I had a ton of nerves when I first arrived at the studio but from the moment I stepped through the studio door into the unique, secluded, boutique vibe the nerves melted away. James' arrangement advice and creative ability with production just instantly inspires confidence. The recording process itself was exciting, fun and creative. I didn't feel the usual 'red light syndrome' type pressure that you can feel in some studios and never felt like I was being watched or rushed. I was so happy with that first single that I've been back in 2009 to record an album and in 2011 to record another single. The sound that James pulls from his own handmade preamps and other gear just continues to blow me away along with the space, light and shade in his mixes. The finished songs never fail to sound better than I'd ever imagined. I can't recommend the experience and result more highly to any of my fellow musicians out there wanting to record and release their music.

For all those budding musos in Brisbane- stop saving! There is somewhere you can do a demo…read morerecording without washing your parents car for the next 10 years. Alchemix in Woolloongabba has exceptional rates for the use of their recording studio. I used to perform a lot (in a past life), and it was always important as a classical singer to have sound bites and recordings for audition purposes or to send to agencies. I went into Alchemix for a two hour session and got 5 pieces recorded and mixed (not heavily, but it was OK for my purposes) for less than $200. I have also been there with a group where we recorded some demos for a corporate gig. The facilities are decent and the guys in the studio are great. Some of them are sound engineering students, but they know their stuff. If you are looking for somewhere cheap with a reasonable set up to record, Alchemix offer great packages and prices.

Oh, the old BAT! How I love thee with such fond memories of yesteryear when I played Violet in…read moreWilly Wonker & The Chocolate Factory. Nestled on Petrie Terrace, there have been so many good times had in this venue and I'm so glad it's still around. In terms of Brisbane theatre it's a bit of an icon and a talking point. So many performers started their careers within the walls of the Arts Theatre and hopefully it will keep happening for decades to come! It's always good to keep an eye out on their season. And if you have kids who want to be involved in theatre there are frequent auditions for kids shows and always something to entertain them during school holidays. It's a great thing to support local theatre and the arts, so why not jump onto the Arts Theatre website and see if there's a play or musical to tickle your fancy. You won't get a more intimate or local experience in any other theatre in Brisbane.

Gosh. I love this place…read more I've been to a good few shows here over the years, and my last visit was my second viewing of Avenue Q in this venue. First up, this place is small, and yes, it's an amateur run place. I love how cozy it is. We were back row and still incredibly close, and they definitely get some great talent. There's a bar (you can't take alcohol into the theatre, but the bar opens a hour before the performance, and there's usually an intermission) with a limited range of alcoholic drinks, but you can get the usual soft drinks, snacks and ice creams too. I am particularly fond of BAT because they appear particularly fond of Terry Pratchett, so that's a big win in my books. Don't go in expecting QPAC, just go along, have fun and support a community theatre. There needs to be more places like this.
