After 4…read moreyears of Spanish in high school and not absorbing any of it, I was skeptical that I could be taught. My instructor taught us so much, and broke it down into lessons that made the transition so much easier that I'm not only learning Spanish, but I'm enjoying understanding the how's and the why's of the language. All classes are very small (usually no more than 8) which makes it easy to learn, grow, and laugh with each other. I never felt that I couldn't make a mistake or ask a question. The homework is minimal and doesn't usually take more than an hour a week. (Though it's good to make vocab flash cards as you go and keep practicing). Wonderful teachers, quick responces to emails and phone calls.

They are very affordable compared to others, and they have great native speakers for teachers. I have had 3 teachers for different levels, and some others as substitutes. And all their teachers are dynamic and energetic and PATIENT! Especially good for me, because I memorize vocabulary v e r y s l o w l y. The classes are no larger than 8 people so you get really personal attention compared to the universities and colleges. Our class has been studying together for several months and we are now all friends and have attended foreign films together around town and we sometimes bring in snacks for celebrations or special occasions like birthdays etc. I have attended their social celebrations like Day of the Dead and Mexican Independence Day and feel like its a great little community and family at Tierra.

I personally think this place was such a waste of money…read more My daughter was an A student in math and I registered her here so that she could get a jump start and move ahead in math, but what they do is give you an assessment on things that were not taught at the school which they stated were foundational but in my belief were irrelevant. She spent the entire summer completing 10-15 math papers that would take her 2 minutes each and not actually learning anything new. The work was way too easy and when I asked to give her more challenging math or actually teach her something new they kept stating that they believe they have to finish all of the "foundational" math. So I spent a lot of money on silly math papers that I could've printed out myself. Maybe this place is helpful to kids really struggling with math, but my goal was to get ahead and they effectively wasted our time and money and she did not learn one thing to give her a head start for middle school math. I would never come back here and would instead rather hire a private tutor that would actually teach her new concepts.

In spring of 2019, we decided we needed to provide support to my 5th grader who was not confident in his math skills. The site offers a free assessment and called to schedule almost as immediately as I hit send on their online form. Assessment process was explained well and a verbal summary is provided before you walk out the door. Results are compiled and emailed a few days later with an offer for a free tutoring session. So I struggled with figuring out how to finance this endeavor .. definitely worth it but it took me a couple of months to figure out the budget. It's an investment into my child's future and I would have figured it out no matter what. My son officially completed his first month at Mathnasium ... I got an email from his teacher commenting on some changes she is taking notice of. He can explain the reasoning behind his answers. He completes test and homework in less time. He is actually doing better in reading comprehension as well since he has gained confidence in being able to explain what is going on in his mind. We go every day that the site is open ... because we want to get our monies worth but (more importantly) also, because my son asks to go every day! Highly recommend!

She is patient and kind yet structured and knowledgeable. She didn't teach my daughter to memorize flashcards, she is teaching my daughter math strategies that are fun. My daughter now loves doing math and looks forward to meeting with her. This pool gets super crowded in the summer, but so do all of the Portland outdoor pools. As a…read moreswimmer, I prefer doing my hour of laps outside when the weather is nice, so I do my best to tolerate the "cons." The pool is primarily for swimming lessons, and since I consider swimming a life skill, I definitely get the priority. Family swim and open swim is during the afternoons, only til 3:00 during the week, and then 7-8:30 evenings. Lap swimming is early morning, from 6:00-8:00 am, all five lanes. At noon, there are only 3 lanes available from 12:00-1:10. During the evening swim, there are 2 lanes from 5:10-7:25. Weekend swims, all 5 lanes are available from 12:00-1:00 and 4:30-6:00. There are a lot of dedicated swimmers, same people every year. If there are more than 2 people in a lane, you have too circle swim. Often there are 5-6 people circle swimming. Even if every one in the lane is comparable as swimmers, it is challenging! The lanes are marked slow, medium and fast, but speed is relative to who is swimming that day. People come and go so often the lane has people of varying speeds. Lifeguards are there to watch for drownings, they rarely pay attention or discipline the swimmers who get what I call "swim rage" and intimidate the others in their lane. Portland Parks ends the season a week before the end of August. Every year it seems like they close sooner in our already short season. Just 2 years ago, they stayed open until September 15th, which all of us swimmers loved because we had all 5 lanes for lap swimming everyday. The showers and bathrooms are what you would expect. I'd never walk in there barefoot. Ever. There are recliners and seats available. On crowded days, it's hard to get a chair but usually it's not a problem. All that being said, I look forward to the 2.5 months a year the pool is open and I go every day for my swim.

At 1:00 pm, the staff parades every last wet person in the pool out the front door and lines them up to reenter at 1:15. The line includes the wet people who paid already and the dry people who've just arrived. Saturday there were at the very least 50 people in one line, meaning the previously paid people had to wait while the others pay their entry. These previously paid people dont have to pay again and are waived in at the register. There was a ton of staff so they could have had a dedicated line for the paid people and saved us the waiting for paying people. By the time I would have gotten in and settled again, around 1:20 -1:25, I would have had to turn around and leave, so on the front lawn, unshowered, I popped on clothes over my wet suit and hit the road. If you are a lapswimmer, and want to chill apres swim, I suggest you start at 11:15 when they open and do your hanging out before the 1:00 exodus ritual. Someone said it was done in the name of public safety (though I'm still unsure exactly for what reason). To me, especially without a shower, its hardly worth the $5.00 entry fee without the chill time.
