I chose Birth Works LLC, Robin Massey to deliver my first baby…read more The positive- My baby and I are happy and healthy. My son received good care after he was born. The Birth Works birthing tub is amazing and the actual birth was the most wonderful, powerful experience of my life. The rest- I was the second delivery Birth Works had that day. My opinion is that they were all tired and that set the stage for me to receive poor care. My husband and I both felt like I was treated as an inconvenience through the entire time we were there. They didn't even give me time to pee once after the delivery before rushing us out even though I had a significant hemmorage that had barely stopped bleeding. I texted at 9pm the day before when contractions started, saying these were different from the practice contractions. I let them know when the contractions became closer and more intense.  I had to spend several hours the next afternoon texting and calling trying to convince them that I was in labor so someone would meet me at the center. In that time, I was told I didn't know what labor felt like, I wouldn't be able to joke between contractions, and this early labor could last for days. My timing of contractions at that time was 4-5 minutes. About six hours before he was born, I was informed to take a double dose of Benadryl and the prodromal contractions would go away so we ALL could get some sleep before real labor began. I was told that not taking the Benadryl could result in a c-section. They were well informed that I do not believe in taking any meds unless absolutely necessary and that Benadryl makes me feel horrible. I felt bullied, coerced, and not taken seriously. By the time I convinced them to meet me at the center, it was 6pm and I was 7 cm dilated. When my cervix was measured, Robin made it seem to be an urgent situation. Robin hadn't called her assistant yet. The AC hadn't been turned on until AFTER I had been measured despite me begging for the August hot building to be cooler. Once I got in the birthing tub, I was told to get in different positions to encourage a speedy delivery even when I said I was appreciating the less pressure of the water and needed the calm. I labored in the tub for less than an hour and pushed for less than 45 minutes. I quickly had a beautiful delivery of my son. They began draining the water I was in before my placenta detached and gave me several things to speed the process. Despite bleeding enough to get 2 pitocin shots and 2 cytotecs, I was encouraged to get out of the water myself and I fainted on the small 15 year old assistant while my husband helplessly held our newborn. I left a pool of blood on the floor. I was given RhoGAM that I didn't need when I verbally verified twice that I needed it due to baby's blood type. I found out months later that they wrote on his birth record that he was also Rh negative- meaning I did not need that injection and they knew it. We had agreed that I'd only get it if he was positive. We had his blood type tested months later and he is indeed A-. The birth record has a lot of incorrect information. It says I was discharged 12 hours later than I was. They "forgot" to include the two anti hemmoragic prescription drugs I needed. They submitted his social security info with the incorrect zip code. I was only given two postpartum appointments despite begging for the appointment schedule that I paid for. I was "fit in at lunch" for both of those appointments. The first was 4 days postpartum, not within 2 days like the contract. Despite asking for appointments, I didn't see her again until week 5 and was again "fit in at lunch". I paid the "global fee" $3800 by 36 weeks like the contract said. I paid almost $400 for things given to me at delivery that I never got a receipt for- all the fees they asked for were paid in full. Lots of those charges should have been unnecessary. I asked several times for the last receipts or a super bill receipt to turn into insurance. They said that's why we do a global fee- don't have to itemize. I requested a receipt for the things after the global fee. I never got one. Finally, I agreed to them turning it into insurance instead. They submitted a $7600 bill to insurance and made it seem like I still owed them money. Insurance sent them $2832.20. They did not give me any back and said they were forced to bill like that. In December, they told me that if I kept my story off social media, they would pay me back for the RhoGAM I didn't need. This was not the service a midwife should provide.

I do not recommend Robin for midwifery services. We hired her for 2 homebirths, 1 pregnancy that…read moreended in miscarriage and another pregnancy that we ended up firing her mid-care in Dec. 2023. She ignored any discussion of refunding what we had paid, after saying she would refund any payment over the deposit from the previous miscarriage. She takes on way too many clients and consistently cancels appointments or just doesn't show up. This was our experience each time, we live rurally and she was the only midwife available to do in home prenatal care/ birth. She makes you feel like you're inconveniencing her to come to these appointments. Postpartum care is lacking- she will respond by phone or text but you will have to nag her to come out or go to her. She also took a photo of our baby without our knowledge or consent (in the time it took me to go to the bathroom while she held my baby) and posted to her business social media. She then lied and said we gave her consent. We had verbally told her when we hired her we didn't consent to any pictures or anything on social media as we do not use social media or take pictures of our kids with phones. Birth Works Robin Massey is not an honest business. Trust your gut and find another provider!
