Today is actually my 3rd anniversary at The Human Form so what better time to finally write a…read morereview? The short story is HF changed my life. I'm nearly 61 and stronger and healthier than I've ever been. They helped me lose 70 lbs which was cool when I got to walk my daughter down the aisle at her wedding feeling good about myself and not worrying about the pictures to follow. It was even cooler when nearly 3 years later I held my granddaughter in my arms and felt confident I would be healthy and active and functional as she grew up. Enough about me. The concept of small group personal training flat out works. Never more than 5 people to coach so you get personal attention. You also get inspired, pushed, and motivated by the other folks. Worried about your age or your fitness level? Don't be. They make it work. The workouts are varied so you never get bored. Have or had some injuries? Don't worry about it. The coaches will modify anything so you stay healthy (or get better) and still provide you a challenging workout. By the way, I could do a separate review just on how good all the coaches are. Finally I will tell you that I assumed a high level of expertise from the coaches. What I didn't expect was to make friends and feel part of a community like I have and do. Bottom line this place is special. You should check it out.

I went to WiseWays this morning with a friend for an Easy Flow Yoga class. As it was my first time…read morethere, the instructor Julie was extremely helpful in getting my friend and me set up After filling out the necessary paperwork, we went into the yoga room. It's probably one of the coolest yoga spaces I've seen. The room is dimly lit with only natural light, the ceiling has drape-y things hanging from it, there are several woven baskets with mats and yoga props, and there are even bongos situated in the room! It definitely helped set the mood of the class. The teacher took the time to explain the set up and flow of the class to me and my friend. The set up was different for me. The class started with self-massage. I've never experienced that before, and while it was a foreign concept to me, I enjoyed it. During the self-massage, we were given some aromatherapy cream, which was awesome. I love smelling hippy smells like pachouli during yoga. It makes me feel more calm. The class was an hour and 15 minutes - definitely a great value! We went through gentle and modified versions of the sun salutation and many other common yoga poses. I enjoyed the gentle stretch and relaxation to start my weekend. But since I am more experienced in yoga, I wish it were a bit more vigorous. To be fair, though, I need to try the other two types of classes, as the Easy Flow is meant to be...well, easy. The only thing I disliked was that the class was only 3 people large. I enjoy bigger classes because I feed off of the energy of others in the class. I also have a feeling that most folks don't know about this place. If you're not interested in yoga, they also have tai chi classes. I recommend it and will be back!

With a year-long unlimited membership pass, I am pretty familiar with Wiseways/Shift yoga. (They…read morechanged owners and the name to Shift in January '13.) Upside: super friendly staff and fellow yoga lovers. Big enough parking lot and its kind of hidden around the corner. Wonderful, relaxing classes. Downsides: Sort of a small space, so right after they do a Groupon or something it can get grossly crowded for a week or two. Very limited weekend classes: none on Fridays or Sundays, and only one on Saturday at 8:30a. Pretty inconvenient if you have a regular 9-5. Also if you're under 30 you'll be the youngest in the class.

It is so hard to join here! First I called to ask about getting a membership, and they told me to…read morestop by. So I stopped by, and they told me to call. I finally started with one of their 6-week intensive programs. The classes are mostly really good. Kat is a great instructor, and Carly is also helpful, but another instructor who has since left did not share form or really demo much at all. The 6-week program had a reward of a travel voucher, and I did all the classes without missing, plus I checked in weekly on their fat measurement machine, and I didn't get the prize. I'm not sure exactly why that was, but I figured I still wanted to get healthier even without the prize. A year later, I keep finding out what exactly my membership entails. For example apparently I could have had one on one coaching sessions. That's never presented to you at the start. I had to ultimately join through an email exchange even after the 6-week program. It's a really well laid out gym, and the prices are super fair. A friend who joined as a guest told me these classes are a lot like cross fit but a little less intense. That was what he told me about the large group class he tried. I think it's a good spot either for classes or to do your own lifts or cardio, and it's never too busy. So in the end if you stay persistent, and chase down the owner/staff to get registered, you can have a great gym membership!

I have mixed feelings about this gym. I had a good coach and I think the coaches are for the most…read morepart well-intentioned. I enjoyed the classes, but the building where the classes are held is dirty and falling apart. I thought twice about each burpee as the floor needed a good vacuum and scrub. The ceiling was leaking and rather than getting it fixed week after week, the leak made the gym stink like vomit. Aside from those complaints, I enjoyed the classes and the times offered were pretty convenient. The main gym's bathrooms leave plenty to be desired. I felt like I was in a CARPETED prison with the weird bathrooms that only have hot water in some sinks. The water fountain was broken for over a week. Luckily they had bottles for people as a back up. And now to the issue that brought me reconsider my review: The owner Sharon is always after a sale. I felt this from the moment I walked in until the time I left. In fact, it is the reason I left. I have uploaded a picture as an example. There's always a new special, new coach going "on sale", new thing to add onto your membership, bring a friend, special classes (all the free passes expired in a week so good luck coordinating with a buddy). I completed a 6-week challenge and then canceled my membership as I was feeling confident about moving on to another gym that would not have the same "high pressure sales". No one reached out to ask why or see if I had a bad experience, etc. Not even a confirmation email saying that I would not be charged further membership fees. Out of the blue today, 6 months after completing the challenge and canceling my membership, Sharon emails trying to sell my wife and I both a 6 week challenge for the new year. Not one period in the email, all exclamation points and a couple of typos - as always ending her emails with "Here to help!" I don't feel helped by Sharon. I feel like a dollar sign.

Arguably the most aesthetically pleasing fitness studio in Columbus, you'll fall in love with…read moreCycle614 for its killer workout and great setup. When you walk in, you're immediately greeted by the people at the front desk who let you know your bike assignment. If you sign up online you can pick your bike and make sure you're next to your friends! The lockers match up with the bike numbers and there's always lovely candles burning in the lobby making it smell amazing. The studio itself is well designed with great wall murals and a disco ball. The lights are off during the workout and the disco ball and black lights are turned on giving it more of a club like atmosphere, especially since the music is blasting. I fully believe some of the instructors work as DJ's on the side... The workout is great, you can tailor the intensity and the performance board makes it easy to see how you're doing compared to everyone else in the class. The instructors incorporate light dumbbells and resistance bands into the workout so you're working much more than just your legs. They send out a workout summary email after the class as well so you can see how you did. I will say though that I don't think their calorie count is accurate, it seems a little high each time for a 45 min workout... After the workout you leave the studio with a wet, scented towel in hand to cool off. Note that the studio is freezing so you'll want a sweatshirt when you first go in, especially if you're early, but you will quickly work up a sweat once the class starts. Towels are also provided during the class. There are drinking fountains outside the room or you can purchase a water bottle for $2. The parking lot isn't huge, so you'll want to get to class early to get a parking spot, most of the classes get pretty full.
