This interaction has convinced me this is the last time we're shopping here. I went in on 10/6 to…read morepurchase some Guinness for some recipes we're making. After getting into the store, I walked over to the beer section. Nice neon pink sign above the Guinness, 8 pack of cans for $15.99. I got to the register and the guy scans it and says $18... Now I'm not a math wizard BUT I know that the amount didn't sound right. I looked up and noticed the $15.99 that it was supposed to be rang up at $16.17. I said ummm the sign says $15.99. The cashier responds yea but there's sales tax and bottle deposit. I said I get that BUT the subtotal should say $15.99. He then goes on to this long drawn out story that they do that at the register so the people paying cash don't need to bring 81 cents with them and they don't have to make change for someone that pays them $18 in cash. I paid, and was not even offered a receipt. Had I remembered Connecticut Consumer Commodities Law (CGS Sec. 21a-79) at the time, I'd have asked to speak to the owner. That specific statue is known as the "Get it for free" section: Get it for Free: If an electronic checkout scanner rings up a consumer commodity at a higher price than the posted shelf price, you are entitled to one instance of that item completely free of charge, up to a value of $20. I was argued with, told it was easier for them to not have to make change and the only "fix" was the cashier saying "oh yea I really need to change that sign". While it doesn't seem like a bid deal (and I was on a break from my job so I wasn't going to stand there to argue over ~20 cents), it actually is. This business is in direct violation of CT laws. I've already reported it to CT Liquor control agency since this amounts to fraud.

Happy to support this new but growing Super Store! This store, along with the Waterbury location,…read moreare by far one of my favorite places to shop for beer, wine or any drink of choice. Sure, they have a HUGE selection of wines, beers (cold), and pretty much anything your heart desires. But what continues to set them apart is the awesome folks that own and operate the place. Everyone is knowledgeable, helpful, and goes above and beyond to help you get whatever you need. As a local small business owner I too appreciate the hard work, pride and great service this family-owned business provides. Like other liquor stores, they host wine/liquor tastings, so make sure you follow them online to read about the new events. I especially love how they support local varieties, be sure to ask about their local liquors and beers. If they don't have your favorite beer, ask, they'll do their best to get it! For example, this is the same business that helped my (Texan) friend get his favorite beer while temporarily working in the state. After expressing interest in his favorite beverage (Shiner Brock) they made sure to get him a few cases and started stacking them. He drives 40 minutes from Stratford, CT to get his favorite home state brew. This is the type of service that helps separate this business from others. The store parking is plentiful, location is easy to access, the place is well lit, clean, and the different types of liquor are easily identified. There's a huge section for wines, sorted by countries of origin, styles, etc. (I'm not a wine snob so I just ask them for help as I get educated on the different types), the liquor is separated by types - bourbons, whiskeys, rums, etc., and the beer is near the back, next to the huge walk-in fridges. If you stop by, let them know Angel from WoodyThings sent you =)

Between the New Bottle Shop and its sister store,…read moreOddBins Bottle Shop on Whitney (which really shines in terms of wine and vintage port), I've never wanted for access to--or knowledge about--good wine, beer, or liquor in New Haven. The proprietors here are extremely knowledgeable, and whereas they may not be as immediately outgoing as their competitors at Wine Thief (as some other reviews have alluded to), they really treat their regulars well. For instance, they'll get a few bottles each year of some of the rarer, more sought-after bourbons, and instead of selling them online or advertising them to out-of-town buyers (which surely be exponentially more profitable), the guys at New Bottle Shop will set them aside to sell only to customers who they actually know, and only minimally marked up. (I know they have a similar policy for limited edition craft beers, as well.) They'll also go way out of their way to help neighborhood customers to track down any rare bottle they don't already have in stock. It's incredibly kind and helpful of them, and really adds to the neighborhood feel of the place. Can't recommend highly enough.

I used to love this place, great beer selection. It became the only shop my wife & I would buy beer…read morefrom. We love higher end IPA & DIPA. Every once in a while we would get a four pack of a beer that we buy often and the taste would be slightly off. I alway attributed this to the way it was shipped. Hot/cold trucks. This has happened with a few of our regular beers like Beer'd Dogs & Boats & King Sue as well as a couple others. When I went in early this AM I found out why, they had stocked the shelves with beers from the cooler! They were actually sweating there on the shelf. I don't know about you, But when I'm paying 16-22$ a FOUR pack. I expect the place I'm buying it from to treat it with respect. When I checked out (no beer! Just booze) I had mentioned it to somebody up front. I was laughed at and told it's a myth that beer chemistry changes when it goes from cold to hot them back to cold. COME ON GUYS!! I don't even let that happen at my house!!! And a liquor store saying that is shocking! For example, Toppling Goliath has a beer KIng Sue. When you go to Glenro it is sold from boxes off the floor. Not chilled. It says on the box it is a live beer keep cool. I was told by the guys at Glenro that is BS they just write it to get cooler space. And they receive the beer warm. If you call the brewery they will tell you it has active yeast in it so if it's temp gets higher than 73 or so the yeast will die and change the flavor. They ship all their King Sue out cold & expect it to stay cold until you buy it. When I am buying good beer, I want it to taste the way it was brewed to taste. Not the way Glenro wants it to taste.
