Whether you are driving over during dusk, daylight, sunset, or nighttime, you are sure to have a beautiful view! Loved seeing the wonderful city of Jacksonville as I made my way in an uber from the airport to the hotel I'd stay 26 nights for a work trip. Amazed at the stunning views I saw and could capture a few photos on the two different times of day I traveled on this bridge. Loved being in an uber as I could truly marvel at the beautiful of the city from the view on the bridge.

Dames Point Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge. It's one of the largest cable-stayed bridges in the world with some 21 miles of cable. It stands some 175 feet tall handling the traffic of Interstate 295 East Beltway over the St. Johns River. Some claim that on a clear to be able to see Jacksonville from its peak highway point. Architecturally it's astoundingly beautiful. A sort of must-see when in the area.

The Dames Point Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge carries the Interstate 295 East Beltway over the St. Johns River. It is one of the largest cable-stayed bridges in the United States and has some 21 miles of cable supporting the deck. Construction completed in 1989. The bridge has a total length of more than two miles - 10,646 feet - and has a clearance of 175 feet over the water. On the deck, there is clearance of 39.7 feet, more than enough for just about every possible vehicle. Three lanes across in each direction, easy enough to drive even in a heavy rainstorm. Well, there I go again. Writing about bridges... I crossed this bridge while I was driving from Jax airport to where I'm staying. I liked the look of this bridge, and I liked the view of the surrounding landscape. Being a Californian, I find the vast greenery of the east coast both intriguing and beautiful. And this bridge allowed me to take in such a view. Traffic was virtually non-existent. The ride through this fine structure was smooth and fast. The other motorists were calm and considerate. Nothing bad can be said about the short amount of time I spent driving through here. I'll be through this bridge once more time, in a few days...

Do I really need a caption? "Spectacular Bridge" that should do it.

"Spectacular Bridge" should be the name of this bridge as It is spectacular looking from afar, near, and driving across it. It was a beautiful day to drive across Dames Point Bridge and take pictures of it!

The Dames Point Bridge is my 2nd favourite cable-stayed bridge coming just behind the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in Charleston SC. The journey over is a glorious emotional roller coaster. You ponder exactly how much speed you'll need to build up on the approach; how worryingly close the vehicle in the next lane is getting to you; whether you could survive should the aforementioned vehicle knock you straight off the bridge; why the ruddy driver ahead of you has decided to hit their breaks; if you're going to be fortunate enough to see a giant whopping great boat pass underneath; whether you can get away with squealing like an idiot on the descent and why your passengers are giving you odd looks. Worth a visit. Take a picnic, charge the cameras, bring the family and make a day of driving back and forth over this bridge.

The Dames Point Bridge is a gorgeous bridge. It is probably my favorite in Jacksonville and is definitely my son's favorite. He gets very excited when it's time to go over this bridge. When driving up the bridge there are very nice views of the surrounding area and the port. It offers a great view of Jacksonville. I've seen accidents on the opposite sides of the bridge and it seems it can get backed up very quickly and the lanes are pretty much shut down. Luckily I haven't experienced that but I also visit Jacksonville only occasionally.

Nothing like being fully stopped at the pinnacle of the Dames Point.

Currently, I live on the Westside between the 103rd and Wilson Blvd exits off of 295 and my new job is all the way over on Beach Blvd between FSCJ South Campus and UNF. The best possible route to take, believe it or not, is just to get on 295 at Wilson and take it alllllllllll the way around to either the Atlantic Blvd or Beach Blvd exit (all depending on the traffic flow in the morning). I know, insane, right? Who would have thought that taking the long way around on the highway would be faster than going through the city? Sad, but true, that is the best route every morning for work. This being the case, it's no wonder that the Dames Point Bridge and I are becoming fast friends. I've always been in awe of this bridge. I'd dare say that it is my favorite of the seven. It's very regal in its construction and offers a brilliant view no matter which way you cross. I wish that I had an onboard camera to capture some of the beautiful sunrises that I've seen and the general scenery as well. I did some freelance work out of one of the taller buildings in Downtown Jax with an awesome view above the treeline and there in the distance stood the Dames Point, in all its wonder. Apparently, it's been standing for over 20 years. You'd never know it with such a modern design.

This is easily my most favorite bridge in the city. I especially love driving over it at sunset. It is breathtaking. I love the height of the bridge and the design is very cool. I love when driving up on either side you can see the water below. This is a great way to get around on the north side and I don't ever mind driving on the bridge. The only issues I have with this bridge are the same issues that are encountered with any bridge. If there is a crash or something closing down one or more lanes, it can be hard to get around it and will take you quite a while.

I love this bridge. It's so beautiful. It's so high. On a clear day you can see for miles and miles, and even get a really great view of downtown Jax. After all, at it's peak, it's 175 feet tall. I know I've been over this bridge thousands of times since I moved to Jax nearly 20 years ago. I lived on the Northside and had to drive over the bridge twice a day to and from work for many years. Traffic generally flows pretty smoothly (and quickly) over the bridge. The only time it gets backed up is if there has been an accident. The bridge is so steep, that if you happen to be driving a stick and traffic does get backed up, your left knee will be killing you by the time you get over the bridge. Unfortunately, that has happened to me on several occasions. As much as love love the look of the bridge, the view from the bridge, and the smooth ride over the bridge, if it's raining heavily, it can be a scary drive over the bridge because it's so high... especially if the wind is whipping hard while it's raining. Basically, if it's raining, slow down and be careful. A few years ago (or maybe more than that.... my memory is crap), a woman was parked on the side of the bridge and standing in front of her car. I can't recall if she'd had a flat or if there had been a minor accident or what exactly had caused her to pull over and get out of her vehicle... but along came another car and tapped her back bumper and since she was standing in front of her car, her car bumped her over the bridge into the water below. Luckily, she was on the long, lower part of the bridge (although that part is still high too) and when she hit the water, she was able to swim to one of the bridge pillars and hang on until rescue got there. If she'd have been on the high part of the bridge, it's likely she would have been killed upon impact with the water. Why I'm bringing this up, I'm not entirely sure.... I think maybe just to say: Hey people, slow down and pay attention to what you are doing and what those around you are doing. This is most definitely a bridge you do not want to have an accident on.

Every time I pass through Jacksonville I am struck by how beautiful this bridge is. It may have opened 22 years ago, but it still looks like a wonder of modern architecture. Maybe not as cutting-edge as it once was, but that its appeal hasn't faded is a testament to the easy beauty of its design. It is also functional, so that's nice too.

    Impending doom
    Michelle M.

The view from this bridge is always spectacular no matter what the weather. The architectural lines, and the symmetrical angles of the cables on this suspension bridge are pleasing to drive by at 80 mph or less (but best enjoyed at the legal speed limit am I right Law Enforcement?). As long as there's no accidents, I love driving across the Dames Point bridge.

    High in the sky!

What a beautiful architecture. If you don't drive over bridges... Don't move to Jacksonville! It's loaded with bridges.

It is a statue of three lions, climbing on top of each other, with water spouting out of the top of the mountain of lions. San Marco is one of Jacksonville's oldest neighborhoods, if not the oldest, and is known for being a very artsy neighborhood, mixed with a substantial amount of wealth, which also makes it one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Jacksonville. River Rd. runs through this neighborhood, with it's mansions lining the street just along the St. Johns River. Old houses, of all different kinds of architecture, from the Spanish and Mediterranean styles, to the Victorian, to the Colonial, to the Hampton styled beach homes [although they aren't on the beach], give it a stunning aesthetic. River Rd is a beautiful place to go for a walk if it is out of your reach for living [aka nearly everyone]. The Square, which this fountain is situated smack in the middle of, is home to many restaurants, shops, and bars, making this almost like a town inside a city. It's a very walkable neighborhood, with even it's own theater for catching the latest movie. The food came out hot, fresh, and honestly better than expected. Every bite had that "yeah I would order this again" feeling, especially because it did not feel overcomplicated, just well made and satisfying. There, upon the sun-drenched Southbank, gazing ever-steadfast toward the sparkling St. Johns River, stands a monument not merely of bronze and granite, but of valor, legacy, and Jacksonville soul itself! This isn't just a statue. It's a seafaring epic cast in metal--an ode to every sailor who has ever felt the bittersweet tug of the horizon, to every family who's stood watching a loved one depart or return. Sculpted by the legendary Stanley Bleifeld, the Lone Sailor leans with stoic purpose on a dock post, duffle at his side, cap set precisely so, that peacoat's collar upturned in defiance of any metaphorical storm. You can practically hear the briny breeze, the whispered memories, the pride swelling in the city's chest! The statue's placement on the Riverwalk is nothing short of poetic. With the mighty St. Johns as its eternal backdrop, the Lone Sailor becomes a part of Jacksonville's lifeblood, an indelible marker of its maritime identity. It is no accident that this is one of only a select few "Lone Sailor" statues in the nation--an honor bound to Jacksonville's historic, tight-knit bond with the U.S. Navy. This city doesn't just host the Navy; it embraces it as family, and this landmark is the bronze heartbeat of that relationship. More than an artwork, the Lone Sailor is a monument to service, sacrifice, and the spirit of adventure. At sunset, as the city skyline ignites and the river glows, there's almost a cinematic grandeur to the scene--the Lone Sailor silhouetted, embodying the courage, hope, and grit that pulses through Jacksonville's veins. Local, visitor, sailor, or civilian--none can stand before this icon and remain unmoved. It is Jacksonville's reminder that, just as the river flows onward, so does the legacy of those who serve. In the grand panorama of Jacksonville's Riverwalk, the Lone Sailor towers not just as a statue, but as an exuberant celebration of heritage, a cultural touchstone, and an eternally watchful guardian on the threshold between land and sea. If ever a landmark deserved unrestrained applause, it is this--so stand, salute, and bask in the boundless spirit of The Lone Sailor!
