Here's my rundown: 1) My stylist Yvette, did not bother wetting down my hair before cutting 2) She suggested a short bob and I said no, but then she went and cut the back short anyway 3) She didn't offer a mirror afterwards, but she was anxious to give me her own business cards, which is a construction business in Jersey City, NJ; and 4) After all this, she said "Cash Only" and told me to go outside to the ATM. I think I have to disabuse myself of this notion that business people want personal relationships. I should have stopped her immediately and just walked out. I could have walked out anytime while she was abusing my hair. I could have left without visiting the ATM outside. But instead I paid her the $30 she wanted, plus I gave her a $5 tip. This is because I think I am a good person and a liberal Democrat, but if I look at myself from the outside, I just look like some bleeding heart patsy. I'm not going to go to a hair salon for a long time, and I'm going to have to rethink my opinion of how to promote a social justice policy without subjecting myself to ridicule.

If you need a good haircut, style, color, or extensions, I wouldn't recommend anyone else.

I love Lisa and Sealene! I got my hair styled in Sept 2015 in Havana Twists. I made an…read moreappointment for a consultation and met with Sealene who answered all of my questions about pricing, the difference between havana twists vs marley twists, price, length, and color options. She also informed me that the hair is included in the price which is great for me because I don't know the first thing about buying hair. They also offer a six week touchup for the twists. Two days later, I had my appointment at 10 am with Sealene. Sealene was already at the salon and prepping for me which I liked because I hate a late stylist unless they're late for a good reason. Sealene came out and greeted me and asked about my color choices and convinced me as a twists newbie to go with a solid color first to get used to the look before going so bold. I'm glad she told me that because sometimes I tend to dive in head first and I'm really glad I didn't go for a bolder color right off the bat. The color that she used is a bit darker than my natural hair so in a sense I got to experiment with a new color anyway and I love it. Sealene was very easy to talk to and very gentle with my hair. I tried to detangle as much as possible before arriving but Sealene had to blow dry my hair a bit to make it easier to detangle at the roots. As a natural, I'm always concerned with heat but Sealene and Lisa work with natural hair so I trusted her and Sealene used a nice warm heat and not a blaring hot heat so there was no worry of heat damage. I have a head full of hair and Sealene was done in under 3 hours. Lisa came into the salon during my last 45 minutes and I loved her personality just as much as Sealene's. I can see why they make a great team. During the last few minutes, Lisa and Sealene both worked on my hair. I invited my sister to come along to document the process and she was able to get a quick but thorough consultation from Lisa about her waist length locs. My sister and I really enjoyed Lisa and Sealene and now my sister has an appointment scheduled too! The salon is really nice. It's shared with other stylists and everyone in the salon has a really cool vibe. To make an appointment, you have to book online. I think Sealene's name should also be added to the stylists list because in other reviews, people commented that they thought they were going to see Lisa and was surprised when Sealene did their hair. When Sealene turned me around in the closest mirror, I instantly loved my look! And that's saying something since 98.999% of the time, I shy away from any styles that don't use my real hair since it looks unnatural to me. But Sealene used the invisible root method and the ends of the twists are slightly wavy so they look really natural on me. They gave me a maintenance card to let me know how I should maintain my twists at home. Lisa said that I'd get plenty of compliments and I must tell her, "Lisa, you are so right! I've gotten so many compliments and told people where I got them done!" Thanks to Sealene and Lisa, I have a nice protective style that will last for weeks during the hot and drought-stricken California season I'm in and my hair can get a break from the 25 to 38 grains per gallon very hard water I have in Santa Barbara.

I didn't think much could be done so had nearly resigned myself to a bad hair year. A friend suggested extensions and I went to see Catherine after reading great reviews about her work on Yelp. From the start, she was so warm and encouraging. She found hair that perfectly matched mine in color, density, thickness (blond, thin and fine) and created a beautiful halo that looked natural. I feel like me again! I was a little worried that I'd be able to pull it off (I am relatively low maintenance) but Catherine worked with my patiently to answer all my questions and to make sure I was happy with the way it looked. All hail the Hair Extension Queen of NYC!…read more I had been wanting extensions again for a while. It had been ten years since I had them last and I was a little bit traumatized by the experience of getting them out, as it had left my hair horribly broken and damaged. That said, they were done with synthetic hair. Real hair makes all the difference with the extent of damage to your own hair. Catherine only uses high quality hair and is an expert with weft extensions (in the past, I had pinch braid style). She works out of Uliana Hair Studio these days, a lovely salon in the East Village (I reviewed it separately). You go in for a consultation and discuss options, which include tape, sew-in or halo (non permanent). I went for sew-in as I wanted something semi permanent. My wedding was several months away and I wanted to get used to this hair thing before then. If you choose this method, you need to go in and get it maintained every 4-6 weeks to keep it looking good. The hair is so seamlessly blended with your own that you will forget that you don't actually have that perfect, thick long hair! It's so natural that you'll get more of the, "wow, your hair has grown so long" types of compliments. When I'd tell people that they were extensions, they couldn't believe it. Man, I wish my hair was this thick and healthy! I've had thin, lousy hair since I was like 11. Years of dying, flat ironing and blow drying hasn't done it any favors either. Prices are extremely fair in comparison to other salons, not only in NYC but across the country. Yes, this is an investment, but you pay for quality. It was worth it. I decided after my wedding that the sew-ins and the necessary maintenance weren't for me anymore. Catherine made my 2 wefts into a halo that I wear occasionally (OK, rarely. I've been digging the easiness of my shoulder length hair, especially in winter when long hair keeps getting caught in coats and scarves). Note that my hair was not really damaged at all after having the extensions in for 7 months. Incredible. Catherine is awesome. I appreciated that she was willing to work with me and what I needed as far as the length and thickness of the extensions (initially they were a bit too "much" for me, so she shaped them up and thinned them out a bit). I enjoyed talking to her and getting to know her on each of my visits. Oh and she is also great when it comes to dying your hair!
