If you're looking for something to do in Clarksville, Customs House is worth a visit. It's the second largest general interest museum in Tennessee, a fact that makes me cry a little inside considering how small it is. Still, they have great permanent and rotating exhibitions. Customs House has a gallery dedicated to Clarksville history. You can learn about the tobacco trade, see the first motorized fire truck, and learn about 19th c. household tools. The ethereal exhibit Dream Forest is running through September 27th. It's an installation by local artist Alan LeQuire, who sculpted the Athena inside the Parthenon. Check it out. 5 dollars for adults, 2 for students, 1 for children.

Play area for the kids in the basement! It's so fun for preschool age children!!

The recently renovated kids area is awesome! There's a play grocery store, bubble room, train exhibit, puppets, art room, and more.

This is a great place for both adults and children. My kids (2) loved the play areas and crafting.

Tirra is an excellent teacher. She moves around the room and shows you things from different angles, so you're not always just looking at her back end and trying to guess what the front end is doing. She also goes through the moves a couple of times and then gives you hand signals to remind you what you're supposed to be doing. This is all extremely helpful and prevented me from looking like a complete idiot the first time I took this class! The music is great. She picks great selections - I especially loved the Indian number. I loved being able to dance like I'm an imaginary Bollywood star! I can't mention the music without commenting on the live drumming! How cool was that? To accompany the music, there's a great drummer on bongos right there in the room. Even though the room has the typical dance studio mirrors and bright lights, Tirra dims them and adds her own mood lighting, so it's much easier to let yourself go and not worry about looking silly in that atmosphere. I've taken Zumba classes before, and this is my absolute favorite. I am definitely going back!

Like Emily said, Global Education Center is a nonprofit store and arts center. They're only open…read moreon weekends, with extra business hours during the holiday season. This enduring (over a decade old!) and unique nonprofit is facing hard times this year with all the state's budget cuts, so I plan on doing as much gift shopping here as possible to try to support their efforts, which include dance classes, teacher workshops, and public and school performances. The Global Education Center gift shop offers decorations, jewelry, instruments, and clothes from Peru, Ecuador, Africa, India... the list goes on. Most of the merchandise is fair trade, and a lot of it is made by the center's instructors and their families, who live all over the world. I really liked the dyed leather bags from India ($8), tapestries, and tin wall hangings. Other items include necklaces made of precious stones, woven bracelets, handmade tote bags, wooden flutes, games, children's books, stone and wooden figurines, and other decorations. I guess you could say Global Education Center has the kind of gifts that keep on giving: By shopping here, you get to feel good about helping out a worthy cause, and whoever receives your gift gets to enjoy a unique, quality item.

Fort Defiance (formerly also known as Fort Sevier & Fort Bruce)…read more We loved the little walking path that was here. It shows some of the original earthworks. Museum was very informative. Clarksville, TN in the 1860's was a vital communication/transportation center for the Confederacy. It was a major producer of tobacco and agricultural goods but became an important source of iron (its local foundries producing cannon, artillery shells and musket balls for the Confederate army early in the war). Clarksville's location at the confluence of the Cumberland and Red Rivers made it a strategic point. The Confederates in preparing for the city's defense constructed Fort Sevier on a hill that commands the two rivers. On February 19, 1862, Union gunboats came up the river from Fort Donelson and reported the fort displayed a white flag and was left deserted. The Union took over the fort and enlarged it so that it would control traffic on the Hopkinsville (Kentucky) Pike. After the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863, Clarksville became a Federal recruitment center for the induction of free blacks and former slaves into the Union service.

We stopped by since we were killing some time in town for a wedding later in the day. The small…read moremuseum was pretty interesting as was the video. If so inclined they have a long walking path down to the river ( beware the path back is uphill). The fort itself is not much to see given it is just earthen walls. Nice views to downtown c-ville. Ok especially if you are a civil war history buff but for all others... meh.
