Cooperative efforts between the Forman family, City of Parkland Mayor and City Commissioners, Broward County Board of County Commissioners, and Riverglades Elementary PTA have enabled this once endangered native land to be planned, restored, and opened to the public under the 1989 Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL) Bond Program. In order to further a common goal and protect this uniquely diverse 20-acre site for public enjoyment and education, Broward County voters, on March 14, 1989, approved a $75 million bond issue referendum to acquire this and several other sites across the county. In turn, to provide public access, site amenities were designed, including a 5' wide, 900' long pedestrian trail traveling through pine woods and a 1,550' boardwalk meandering through cypress wetlands and past a breathtaking oak hammock. Two seating and observation areas along with a pavilion area are located along the trail. The public is encouraged to view this wondrous natural resource, to absorb its beauty, and to learn the importance of its preservation for future generations' quality of life. This is a nice, quiet place to go for a short walk. I saw hardly any people. It was kind of attached to a school with a fence which I guess is nice but didn't want people to think I was creeping about so I stayed away from it. Lol. There is no official parking so you kind of have to park on the street. I wasn't towed so I guess it was ok. I would return.

The trail is nicely shaded and the path is wide and stable - might be a nice short running route. It links to some other local trails! The trail offers some side of the road parking, which seems to be underutilized. The park offers free bug spray at the entrance, which is spectacular because I can imagine it may get buggy in all that glorious shade. I love finding spaces like these, and look forward to coming back with the kids.

There was a Little Free Library kiosk with a bunch of books at the beginning of the trail. Took a hike on the cement winding trail and found a posted map of the area including the different types of wildlife that may be hiding. I did see movement in the brush along side the trail but unsure what type of animal it was. It was brutal hot so took a break on a wooden bench and just listened to the sounds of the crickets and birds. Due to the heat, never made it to the observation tower at the end.

Over 59 species of animals have been documented here. They include birds, squirrels, butterflies, and reptiles. A paved loop takes you through the area and leads to an observation platform. Amenities include a bike rack, water fountain, benches, and informative signs. Different events are held here and you can find a list on the board next to the parking lot.

In addition to the parks, Coconut Creek also has greenways. The greenways are closed to vehicles and make safe travel possible. The city has made many improvements to the greenways through grants from Broward Beautiful, Kodak American Greenways, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The paths are often short, most are only a quarter of a mile, but they are still a nice place to walk around. The Long Pine Greenway is broken into north and south sections joined by a bridge. The north section at 5551 W. Hillsboro Boulevard is .18 of a mile and the south section at 6901 Lyons Road is .68 of a mile. The Long Pine Greenway runs through the West Creek Pineland Natural Area. It doesn't have a parking lot but you can access the greenway by parking in the lot on the side of the Dunkin Donuts. The Long Pine Greenway has a six foot wide paved path that leads across a very pretty 100 foot pedestrian bridge and on into a gazebo. Other amenities include benches, a bike rack, and informational signs. The preserve is a 7.43 acre tract that is important for migrating birds as well as providing a home for the birds that stay here year round. The vegetation consists of pine flatwoods, saw palmetto, and pineland grasses. Many kinds of birds, fish, and butterflies make their home here. I never fail to see tons of butterflies and birds. I also saw a lot of people out walking and biking this morning. There clearly is a demand for safe places to exercise outside. Across the street is the Helene Klein Preserve and Saw Palmetto Natural Area for more nature fun.

We've all seen those unique types of bicycle racks that are more than just a curved piece of metal…read morefor you to lock your bicycle up to (as long as you bring along your own bike lock/cable). Sometimes though people see what may appear as an artistic piece of outdoor, street art such as a green bicycle (made out of 2" tubular metal) or my favorite being those yellow pineapples (also constructed out of 2" tubular metal). What people should know is typically these are actually art BUT they are also bicycle racks. I too, mistaken those artistic bicycle racks when I was driving along Lyons road and kept seeing one of those bicycle. I must've seen it at least 50 times without a thought but then I noticed out the corner of my eye that adjacent to it was a bicycle path leading away from all roadway traffic. After work that same day, I jumped on my bike to check it out. The trail begins as asphalt pavement and runs west from Lyons Road (at NW 69 Court) along a lovely nature preserve (West Creek Pineland Natural Area) made up mostly of pine trees, palm trees and includes a couple of park benches to have a seat and take in the scenery until the trail meets a waterway with a pedestrian bridge and gazebo with more seating. Looking in the water from the bridge you can find catfish, largemouth bass and tilapia. Continuing to the west the trail becomes a concrete path, still away from all vehicular traffic (residential apartments to the north side of the trail and some warehouse buildings but the trail is fully landscaped (although there is a lack of trees). Eventually the trails appears to end when it meets the back side of a Havarty's Furniture warehouse/retail store (to the south side of the path), but the trail actually continues along the lake to north side and yes, it's less attractive than the trail through the nature preserve but it's still a nice ride. The first time I rode this trail (greenway), it ended at here but since then the City of Coconut has continued the path to turn north thru Caligo Crossing retail plaza to actually end the trail at West Hillsboro Boulevard. And if you are up to it, the City has added a new trail (Greenway) on the other side of West Hillsboro Boulevard. It's vey short... then again, the Long Pine South Greenway trail is only 0.7 miles.

The preserve opened in September and it has been upgraded to five stars. You can now see one of the…read morelast remaining cypress strands in Broward County up close. When you enter the preserve there is an interpretive sign with a map and information about the history of the preserve. From there you walk up a paved path to a boardwalk that takes you over the cypress strand swamp. It is just beautiful to see how this area looked before the surrounding neighborhood was built on top of it. After you cross the boardwalk you can take another paved path to the back of the preserve where there are two picnic tables. Walking around I was surprised out how large the preserve actually was. You can't get a proper scope from outside the fence. Residents of Broward County are so lucky this preserve was saved because it was slated to become an office building in the mid 80's. A bond was passed in 2000 and Broward County purchased the property from the Shooster family. Now you can see a variety of native trees and plants which include oak hammocks, live oaks, and ferns. The preserve is a safe haven to birds, butterflies, frogs, and turtles and vulnerable and threatened fauna including the Eastern Spadefoot Toad, Squirrel Tree Frog, and Florida Box Turtle. This is my favorite new place to enjoy nature. Come out and experience this natural gem.

This is a very small preserve located inside a residential area in Margate. Entrance to the…read morepreserve is on 64th Terrace, on the north-west corner of the preserve. It has a paved walkway that is about 1/3 mile long. There are a few benches and a picnic table along the way, but there is not much shade. Most of the walkway is out in the open. Not a preserve I would recommend considering we have so many other ones in South Florida with much better scenery and facilities.

Brian worked for the city for 25 years and was key in preserving the tree canopy in the city. He passed away in 2015. The city lists this preserve as beginning at the firehouse. I parked there and took the greenway to the boardwalk. You can get closer if you park at the Parkland Town Center. Along the way I saw a pileated wood pecker and a blue jay. Once you arrive, the boardwalk itself is quite short. It just cuts across the preserve and links the two streets. There isn't really anything to see although I had a nice walk. The important thing is the city preserved this natural area for the wild animals of Parkland which is something I can appreciate. Brian D. Archer Wilderness Preserve is part of the 20 acre hammock that makes up the Doris Davis Forman Wilderness where you can get a little bit more of a hike. The city finally added a place to park at Dora Davis Foreman.

Nature Center is great. Perfect trails for all ages. Restrooms and refreshments available. I did the Half mile boardwalk loop trail which is very shaded, so it wasn't feeling too hot. Very tropical. Felt like it was actually misting but no rain. Lots of water under the walkway. It's a Lush forest. Then I did the 1 mile loop prairie trail plus an extra 300 yard loop trail off the prairie trail. Overall a nice forest. Check it out if you haven't been. It's free and plenty of parking was available on a Saturday. They Even had a cleaning station with a water hose and foot scrubber to clean your shoes on the way out.

This park has plenty of parkings, bike and walk trails that leads you into the forest grounds of the park. This park also has a couple of baseball fields and soccer fields as well. They also have two playgrounds; one focused more so on the little ones and the other one is a combination of little ones up to 12 year olds. The grown up one also has a stationary exercise bike for a parent/guardian while the kids are playing. This parks nature is beautiful; you will see ducks, birds, bunnies, turtles, butterflies, and much more! This park is also the main city park, so city and community events happen here, like the annual Butterfly Festival or Movie Nights, etc.
