1st Garage Repair, 18-June-2025 & 2nd Garage Repair-Complaint, 25-June-2025 I have assembled over 20 of these garage doors during the late 70's and early 80's. I am a civilian construction contractor/civil engineer. I also served for 26 years as an Engineer in the Airforce and Navy and retired as a Navy SEABEE-"You think I built some stuff?" 1st Garage Repair Needed 18-June-2025 1. 16 foot Masonite core filled garage door needed to be lifted-1 man could not lift it. 2. Replace lifting cable. 3. Replace pully. 4. Replace pully clamp to cable. 5. Adjust lifting springs. 6. Test door. 1st Garage repair work not completed. 1. Adjusting lifting springs. 2. Re-Aligning door for non-working lock that worked previously before repair. Result of incomplete work. 1. Door could not be lifted without extreme strain-I am 70 years old. 2. Door slammed like a guillotine. 3. Gap on west side of door kept rail lock from locking-lifting door with come along creating unsquared door. 2nd Garage Repair- Complaint 25-June-2025 The same technician came out and was very adversarial and aggressive. Customer informed technician that the lifting springs tension did not match the original by 6 inches and that is lot of spring tension. He adjusted lifting springs by only 1 inch, resulting in increased tension on spring but still needed more to lift door without strain. Technician was extremely angry and aggressive. The customer then asked technician to repair west side lock. The Technician removed and replaced lock so door did lock but door was still unsquared and light could be seen under door. Because tension was not adjusted properly, door is still extremely heavy and drops like a guillotine. Technician started to become belligerent and increasingly aggressive and Customer told him "Its time for you to go." Had the supervisor and/or technician worked for me in the civilian world, they would have been fired. Had the supervisor and/or technician worked for me in the military environment, they would have both been written up and lost stripes. read more

20-year old one-half hp Craftsman opener failed. Custom Door Sales quoted repair and replacement. Two visits by two repair teams without repair part kit. It appears they did not want to repair but to replace. Last month Amazon sold 500-plus of the gear and sprocket replacement kits because they commonly fail. Very poor experience. read more

If you have a Menards Ideal garage door with the EZ Set system and have a broken spring, and you have any mechanical ability, don't call these guys. My quote was $245 including the replacement spring. Suddenly, when they arrived the price jumped to $365. The price increase was because they wouldn't replace the $40 Menards spring but went with a standard spring system requiring the change of the two cable drums ($12), cables ($8) and a bracket ($10) addition. That doesn't account for the $120 price increase and wasn't needed if the spring would have been replaced. The repair guy did nothing else, not lube the track or rollers, not clean up track rust, nothing. As a former owner of rental property, I have changed springs in the past and should have done it this time if I had not been concerned about the track which he didn't do anything with it. Do it yourself and save $300. read more

I had the technician out to tune up door and replace electric eye. Carl had the task completed quickly but noticed that the spring was broken and needed to be replaced. I braced myself for a unfair charge to take advantage of the situation. However, the new spring charge was fair and reasonable. Great company to work with. Carl was professional and efficient. When we first moved up here, I locked our car in the garage. Think about that for a second. Yes. Locked. In the garage. No way in. See, I had managed to close the garage door closer in the car, then manually closed the garage. I called the wife, and she came in her car and opened the garage with her remote. Try explaining that to a person who always has to know WHY. I had a similar episode when I was in a foreign country as a teenager. Completely locked out of my hotel room. Even security couldn't get in. Key wouldn't do it as I had the chain on. It was like I sealed the shit up tight like fort knox and then turned to smoke and slid under the door. So last week when the garage clicker fell off my key chain (damn cheap plastic!) I knew trouble was ahead. And indeed, it was. How many times have I left the clicker upstairs and not remembered it until I was standing before the garage, a handy FUCK on my lips? Too many to count, my friend, too many to count. The answer? Not a new clicker. Oh no. Much better. THE KEYPAD. I always wondered how that would be useful. Here is how it works. You drive up like a badass. Hit the opener that stays in your car. You get out, grab your shit, and manually close the garage with the button on the wall. Then, next day, all badass and shit, you walk up and type in the code, and your garage opens. Like magic. You get in, pull out, and use the clicker again. There, don't you feel that you learned something today? Me too. Now why did I go all the way to New Hope for this service? Our condo association used these guys to get all new doors installed last year. That and I dropped the wife off at work in Golden Valley and a sneeze later you are in new hope at the really industrial offices of Custom Door Sales, Inc. They were very friendly on the phone, and explained that by picking up and installing myself, I was saving myself about $100 bucks. It will be easy she tells me. Then she showed me on a little demo garage door. And believe you me, it is so easy, even my grandmother could do it, and she is dead. Now tell me, could I have made this review any longer? I called yesterday because I needed my garage door replaced. Custom Door installed the current door, and had done repairs on it. I was told a salesman would call me back within 1-2 hrs. After 3-4 hours, I called a second time, again wanting to talk to someone about replacing the door. I was told the salesman would call back very soon. One hour later no call. I called a competitor, who talked to me on the phone, got basic information and would be out today. This morning Custom Doors called, and I talked to a salesman, I explained that I called twice yesterday, and no one responded, and I have someone else coming out today. He hung up on me!. I did call back, explained to the receptionist what just happened. Why would I spend my money with a company when I have difficulty getting someone to talk to me, and then when they do call, they are so rude as to hang up. Recently replaced two openers - both 25 years old and working well (but noisy for this day and age) - with new ones (splurge for the jack shaft ones if you can - you will be amazed). Custom Door Sales did the original install, and also did the new replacements. There's a reason or two they've been in business so long - excellent communication, extremely competitive pricing, and great install jobs (both times). Would recommend highly to anyone! read more

My experience was that of being treated unprofessionally and rudely. I would not recommend working with them.

The torsion spring on our garage door broke on a Saturday. CDS' sticker was on the door so I checked their web page. Unfortunately the number they gave for 24 hour service didn't seem to work, but I tried a couple of other numbers on the site and someone answered. I was able to schedule a repair for the following Monday. They came right away Monday morning and completed the repair in about 30 minutes, plus they lubricated the door and checked the lift mechanism. They charged $185, which is in line with what it should be based on my google research. They offer emergency service, but I didn't ask for this because I was okay with muscling the door for two days to avoid an emergency service charge. Very satisfied. read more

Used them a few times for spring replacement and electric door opener replacement. Seem to do decent work, but not the best prices and not the friendliest bunch, especially when you ask them questions. It's like you're bothering them and they don't want to interact with you. Anyway, last week my double-stall door completely broke of the rail and the wheels were bent and the track was bent. called them and told them I needed a whole new door and they said they'd come out to take a look. I asked if they could get out that day and they said it would be a couple of days. I reiterated that my door was stuck, 2 feet off the ground on one side and about 8 inches on the other side. After a heavy sigh, they said they'd send someone out the next day between certain hours. Well the guy showed up over an hour early, luckily I was home but hadn't originally planned to be at that time. Regardless, I let him in and we went to the garage. He seemed very rushed and wouldn't say much. He looked, made a few mumbled comments and told me he couldn't fix it that I would have to replace it. I told him I already knew that and wanted an estimate for a door to match my 3rd stall, smaller door. He looked at it from 30 feet away and said it's not their door, they didn't install it and they would have to special order it. I said, ok, how much? He huffed and went over to the door to look up the numbers. I told him I wanted to be 100% certain the color and style match. He said he couldn't guarantee the color matching. i asked if they ordered from the manufacturer why they couldn't guarantee color matching. He said because they can't. nice explanation. He then proceeded to walk away and I asked if he was going to provide a quote. He chuckled and said HE couldn't do that and that he would have someone call me later that day with a quote. He then drove over my grass and sped off, obviously in a hurry. In the mean time, I called another company to get an estimate (they were courteous and quickly provided me an estimate right over the phone). So, THREE days later I get a call from Custom Door Sales office saying they have an estimate for me. It was 50% higher than my other estimate. I was shocked that it was that much. I asked why and was told because theirs was better quality. I asked if both places order the exact same door from the exact same manufacturer, how can Custom's be better quality. He seemed upset with that question and asked if I wanted to schedule the door replacement. I said no, I'll pass. Looks like I'll be using the other company for spring replacements and service going forward. read more
