Eric the owner, not only knows bourbon, he can also advise you on the perfect wine for your upcoming dinner party. Best of all, his staff also gives exceptional customer service. Instead of traditional shopping carts, Ely Liquor had little red wagons to pull through the store as you shopped for your adult beverages.

The store is quite large. There are many different areas. The back has a walk in cooler and a cooler specifically for seltzers. Had they not shown us this part, i'm not sure if i would've known it was back there and appropriate for shoppers. They had a ton of wine, so i picked up a couple bottles of local wine. I was interested in their boxed and carton wines. What a great idea for those going out on a boat! I was looking to make sangria, so i needed a small amount of brandy. I asked at the register and they had quite a few small bottles. i got a bottle of brandy for $3.59! It was enough for the sangria recipe and then some! perfect. Their spirits selection was good. They didn't have a lot of fancy bourbon so i asked the owner and she said their allotment had not come in but it was increasingly more difficult to get anything these days with the covid pandemic. They were waiting on buffalo trace, larceny and some other Kentucky bourbons to arrive. According to her, the bourbons sell out fast. They have six pack containers that you can mix and match for craft beer. We made our own six pack. We visited again during our stay and received the same care and attention. Lots of wood paneling, pictures of fish, pull tabs behind the bar BUT, this specific classic Minnesota bar has a focus on local beer, so you can actually get a damn good IPA on tap, and you won't find Bud or Coors on draft. Given that our state makes fine drinking liquids, the North shore needs more places like this. Also, they are pretty welcoming to kiddos, which is important when the kids are hungry and literally the only option after 7pm is to seek out bar pizza. It's Giovanni, not Heggie, still solid.

What a Northwoods gem! Surly Furious on tap, you can't ask for much else…read more But we did. Beer and dinner for 5, 4 of which just emerged from a week of canoeing Quetico, and we were starving. The waitress (she is really nice!) said 2 larges would be enough for the 5 of us and she was right - we had almost no leftovers (good thing, we were staying in a motel with no fridge), but it was a stretch (literally) to eat it all. I have to say, for a Northwoods pizza joint the crust was really good. Toppings not half bad either, and they really like to load up your pie with banana peppers. We had a great time. I noticed on the way to the men's room that they have a nice game area for the kids, and it looked well-used. Also liked the free popcorn, though I'm sure it makes lots of people thirsty enough to order another beer. Next year we try the wings!!!
