here. She said yes. I wanted her to know some things about the situation as the kids were at one time living with both of us in my home. She seemed to want to dismiss what I had to say... saying that it's not about you although saying I was in part to blame and saying that one of the kids was allegedly saying that I didn't want them to be living with me. I didn't ever remember saying that. Then upon hearing that I was just wondering why the CYS and or any of the attorneys didn't come to me for verification of that. It is about me I feel if someone is making claims about what I allegedly said but no one comes to me for verification. I also was expressing my (ours really) concern about some of the kids being on psychiatric meds and suggested we don't feel it is appropriate concerning the side effects and my desire for a more natural approach. She then was saying to me that the judge is not interested in your opinions and even threatening to throw me out off her office! She is a private attorney by the way. (paid but not employed by the county) She did I feel ask some pertanent questions to my fiance and offer one positive recommendation that could help but her treatment of me I thought was very unprofessional. . I actually helped both people understand each other better and I even helped answer some of the questions that she addressed to my fiance as English is not her primary language. By the way to this lawyer does not speak Spanish. The other takeaway I feel is that her attitude seems to be...this is what the judge wants. Not about what we want. It seems to be more pro-opposition than pro defense.
