Save yourself years of regret. Hiring Sam Smith and Kira Damusis was one of the most damaging…read moredecisions I've ever made during an already traumatic divorce. I trusted them with the safety of my child and the outcome of my custody case, and they failed me at every step. Sam Smith personally sold me on her "hands-on" approach, but after retaining the firm, she never touched my case again. Not once. Even after repeated requests for her attendance at hearings, only Kira showed up, despite Sam being the one whose services I was promised and paid for. Their handling of evidence was unforgivable. I provided multiple notarized affidavits, photos, recordings, and documentation of my ex-husband's substance abuse disorder, none of which were submitted to the court. As a direct result of this negligence, I now share 50/50 custody with a parent who poses safety concerns to our child. This outcome could have been prevented had they done the most basic part of their job. They also submitted my divorce documents late, which unnecessarily extended my case by four months. At no point did they take responsibility for this delay. The professional conduct was just as disturbing. During a charged and vulnerable phone meeting, Kira yelled at me and victim‑blamed me, saying: "Well, you shouldn't have married a drug addict." That was her legal "guidance" as I was trying to advocate for my child's safety. They provided me with an incorrect holiday schedule, which caused an incident where my ex‑husband abused his time. Because their schedule didn't match the court order, enforcement was impossible. This is basic family‑law competence, and they failed it. I later learned, through other attorneys and court personnel, about several crucial protections that could have been included in my custody agreement: stipulations for communication, consequences for violations, safety conditions, and specific parental responsibilities. None of these were ever offered, suggested, or even discussed. They simply did the bare minimum. I never met either attorney in person. Communication was inconsistent, sometimes disappearing for long periods, and Kira even called me during vacations with abrupt and unpleasant demands. At one hearing, she provoked the judge and made the situation worse. I drafted the distribution‑of‑assets outline myself, and they inserted it verbatim into the judgment with no advisement, no professional guidance, and no required financial stipulations (timelines, interest, consequences for nonpayment). Again, I did the work; they collected the fee. These lawyers failed to protect me, failed to protect my child, and failed to uphold even the minimum standards of competent legal representation. I regret ever hiring them, and I strongly urge anyone considering them to look elsewhere.

This was the most unprofessional experience I've ever had in my life dealing with this law firm and…read moreKendra Hollingsworth. I retained Kendra for my divorce and was never given any due diligence or care to my case. I was constantly mislead with information and lied to about costs of this case. I was victim of felonious domestic violence from my x wife and a victim of criminal contempt due to the violation of a restraining order I had against my x wife. Instead of fighting for me Kendra connived me into walking into mediation and put me under undue stress to sign an agreement to pay my x wife money and let her walk all over me in the mean time. Kendra did not even try to negotiate prior to "claiming mediation was court order" WHEN IT WAS NEVER court ordered. I was not able to recover anything to include damaged property, mental distress to myself and child, legal fees for the divorce and PPO violation. Kendra came into mediation completely unprepared with none of my interests in mind and then charged me $900 to "prepare" a document I created and she copied and pasted (which she still had the incorrect information on). She then charged me $1300 to do nothing at mediation but threaten me to pay my x wife or "face the wraith of the judge". She allowed opposing counsel to misrepresent information without any documentation to corroborate. Kendra lead me to believe she was fighting for me the entire time leading up to the falsely acclaimed "court ordered mediation" and then she came to mediation unprepared where she unloaded a bunch of misinformation on me that she had never mentioned before in the 4 months I had been dealing with her. As my representation she even allowed the mediator to threaten me into a panic attack. She then lied to me and told me to go ahead and pay my x wife $1300 because I was be returned money from my $2500 mediation retainer. This was also a falsehood as shortly after mediation I was given an invoice where she used the entire retainer and had additional charges. She even told me that mediation fees would come out of the cost of the retainer. This was a lie. I had to have a conference with Kendra and Robert Stelmock about the incompetence Kendra presented with misleading information and lack of preparation during my entire case. The only basis for their incompetence was that I made 30k more than my wife a year and all of her irresponsibility was my fault. My pain and suffering had no bearing on my case. As a military veteran suffering from PTSD from two wars and a victim of felonious assault I had to pay over $13,000 in legal fees to this law firm to "cut my loses" even though I was mislead to believe that I had a strong case and Kendra would fight for me. I had a hard time getting timely responses from Kendra and my x wife was allowed to violate myself and son continuously with no help from my legal representation. I requested numerous motions to be filed on my behalf and Kendra refused. She treated this like it was a regular divorce and could have cared less for my safety and mental health. I just want to warn anyone thinking about using this law firm that if you have money, that is all they care about. I will be filing a complaint with the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board due to the incompetent nature in which my case was handled. Robert Stelmock has had a violation in which he was suspended for the actions similar to what I am speaking of now. It seems the rest of the law firm is well versed in the same practices. Please beware of this law firm. **Update** Spoke to Mr. Stelmock where he believed everything I experienced and my unhappiness with the incompetent representation was an "opinion". Only disregard for my experience. He felt no need to right any wrongs that occurred during my mishandled business with this law firm. In the end...my representation (Kendra) even tried to convince me to illegally deviate from the mediation settlement agreement and when I refused eventually I was overcharged for "conversations" just to close things out. Once again please avoid this law firm.

The process was not only good for us but also beneficial for our children. With Mr. Stelmock's guidance we were able to make our own decisions regarding custody, parenting time, distribution of assets and liabilities and support without the court making a decision for us. I highly recommend Mr. Stelmock as a family law mediator.
