This location is across from the football field of Bolsa Grande HS. Parking can be hectic depending on the time you would go or if there's a high school game. First year of club is coming to an end. We have had a great experience here. Micha and Christine…read moreare coaching and have done well. The season started with tryouts and all parents (from what we noticed) received one on one time with the coaching staff. I assume so we could all get to know the staff and start to open lines of communication. Micha also shared his expectations for this team so that all parents could know what we were getting our families into. Back office stuff was smooth. Brittany was on top of payments and merch that we asked for. Calendars, uniforms and group chats were all communicated without prompting by us. Interpersonal dynamics between girls was positive and pleasant. Coaching and goal setting was set from the beginning, as a parent I appreciated this as our goals aligned. During practice and tournaments the coaching staff was always professional and coached the players with development in mind. U14 is almost done. There are a good amount of trees to absorb the noise pollution from the traffic on Knott Avenue. Small picnic area is available for a little lunch rendez vous. There is a play area for children - jungle gym, swings. There is also a nice grassy area for you dog lovers and great for t-ball or soccer practice. Basketball court is available for a quick game of horse, one-on-one or larger team play. And there are nets in the basket, for all your nothing-but-net shots. I feel like I have made quicker progress at this gym compared to other places because of this. It's a small gym at this point in time; a lot of the classes feel almost like private sessions. It's a hidden gem! Definitely drop by if you're in the area, whether you've been doing bjj your whole life or if you're interested in trying out for the first time! Coach Edwin is a highly-qualified black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu who truly cares about the art,…read moreas well as the progression of his students. I trained with Edwin for more than a year, and 100% still would be if I lived in the area. Before starting, I watched a little UFC, and had heard of BJJ but I had zero experience in practicing combat sports, and really didn't have a clue what BJJ was. Now I'm all in, two comps deep, and am eager to train whenever I can - I really don't think that would be the case if Edwin's classes weren't so engaging, and if the environment wasn't so welcoming (even the other students go out of their way to help make their training partner better each session). Coach Edwin concentrates on the fundamentals and builds a foundation for his students, no matter what level they are. It's apparent that he has experience teaching, and uses that to his advantage when coaching. He understands the fine details of each technique that he's teaching, and can explain how you can improve in any given position by applying small adjustments to your game. When he starts explaining a guard, movement, take-down, submission, etc., the entire class is dialed into whatever he's saying. He's not one of those guys who will scoff at you for asking a question, or look down on you for not knowing something. He actually encourages you to ask questions, especially if you are a white belt. If you're considering starting BJJ or if you're looking for a new place to train, I would highly recommend the Grappling Lab. Your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, confidence, and cardio will thank you!
