West Lawn Cemetery

West Lawn Cemetery

I spent this Sunday doing one of the things I like best, exploring the history of South Florida…read more Dania Beach is the oldest incorporated city in Broward County. This cemetery was founded in 1904 when this area was part of Dade County. Many of the pioneers came to this area from Wisconsin to be tomato farmers. Since they were of Danish heritage the city was named Dania. While reading about the history of Dania I saw a YouTube video of Fred Beneby speaking about this cemetery which led me here. It turns out this cemetery is a result of some very sad and dark Dania history. According to Mr. Beneby, early Black pioneers came to this area from the Bahamas to work in what was once the tomato capital of the world. When they passed some of them were buried on the east side of the railroad tracks in Dania Memorial Cemetery which was an integrated cemetery. When the Klan became prominent in the 1930's and 1940's they decided that cemeteries needed to be segregated. They got prisoners to remove all of the bodies of anyone black and interred into what they termed the colored cemetery. Of course they didn't do a respectful job of moving bodies. They dumped people together, broke their headstones, and stole any jewelry they could find. In 1986 Mr. Beneby along with other community activists spearheaded the campaign to have the disrespectful name Colored Cemetery that was listed on some city documents changed to the more serene name West Lawn Park. Any names of people that were interred here during the move that could be known were added to a monument in the cemetery. On the outside of the cemetery is a monument that is basically an apology from the city to the people who were so insensitively dumped here. The cemetery is being kept up although some headstones still remain broken. If you visit the all white cemetery Dania Memorial across the railroad tracks you can't really tell the difference between the two. They look like the same cemetery divided by the railroad tracks but if you look closely on the south side of the West Lawn cemetery you can see the graves that were moved. They are the graves with Rest in Peace markers painted white. Of note, Hollywood's first black officer, R.D. "Jay" Sanders who died in 1994 is buried here. He served the city from 1951 to 1974.

I Helped my sister arrange her sons funeral. I don't know how people plan a funeral by themselves…read morewhen they're in so much grief. But Forest Lawn Funeral Home made all the arrangements easy. Joanna and Deidre were very helpful and kind. You may have seen their big pyramid from I-595 it's really a beautiful place, elegant and professional . We had one issue that needed to be addressed: I was shocked when I walked into the service, there were tall tables of Sports Displays at both ends of the coffin??? With a stuffed doll, a basketball , trading cards etc?? My friend, the mother said What is all this junk? We were in shock but late at arriving so there was nothing that I could do to have them removed. The sports displays might've been appropriate for a child, even a young teen. But not for a 30yr old. There was another display in the lobby, with basketball keychains- great if it were a 8yr olds birthday. It looked really tacky for a man's funeral. We were never asked if this was something that we needed because the answer would have been NO!! It looked tacky and out of place. The following day The funeral home called to follow up. And I told them my dismay - they apologized. But it's not something that you can undo. I did thank them for all their kindness and making the event easy, when it was such a terrible situation and untimely death.

I would strongly advise everyone to stay away from this company. I signed a contract for funeral…read moreservices but decided to cancel within the 30-day cancellation period. I was instructed to bring in a written cancellation letter with a wet signature, which I personally delivered on May 8th. I met with Bryant, who accepted the letter and assured me that my refund would be returned to the credit card I originally used for payment. I fulfilled everything required on my end. Seven days after submitting the letter, I still had no response -- no emails, no calls, and no refund. I contacted their office multiple times and received no answers. I texted KerryAnn and Sergio,, who were all very responsive when selling me the service, but suddenly disappeared once it came time to process the cancellation. On Monday, May 18th, I finally reached Bryant, who then changed the story and told me I would receive a paper check within two weeks instead of a refund back to my card. Why should I have to chase people just to get my own money back? He also said he would call me back to see if their office could still refund the money directly to my credit card -- of course, he never called back. I called again on May 20th, and once again no one could help me except the receptionist, Daphny, who had no answers. They are playing with people's emotions during an already difficult time. This is not a pair of shoes I purchased -- these are funeral services tied to emotional and financial stress. I truly feel that once I decided to go with another company that was significantly more affordable, they simply stopped caring. Now I've been left with no choice but to contact my bank and attempt a chargeback for the funds withdrawn from my checking account, and I still don't know how long that process will take. This experience has been extremely disappointing and unprofessional. Please be careful before doing business with them.

If I could give zero stars I would. I truly hope nobody else ever has to go through what my family…read morehas endured with this funeral home. It has been five months since my mother passed, and we still have not received her ashes. Throughout this time, I have been given nothing but excuses, misinformation, and outright lies. I was told the ashes were sent without a tracking number (which is impossible, as every mailed package has tracking). Later, I was told they were sent through DHL, yet DHL confirmed they do not ship human remains or ashes, and they had no record of any shipment under my name. In other words, the ashes were never sent. This man has repeatedly promised to email me tracking information, but somehow I never receive those emails despite receiving his "test emails" just fine. He dodges phone calls, ignores text messages, and has shown zero compassion or accountability. Even after I mentioned getting a lawyer involved, he refused to reach out. No grieving family should ever have to deal with this level of disrespect and negligence. We are now in the process of filing a police report. Please do not use this funeral home. They are unprofessional, dishonest, and have caused us nothing but pain during an already devastating time. Horrible, horrible company

However, when returning for the unveiling, it all went downhill. I'm talking about one man in the office and one man of the grounds crew driving the golf cart. When we arrived, it was raining, I went inside to make sure that our previously made arrangements with Courtney were being followed. A tent and chairs were requested. The chairs were there completely filled with water, like tiny swimming pools. The tent was nowhere to be seen. I asked the man in the office if we could please have our tent because it was raining, he replied "there is an overhang, unless the rain is driving sideways you will be fine." I did tell him the name of the person we were here for, and he should have known that there is no overhang where we were sitting. Therefore, we would not be protected. We went outside to make sure that what I had said was true. Lo and behold, there is no overhang. There is one on the side of the mausoleums, not where we were. In any case, a man comes by, a supervisor I assume, driving a golf cart with crew members walking along with him. I went over and said, "excuse me, sir, do you have any towels we might use to wipe off the chairs?" He looked at me blankly and replied "we don't have any towels." He then proceeded to throw a dirty, small yellow rag at me. As you can imagine, at an unveiling, for my family member, I was not in the mood. I walked quietly to the seats to wipe them off, where I discovered the mini swimming pools. There was a kindly looking crewmember near me, I asked him if he had any towels for me. He very nicely took the rag from my hand, produced his own as well, and proceeded to wipe all the chairs off. At least there's one crewmember that looks kindly upon people in their sadness. These may seem to be small or petty indiscretions by the staff. The inconsiderate office manager, the rude crew supervisor, the incompetent person who handled the unveiling reservation. I can assure you if you were burying a family member you would not be in the mood for this nonsense either.
