We took advantage of their lunch special to grab a quick bite while watching the ships go through the canal and searching for kitschy souvenirs of Loch Ness in the nearby shops.
For £3.85 you get a cup of soup and ham or cheese sandwich with lettuce, tomato, pickle, mustard, etc. The soup was cream of mushroom, heavy on the cream, but with enough bits of mushroom to know that it's there. For the sandwich, I chose ham with mustard and pickle, which got some interesting looks from the man behind the counter (for the Americans reading this, these aren't kosher dill slices of pickle - it's more like a chutney). It wasn't much, but after a full Scottish breakfast, including haggis that morning, we just needed a wee bit to stop the growl. All the ingredients were fresh.
They've got lots of meats and jarred food stuffs for sale, but we weren't in any position to take such items with us, nor to have it shipped. read more
