I've had good experiences with every member of the Toronto Public Library staff, but the staff at the Danforth/Coxwell branch seem particularly friendly and helpful. The branch is teeny tiny, so they can see you struggling to find a book or get your card to scan and they'll probably pop over and help.
I'm mostly in here to pick up holds. The branch is right by the TTC station and Shoppers, so it's easy to stop in when I'm walking by anyway. They have a well curated selection of books if you're browsing.
The thing I miss most about terrible corporate jobs is their access to fancy laser printers. I needed to print out a 75 page document and photocopy my IDs. I figured it would be a hassle to figure out how to add money to my library account, get my document into the print queue, and actually get it out of the machine. This is the sort of thing that somehow always takes an hour at Staples or a neighborhood copy shop, even though it seems like I should be able to just email them the PDF or something.
Adding money to my library account was super simple, as was uploading the document. Even though my library account, the money, and the print queue are all separate sites, they mercifully all use the same login and actually sync instantly. It took me five minutes and was no more complicated than adding money to my Presto card.
Then I walked over to the library and all the computers were down for maintenance. I say "all" but that's very dramatic because there are like six of them. One of the staff members showed me how to access my account from the printer itself. My file was there, ready to go with the settings I'd selected from home. She even helped me make sure my ID copies matched the very specific requirements I'd been given. My prints are clean and crisp, not like the stuff we've learned to accept from those sad little home printers. This whole process also took maybe five minutes.
I'm a little confused about the low rantings by other visitors. Giving a tiny neighborhood library a low rating for being tiny seems like giving a food truck a low rating for not having seating. It's very true that this is not the branch to go to if you want a spot to chill out and read, do your homework, or anything else that isn't a quick visit. read more
