Nunawading has no shortage of decent Chinese restaurants, and Lucky Yu just adds to the mix. Lucky…read moreYu has been around for years, and for years I have been a loyal customer, particularly fond of their chicken and sweet corn soup. The funny thing is, I'm not usually a fan of said soup. However one day I arrived home after picking up my Lucky Yu goodies only to discover my won ton soup was actually chicken and sweet corn. Oh the horror! Rather than drive back down, I ate the soup. That was three years ago and I have not looked back, my obsession with chicken and sweet corn extending out of Lucky Yu and into any chinese restaurant I go to. Lucky Yu still holds a special place in my heart though as they were my first.

The only reason that I stopped here was because I was on my way to a movie night at a mate's place, and we were all bringing our own takeaway. This place isn't going to make me drive the extra 10 minutes or so just to grab their food, but really, it isn't bad. In fact, it's pretty reasonable food at decent prices. I had beef in blackbean and fried rice, and I walked out of the shop with change from a twenty dollar note. So it isn't expensive for what it is. The serving sizes are pretty good, too. If I'd bought an entree, it would have been enough to feed two people comfortably, but I somehow managed to find my inner manliness to force myself to finish it. You don't leave food when you eat with your mates. It's a sign of weakness. Doubly so if the food is bad. The place itself was relatively neat, possibly a bit on the daggy side, but still acceptable. If I was doing a hard day's furniture shopping on Whitehorse Road, I'd be happy to eat there again.

Saturday lunch starting at 11.00, 2/04/16…read more The restaurant is located in a small group of shops along Maroondah Highway in Ringwood. White stone wall meet you in the entry with two elephants, which at the front door brings good luck, protection and strength to the restaurant. We were seated right next to the two large fish tanks that run alongside the entry, the positioning of the tank is because, water represents the flow of wealth and abundance into your establishment. These two tanks are very clean and with some healthy large gold fish in them The tables are a cherry vanished with a cherry lacquer tables and solid wooden chairs. All the tables are set ready for the days service. Burgundy floral wallpaper dominates the room that gives the room a sense of richness that is broken up by the two large TV units on different walls and the large Chinese style painting. I am thinking that the TV is there for the people who don't wish to communicate with their other diners. The ceiling is black that encloses the room and would look better if it was a lighter color. There are large bronze / yellow pendant lights around the room with a few down lights and some Chinese lantern style wall lights to illuminate this well lit room. There is a beautiful large Chinese urn in the centre of the room and a Yucca plant in each corner of the room. There was piano music in the background a well stocked bar. The waiter that served us was polite, helpful and at tentative. Toilets were clean with new floor tiles but the cubical that I went into the seats was broken and needing replacement. We ate from the their Yum Char list selecting some entrées selecting prawn and chive triangle, steamed pork bun, vegetable spring roll, prawn & pork steamed with ginger & spring onion and steamed rice. All the food was tasty, hot straight from the kitchen, cooked in clean oil and we found to be ample for the two of us for lunch, we will return.

The Peking duck is phenomenal, we were in a group of 7 and they carved an entire duck for us! The food is fantastic and I would DEFINITELY go again!

We arrived without a reservation and when they said we could only have the table for a 75min before the next booking would arrive I figured that was a very good sign! Golden Duck is popular and for good reason. The service was very good, efficient yet friendly. Our tea was replenished, our dishes appropriately paced and little touches of traditional Chinese silver service made this a great experience. We ate seafood lettuce cups and xiao long bao to start before tackling a half portion of Peking duck. Served as 8 slices (with pancakes and accoutrement), two crispy legs and a basket of steaming fragrant duck dumplings, this was exceptional value at $29. We also had (mildly spicy) Sichuan Chicken and some fried rice that came loaded with Bbq pork and prawns. It was all fresh and delicious and between the three of us it was a very decadent feast. At $130 for three people (with no alcohol) it was a little on the spendy side, but we ate very well and really enjoyed a dining experience that isn't so common in this part of Melbourne. Would happily come again!

The sour soup was hot and sour and really quite good. Main course omelette was tasty and... deep fried icecream just had to be done! The dining area looked grubby with food spilt under a nearby table in full sight ignored by the staff there. It doesn't take much to keep the place clean when you've got customers, even at the end of the night.
