My son attended kindergarten and his first semester of first grade at CLPS. My husband and I adore…read morethe staff, kindergarten teacher, and all the friends we made during our time there. It was a hard decision to leave our friends after being part of a large community of homeschooling families for over a year, but we felt it necessary. We want our son to flourish academically which is why we decided to educate him in this way but, after experiencing the program, I had concerns regarding the curriculum. Since I was new to homeschooling though, I decided to give the program a chance. I noticed around early October 2018 that my son was really struggling in certain areas and it was taking us over 6 hours each satellite day to prepare him for his Tu/Thurs classes. Although, academically he was still achieving high A's, it was putting too much stress on my barely 7-year-old. After completing the first semester, it was clear to me that grammar and writing composition were on a 4th-5th grade level, the science and history portions were barely present, the phonics/reading program was extremely weak, and the only subject we did love was Saxon math. In writing and grammar, he was being asked to write and re-write lengthy detailed papers with visual aids and diagram sentences beyond a reasonable age level. After doing some research, I found that popular private schools in our area do not introduce formal writing programs until 3rd-4th grade. I also noticed that my son was learning more about prepositional phrases than gaining a strong foundation in reading and phonics. This was the most disappointing part of our semester. We would spend very little time on reading and spelling. I was excited about giving my son a strong reading foundation by teaching him to segment sounds, blending, decoding, etc....but the English worksheets that we would receive were not strong in teaching the concepts and rules of the English language. I did not see a true English/spelling curriculum during this time. Everything seemed a little thrown together which created a great deal of busy work that lacked substance. Unfortunately, reading always seemed to take a backseat. I tried to incorporate my own lessons but I found it to be too exhausting to add any additional curriculum to our already busy day. Education has always been an important part of our lives. I have a bachelor's degree and my husband a master's degree. We do believe kids should be challenged academically and that is why we decided to use a university model school. However, these rigorous programs need to make sense for the age of the child. Pushing them beyond a 2nd grade level while still in 1st grade is inappropriate and discourages the love of learning. My son became extremely frustrated to the point he was exhibiting physical signs of stress. This was not what I envisioned when I decided to homeschool my child. The elementary years, especially kinder-2nd grade, are huge fundamental years and should encourage a healthy respect for learning. I do feel that the academic team at CLPS cares for their students however, I also feel that they are trying to prepare our small children for a level of learning that is unnecessary and prevents them from obtaining a strong foundation in core subjects and a future desire to learn. After speaking to one of the administrators about the curriculum, I was told that nothing would change even though my concerns were valid and I could supplement on my own where needed. This was just not an option for us as I was already paying for their program and spending most of my day trying to help my son complete his homework. This response was less than reassuring given the cost of the program. I feel that it is the responsibility of the educator to keep the parent informed and to be able to justify their chosen methods. After pulling my son from the school, I found that half of the parents in our grade that asked me why we left were feeling stressed about the same things. CLPS has such a wonderful community of families; I would strongly encourage them to consider reevaluating their curriculum.
