Unlike many CrossFit gyms, Validus doesn't have that competitive vibe. It's welcoming for people at any fitness level, with members of all ages and abilities. It's a very supportive atmosphere and really feels like a big family. One great thing about CrossFit workouts is that they can be scaled to the level of the individual. Even though I've been going for years, there are still movements I can't do. But that doesn't matter because I can just substitute whatever the weight or movement might be for something I can manage. Another thing I love about CrossFit is that you're always doing something different, so you don't have to worry about getting bored with the workouts. Lastly, but certainly not least, I really appreciate the social element of going to the gym. I work from home, so I don't have a lot of social interaction throughout the day. Going to Validus gives me a regular social outlet where I can laugh and have fun with like-minded, good people. If you're looking for a fun way to get in shape or if you're curious about what CrossFit is all about, I highly recommend you stop by Validus and see what you think. I'm pretty sure they offer free introductory classes to try it out. Ask for Andrew--he's the owner and a super cool guy. P.S. When I started Fit Body 2XR with Steve, I expected a fast turn-around. I thought: I used to be an…read moreaerobics instructor in my 20's, so I can totally breeze through these workouts. Well, 15 years later, 2 kids, lots of ice-cream, and hitting my 40's created a body that didn't respond the way I expected. I had reached a size 14, and weighed well over 160 pounds. Considering I am 5' 4 and 3/4 inches, the fat was definitely not avoidable and it wasn't hard to see. I felt tired all the time, had mood swings, and hated clothes shopping. I didn't feel healthy and I didn't feel attractive. We all want to feel attractive right? I will be honest with you: Steve's classes are hard. They involve a lot of mental stamina, dedication to not give up, visualizing your goals in order to keep the motivation going, pressing through the feeling of wanting to vomit sometimes. But, he also understands that his participants are all coming to his classes at different levels, with different histories and he is able to cater to those needs. I realize now, that Steve had a sense of the type of person I was from the start: that I demand from myself, and so he worked mentally to push me. He would get close to me when I felt I couldn't finish bear crawl suicides, and say something like "you are a leader, so lead!". When he said that, he tapped into my core, got me going, gave me the will and heart to finish that workout with my best for that day. Steve's workouts change every day and I never get tired of them. I can tell you: you are not going to get a typical fitness club workout with Steve. He is going to push you, and probably push you past the limits you want. But, believe me, you will be grateful in the end, and the results prove it, if you are willing to keep at it. Exercise is not a quick fix. I realize that this is now my new lifestyle. I can't rely on my 20's metabolism, I can't eat pizza after a late night booze binge, and I can't go to birthday parties and eat the cake. I started working out with Steve once a week. I thought that this would be a good place to start getting back in shape. After a couple months of that, I realized that this was not going to be enough, I had to commit. And, believe me, committing is the first thing one needs to do to reach some semblance of success. So, I upped my workouts to 2-3 times of week. Then I started noticing some results. That's when just being able to get through a workout, do 20 jumping jacks, to be able to get up the stairs without huffing and puffing, turned into some bigger goals. I started losing dress sizes. Although my weight was going down slowly, I was gaining muscle and starting to get a body shape back that I recognized. I got excited. These workouts, these tough muscle aching, cardio thumping workouts that Steve pushed me through with the other participants were really paying off. My body started wanting more, and I again increased my exercise to 4 times per week. I felt great. I felt strong. I started to set goals for myself again...lose 5 pounds, get into a size 12, lose another 5 pounds, get into a size 10...and I had to continue to readdress my goals. Steve measured my progress with weigh-ins and fat percentage measurements (I hate those, but they keep you real). I had reached my goal! It was time to decide: is this good enough for me, or do I want more from myself? I admit: I am a competitive person, with myself. I am a perfectionist, I tend to be hard on myself, and I expect big things from myself. Boot camp has fed into those aspects of me. Every workout challenges my inner stamina. Sometimes I have given in, and have stopped to catch a sip of water, stopped half way through an exercise because my legs were burning, got only 8 push-ups in a row instead of 15 or 20. But you know what? I am still trying, still pushing myself, and it all averages out to an amazing result. Look, we have good days and not so good days. Some days I am not motivated to go to Steve's class, but I get my workout clothes on, ignore the mental garbage that tries to convince me not to go, and get into the car and get to the gym. Once I get there, I am glad I went. That's what has gotten me the results: Steve's creative, hard core, muscle building, cardio building, creative routines - those classes combined with the mental ability to turn the voice inside my head to the "off position" when it tries to convince me that the classes are too hard, or I am too tired, or I deserve a break. My advice: that voice is not telling you the truth, so ignore that voice if you want to see results. It's hard work, and there is no way around it. There is a trainer (I think his name is M.J) who is overly flirtatious with female members and in my opinion crosses the line for what is appropriate behaviour. In a fitness studio, it is important to create a safe and trusting environment where members do not have to worry about unsolicited comments that can be perceived as a sexual nature. People want to feel confortable when they're working out - they are in a vulnerable position where they worry about their body, how they look, and will often compare themselves to others. This is not the environment to be taking advantage of people's insecurities for their own personal gain. I sincerely hope that a better job can be done by the management in training employees on how to create and keep a safe space for its members.

Class and Atmosphere: The intensity is quite good with…read more500-600 calories burned on average. The class is usually divided into 60 mins: 20 mins treadmill, 20 mins weights, 20 mins rowing. The one instructor is shared amongst all areas of the class. The instructor will call out instructors for all 3 sections. There is TV screens to provide video examples of how to perform the weight-based exercises. I found that the sharing of the instructor was a bit less interactive, than other studios like F45 where you get more attention from the instructor and do not have to rely on a TV screen or peers as much. I also found the cost of the class to be a bit high considering you are more self directed on the treadmill and the rowing machines, so 2/3 of the class cost is really to do things without alot of attention or instruction. Instructor: The instructors all have decent energy, but I found that it did not push you as hard as other locations I have been to. There is one personal trainers during the class that go around and motivate you, correct your form, ensure you are pushing yourself while being safe and enjoying the class. Fitness Level: I found the instructors here tended to prioritize safety over wanting to have the highest possible intensity. I had my treadmill turned down for speed because I was going "too fast". That is something to note, that the demographic is a bit on the older age group (late 30s-50s) and if you are a young adult you may not feel motivated by your peers. I would say there are certain injuries that would be hard to do in this class. If you have a leg or back injury this would be difficult with lots of burpees, jumping, running, cycling, rowing. Those are common exercises that would be difficult to modify. Amenities: There is a water bottle station. There are areas to place your belongings but they are not locked. The stations are well cleaned, and instructors provide cleansing wipes for the equipment as you switch to different parts of the class.

I joined in August 2012 not knowing a thing about CrossFit. Its January 2013 and I am down 25lbs, my waist went from a 40 to a 33, and I need to have all my suits tailored to fit me...and I feel fit, alive and healthy for the first time in a long while. The Box is well equipped and the coaches understand and enforce CrossFit principles. Lots of friendly people and generally a great vibe. Very welcoming and while CrossFit to the uninitiated is intimidating, I feel this Box is a place that could help you move past. They've grown in size over the last few years and expanded their facility. If you are obese (I mean that in literal BMI terms) ask Cam or Kevin to work with you through an onboarding program. You dont want to get injured and some of the stuff can be taxing, so onboarding may be right for you. No showers or change rooms. Mens and ladies washroom, so you can change there. Lockers for longtime members...I believe there is a waiting list. Limited parking near door on busy days, but the lot is sizable so really not an issue.

I have followed them from their first location at Yonge/Sheppard, and then to Bayview/401. I'm so glad their studio is now at Gordon Baker Road, as the traffic is less hectic and parking is a breeze. Garick is a Certified Personal Trainer (Can-Fit-Pro) who has designed corporate wellness programs, and has a strong focus on fitness and injury rehabilitation. There are no memberships or contracts, and you only pay for the services you use. He's also super sweet and always has a bright smile. Such a pleasure to see him! Osteopathy is a drug-free, non-invasive manual therapy that aims to improve health across all body systems by manipulating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework. I consider it a complimentary therapy when needed. Cathy's treatments are very hands on, and take place in a calm, holistic and nurturing environment. She is extremely intuitive, and can give a very quick analysis each time I see her. I always leave feeling very ZEN, not just emotionally but physically. There is complimentary parking for 2 hours (see my tip) and a free shuttle to Don Mills station which runs every 30 minutes.
